Dukas The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Mahler Das Lied von der Erde
Arranged for chamber ensemble by Peter Stangel
Pocket philharmonic edition
Classical and Romantic orchestral works arranged for small ensemble
The aim of the arrangements is to reproduce the sound of the large orchestra as
faithfully as possible. The repertoire ranges from Haydn to Beethoven, Schumann and
Brahms to Ravel and Mahler.
At this highly unusual time, with the orchestral performance world still greatly
compromised by restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, this catalogue offers
a new way to reimagine the world‘s most loved orchestral pieces.
These arrangements, transparent and lively, and carefully attuned to the composer‘s
original conception, are in themselves an exciting new way to discover these great
works.
The catalogue also features ensemble versions of chamber music works, including
Schubert‘s Piano Sonata in A minor, in arrangements for ten musicians, as well as
Bruckner’s String Quintet, which becomes a veritable chamber symphony for 12 players.

Peter Stangel
Peter Stangel was born in 1964 in former Czechoslovakia into a German-Czech-Hungarian-Slovak-
Jewish-Catholic family. In 1968 the family moved to West Germany, where Stangel grew up mostly
in Hanover.
At his own request, he received violin and piano lessons and made his first attempts at
composition. After graduating from high school, he studied Music and Musicology (with a side-
interest in physics and mathematics) and at the same time trained in Communications.
From 1990 onwards, Stangel followed the classic German Kapellmeister path: as a repetitor, study
director and first conductor at various European opera houses (Bielefeld, St. Gallen, Innsbruck,
Heidelberg), he developed a repertoire of almost 70 operas and around 250 symphonic works. In
1997 he went to the Amsterdam, where he served as as Assistant Conductor at the Dutch National
Opera and co-supervised the revival of the entire Ring of the Nibelung.
In 1999 Peter Stangel was appointed General Music Director of the ‘Loh Orchestra’ (Max Bruch
Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1639) in Thuringia and First Guest Conductor of the Ljubljana
State Opera (Slovenia).
Since 2004 Peter Stangel has lived and worked in Munich, focussing primarily on compositional
work as well as on the development and artistic direction of the taschenphilharmonie. This unusual
ensemble now runs three separate concert series in Munich alone and is known for its innovative
presentation. It has recorded and released 40 CDs, many of which have garnered national and
international awards.
