INTRODUCTION

Vegetarianism offers to mankind the truly ethical way of living. It leads to agreater
sense of health and vigour, and makes a vital contribution towards the solution of the
world food problems. Vegetarianism today is becoming more widespread. Many
people deciding to make the move away from cruelty, are beginning to question the
necessity and wisdom of eating meat; many realize that in order to supply the world’s
needs more energies will have to be devoted to the growing of food for direct human
consumption rather than to the breeding of animals for food. Many are concerned with
the overall responsibility of man to his environment and feel vegetarianism is part
ofthis concern.

GOOD HEALTH

Modern scientific research now shows conclusively that it is not necessary to eat meat
in order to be halthy. All the nutrients essential for life can be obtained from the plant
kingdom. A more active life, with better health and a greater sense of well-being is
the likely result of the change to a flesh-free diet. Moreover toxic factors in animals
produce have always presented a human health hazard. The consumption of animal
fats have been implicated in the growing incidence of heart disease and flesh meat is
almost entirely responsible for outbreaks of food poisoning.

Nowadays the modern trend towards intensive and victory farming methods provided
further cause and concern. Chemical drugs added to animal feeds are likely traces in
the food produced which may harmful long-term effects on human beings. An
uncontaminated natural meatless diet means greater vitality of mind and body., and
should be remembered that fresh air, sunshine and exercise all have an important part
too in playing a good health.

VEGETARIAN DIET

A vegetarian does consume flesh, fish, or fowl. It is important to appreciate that it is

not only a matter of cutting out meat but having a balanced vegetarian diet consisting
of food as natural, as unspoilt, as untampered with as possible.
The idea of meat being necessary as provider of protein is known to be mistaken,
vegetarian diets such as soya, nuts, milk, whole grains and cheese are more
concentrated sources. This is also been agreed by nutitionists that an adequate supply
of protein can be obtained from vegetarian diet.
