Lesson
Use opinion-marking
1 signals to share ideas
As you continue this lesson, your goal in this section is to use opinion-marking
signals to share ideas.

What’s New

What is poverty? What kind of problems do poor people have?

Do you believe that the rich are growing richer, and the poor are growing poorer? Will
there always be poverty in the world?
Activity 1: Read My Opinion
Read the paragraph below and answer the questions that follow.

Poverty is probably a multifaceted issue and a perennial problem. To understand it

better, let us consider many factors contributory to this economic state. I think
inequality is a reason why many people are suffering from poverty. Furthermore, I
believe that corruption and illiteracy are two of the main reasons why most nations,
regardless of the economy, are afflicted by it. I reckon that many people suffer from
poverty not because they lack wealth but because their leaders who are supposed to
uplift them take advantage of their weaknesses. I am also convinced that lack or
scarcity of material possessions is brought about by economic, political, and social
elements.

Could we possibly revert it in favor of the poor? Or shall we endure its enigma in our
lifetime?

1. Why is poverty considered as a multifaceted and perennial problem?

2. Do you believe that inequality is the reason why many people suffer from
poverty?
3. Explain in your own opinion the saying, “Poverty is not a hindrance to
succeed”.
What is It

Notice the italicized words/phrases in the paragraph about poverty. What is their
function in conveying meaning? Do they express factual information or merely state
opinions?

Let us consider these sentences from the paragraph.

1. Poverty is probably a multifaceted issue and a perennial problem.

2. To understand it better, let us consider many factors contributory to this
economic state.
3. I think inequality is a reason why many people are suffering from poverty.
4. Furthermore, I believe that corruption and illiteracy are two of the main
reasons why most nations, regardless of economy, are afflicted by it.
5. I reckon that many people suffer from poverty not because they lack wealth
but because their leaders who are supposed to uplift them take advantage of
their weaknesses.
6. I am also convinced that lack or scarcity of material possessions is brought
about by economic, political, and social elements.
These sentences state the personal belief, consideration, thought, or reflections.
Thus, they express their opinions. The italicized words/phrases, probably, let us
consider, I think, I believe, I reckon, and I am also convinced signal that they are not
expressing verifiable statements.

However, if we state them as facts, the statements will become.

1. Poverty is a multifaceted issue and a perennial problem.
2. Many factors are contributory to this economic state.
3. Inequality is a reason why many people are suffering from poverty.
4. Corruption and illiteracy are two of the main reasons why most nations,
regardless of economy, are afflicted by it.
5. Many people suffer from poverty not because they lack wealth but because
their leaders who are supposed to uplift them take advantage of their
weaknesses.
6. The lack or scarcity of material possessions is brought about by economic,
political, and social elements.

The ideas in the preceding sentences can be verified as true or not, but the
reconstruction of the first sentences (without the italicized words/phrases) changes
the meaning being conveyed. Without these words, they seem to state factuality or
certainties.
However, we cannot be factual all the time, and that’s where opinion comes in.
Giving an opinion is necessary, especially in instances that we are not certain about
actualities and when we merely intend to express views, belief, conviction, or
reflection.

There are expressions that signal opinions. Just like grammatical markers, they link
ideas in a sentence or paragraph in a logical manner. When used properly, the ideas
will flow smoothly, and they will guide the readers to identify facts and opinions.
These words, however, do not only express an opinion but also encourage clarity and
cohesion. The introductory paragraph used some of the opinion marking signals.

Here are examples of expressions that signal opinion.
