Whereas September 11th is now etched into popular culture as a defining moment of
videos
history, JFK’s assassination is probably regarded as one of the 20th century’s most
infamous events – especially to those who were around at the time. Being the youngster
that I am, I wasn’t around then, so it’s not something I can relate to on a personal
level.
Computer games have always used historical events as their backdrop: just look at how
many World War 2 themed games there are. That said, computer games generally skirt
around “taboo” subjects, even if they have been visited time and time again in literature
and cinema. After all, games are interactive right? So no game company wants to be
branded a provocateur, after all, we’ve got to think of the children!

Therefore it caused quite a stir, when on November 22, 2004; Scotland based Traffic
Games released “JFK Reloaded” – 3D, first-person perspective, “assassination
simulator”. The premise is simple enough: you (the player) are Lee Harvey Oswald, you
are in the infamous book repository and you have a gun, and we all know what happens
next.
Or do we? According to Traffic Games, the whole point of JFK Reloaded was to help
5. prove that there was indeed no big conspiracy, just one nut-job with a gun that got
lucky. To this effect, it stays true to the actual event as accurately as a computer game
- albeit made without a big budget - can. The player is in a fixed position, you can’t
move, and your rifle takes the standard time to reload. Accordingly, the much lauded
physics engine was meant to be simulating real bullet trajectories and velocities as
realistically as possible.
So, despite the big controversy that the game caused, what was it actually like? In
reality it’s actually the gaming equivalent of a hit of crack cocaine – minus the long term
addiction. Sure, there’s an initial thrill of doing something that mainstream society
considers perverse and immoral, but the actual goal of the game: to accurately
reproduce Lee Harvey Oswald’s exact actions, is actually mind numbingly boring. You
see to get the best “score”, you have to try and reproduce the exact number and timing
of the shots Oswald fired. This is no easy task, and it means you must do things like
miss a shot and shoot the road as well - after all, that’s what Oswald did. Once you
realise just how difficult – and boring – such a task is, you do what any gamer would
do, and that is just randomly shoot everything and anyone. This is the games only
saving grace – the ability to explore historical “what ifs”. After all, unlike most games
where you create history, in this one you are just replaying it. So the natural tendency
is to try other scenarios, to make your own “version” of actual events. But with such
limited game play, this path quickly wears thin too, and within a matter of an hour, the
game has lost any illusion of fun.

JFK reloaded caused a huge controversy in the US when released, and not surprisingly,
Traffic Games quickly folded and disappeared under the weight of criticism from
politicians and social commentators. The game is now considered abandonware – that is
no one actually owns the rights to it. Almost 2 years later, the game has slipped from
popular memory. So, Cool.com.au presents the free – abandonware – version of the
game for you to download. The game requires a Windows computer – but given its age,
it should run fine on most computers these days.
If you download and play it – ask yourself, is this game a valid historical simulator? Or
is it deliberately a “shocker”, designed to garner publicity and outrage? Either way,
Traffic Games is no more, so you’ll not be supporting their ill-gotten gains. When you’re
done – and you will be pretty quickly – believe me, shoot us some feedback on what
you think JFK: Reloaded is really like.
Warning: This game contains semi-realistic violence. If you are young, please consult
your parents before downloading. If you are just plain squeamish, avoid it and go look
at some pretty flowers.

WASHINGTON -- A
controversial new
video game that
has drawn harsh
criticism from both
7. politicians and the
general public
asks players to
test their theories
about the 1963
assassination of
President John F.
Kennedy.
Traffic
Management
Limited, a Scottish
video game
company, released
JFK Reloaded
earlier this week.
The game re-
creates the
assassination of
JFK, and lets
players take the
role of assassin
Lee Harvey
Oswald. The game
depicts the
presidential limo
as it cruises
through Dealey
Plaza in Dallas,
and allows the
player to fire at
the president from
Oswald's perch in
the school book
depository
building. After
shooting at
Kennedy, the
player sees a slow
motion replay and
an analysis of
where--and who--
the bullets hit.
Senator Edward
Kennedy (D-
Massachusetts),
brother of the late
president, has
condemned the
game. His
spokesperson calls
it "despicable."
Senator Joseph
Lieberman (D-
Connecticut) has
spoken out
against it, too.
Lieberman "was
sickened by the
game," says his
spokesperson
Casey Aden-
Wansbury.
Kirk Ewing, the
managing director
of Traffic, says the
purpose of the
game is to provide
a realistic
environment for
users to test the
lone gunman
theory. The gamer
who can most
accurately
replicate Oswald's
shooting on
November 22,
1963, can win up
to $100,000,
according to the
Web site.
"We genuinely
believe that if we
get enough people
participating we'll
be able to
disprove once and
for all any notion
that someone else
was involved in
the assassination
of President
Kennedy," Ewing
says in a press
release.
But Christy
Glaubke of
Children NOW, an
organization that
promotes safer
media for children,
dismisses the
claimed
educational merits
of JFK Reloaded.
"I would think the
only [lesson it
teaches] is how to
be an assassin,"
Glaubke says.
She also worries
that, despite the
registration policy
that restricts JFK
Reloaded to
people over 18,
kids will find a
way to play
Oswald on their
computers.
"I would think any
kid [who] has
access to a debit
card or prepaid
credit card would
have access to
this," she says.

Causing
Real
Controversy
The release of JFK
Reloaded, which
coincides with the
41st anniversary
of the
assassination,
follows the recent
appearance of Riot
UMass, another
contentious reality
game.
Riot UMass,
created by
freshman Grant
Cerulo, depicted
University of
Massachusetts
students beating
police officers, re-
creating the riots
that occurred in
Amherst after the
Boston Red Sox
won the World
Series last month.
That game site
has been taken off
the Internet.
Jason Della Rocca,
program director
for the
International
Game Developers
Association, says
that these two
releases don't
signify a trend.
"This is not
necessarily
representative of
the mainstream
gaming industry,"
Della Rocca says.
At the same time,
however, he
defends quasi-
reality games such
as 9-11 Survivor,
a game that
challenges players
to escape from the
World Trade
Center in New
York before the
building collapses,
as helping the
public "better
understand a topic
or issue."
Similarly, Ian
Bogost, a game
designer at
Persuasive Games,
considers JFK
Reloaded "an
attempt to frame
a news event."
But not everyone
appreciates these
games' use of
emotionally
charged historical
events to generate
sales.
"I think it's awful
that they're
turning something
as tragic as that
into a game, for
children
especially," says
Rebecca Sizelove,
a graduate
student of political
management at
George
Washington
University.

JFK: Reloaded is a controversial edutainment first-person shooter video game recreating
the John F. Kennedy assassination. The game was released November 21, 2004 (the day
before the 41st anniversary of the event) by Scotland-based Traffic Games, JFK: Reloaded
puts the player in the role of Kennedy's alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The player is
then scored on how closely one's version of the assassination matches the report of the
Warren Commission. According to the company, the primary aim of the game was "to
establish the most likely facts of what happened on 1963-11-22 by running the world’s first
mass-participation forensic construction", the theory being that a player could help prove
that Lee Harvey Oswald had the "means and the opportunity to commit the crime", and thus
help support or disprove the Warren Commission's findings.
The main problem facing a player wanting to recreate the assassination accurately was that,
since each bullet reacted "realistically" (including a certain amount of random probability), it
was impossible to predict precisely where the bullet would go once it had hit its target.
This meant that there was a large element of luck involved in getting the perfect score,
especially with regards to the "magic bullet".

Game or simulation?
Many people have argued that JFK Reloaded is not a game as such, but rather a historical
simulation based on a controversial event. Traffic Games claimed one of the reasons they
made the 'game' was to try to increase social awareness and inspire an interest in history in
a young audience.
Critics maintain that it is tasteless, and that if Traffic Games truly wanted to show how the
assassination was attempted, they could have easily just released a 3D rendition of the
event, allowing people to see for themselves what had happened, or indeed, at the very
least, included one in the game itself.

Critical reaction
A majority of gaming websites and publications have not reviewed JFK: Reloaded; however,
some have, and the game has received both negative and positive reviews. Some people
argue that JFK: Reloaded should be considered a complex simulation rather than a video
game because the point of the game is to question historical controversies, while others
have argued that this could have easily been achieved without making money and/or a
game from it, and as such it is in extremely bad taste.
A spokesperson for Senator Edward Kennedy, the late President Kennedy's brother, called
the game "...despicable. Why would someone make this game? This should have never
been allowed on the market."

Competition winner
On February 22, 2005, a user living in France named "Major_Koenig" won the competition
prize of $10,712 with a score of 782 out of 1000. The player's user name was based on
Erwin König, a famous sniper. His real name is Stephane Krupa.
Second and third place went to the users "Flux" (779), and "ArrogantB" (777), respectively.
No prizes were awarded for anything other than first place.
After the competition had officially closed, the cost of the simulation was reduced to $4.99
and the "competition run" option was disabled within the game.
Sometime in early August 2005, the official website closed, but not before offering version
1.1 to the public for free. Version 3.0 was in the making when they closed the website. In
version 3.0, the player can play the "controversial side"; that of a shooter on the Grassy
Knoll.

Outcome
Despite claims from Traffic Games that JFK: Reloaded was designed to help prove or
disprove the Warren Commission's findings, no results from their 'experiment' have been
published.
The scoring system used in JFK: Reloaded suggests that the deadly shots, which killed
Kennedy and wounded others, most likely originated from the Book Depository Building.
However the accuracy of the simulation's 3D models and physics have not been
independently verified.

Community
There is a small community for this game who are creating mods. One of the mods places a
crowd observing the motorcade into the game, while another has several options, such as
disabling reloading, disabling the bullet-drop effect, and allowing you to shoot from either
[1]
the Grassy Knoll or the Dal-Tex building. (This website is not a community for JFK
Reloaded, only the thread. The website is made for a game called Garry's Mod.)

What Is JFK Reloaded?

Unless you've been living under a rock since November of 2004, JFK Reloaded
is a ballistics trajectory, impact and results simulator that attempts to recreate
the most important aspects of the assassination of US President John F.
Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963. It is designed to give some semblance of a
recreation of the last few moments of the President's life, and challenges
players to help disprove any conspiracy theory by recreating the three shots
fired by Lee Harvey Oswald from the Sixth Floor of the Texas Schoolbook
Depository in Dallas, Texas. Using data collected by the Warren
Commission in 1964, the program places the player in the role of Oswald, and
allows them to examine the challenges that he faced in committing his actions.
By allowing the player to either duplicate or alter Oswald's actions, the
program's designers believe that JFK Reloaded can help players determine if
Oswald, in fact, was the "Lone Nutter", acting solely on his own. This is
accomplished by the player's attempts to duplicate Oswald's shots by matching
their own shots to the ballistic models determined by the Warren Commission.
especially the model that best fits the trajectory and impact results of so-called
"Magic Bullet", exhibit CE399, the keystone to the Commission's controversial
"Single Bullet Theory".
All of the above aside, JFK Reloaded - or, as it's affectionately known, JFKR -
is essentially a first-person shooter game much in the same vein as Doom,
Half-Life, Quake or Unreal Tournament. What arguably differentiates JFKR
from being a game along the lines of the three examples listed is that it's more
of an interactive simulation, highly derivative from the research into the events
at Dealey Plaza as performed by PBS on it's Nova program in 1991, or by Dale
Myers in 1993, both of which featured the first use of Computer Graphics (CGI)
to recreate said events. However, as with a first-person shooter, events can
reach different conclusions based on player actions. In the case of JFKR,
Oswald's actions can be altered on-the-fly in ways that totally diverge from
known history.
The sim, as one might expect, caused quite a bit of controversy, and not just
because of the subject matter. In addition, not only were the program's
designers initially charging $9.99 USD for the game, Traffic also held a
competition in which players owning legitimate copies could compete to see
who could manage to duplicate Oswald's shots as determined by the Warren
Commission, with up to $100,000 in cash awarded to the most accurate
contestant. The competition closed at 12:00am CST on February 21st, 2005.
The following day, February 22nd, a user named "Major_Koenig"(*) was
declared the winner, and was awarded an unspecified cash prize reportedly of at
least $10,000. No other prizes were awarded to for anything other than first
place.

(*) If "Major_Koenig" is reading this. please contact us ASAP.

We'd like to talk with you about your experience.

After the competition had officially closed, the cost of the simulation was
reduced to $4.99 USD, and a revised version of the program with the
"competition run" option disabled was released in March. In early July, Traffic
closed their online store and began offering version 1.1 to the public for free.
One month later, in August 2005, Traffic effectively shut down the official
website. No official reasons have ever been given for the site's shutdown, nor
have any promises by Traffic to reveal all statistical data gathered from the
competition to demonstrate how JFK Reloaded was designed to help prove or
disprove the Warren Commission's findings been posted on their site. No such
release of any findings made by Traffic are expected in the near future, if ever.

Ok, I've Lived Under A Rock Since 1963.

What Happened On November 22nd?

Here's the nutshell version of the events that took place:

The date and time: November 22nd 1963, ~12:30pm CST. the 35th President
of the United States, John F. Kennedy has arrived in Dallas, Texas, as part of
a political tour to support the Democratic Party in the South, where support for
the President and the Party has been wavering due to issues surrounding the
President's views on Civil Rights and perceived inactions against both Soviet
Communism and the dictatorship of Fidel Castro in Cuba. After arriving at Love
Field, the Presidential Motorcade - carrying President Kennedy, his wife Jackie,
Texas Governor John Connally, his wife, Nellie, and two Secret Service
agents - proceeded to the Dallas Trade Mart, where the President was
scheduled to speak before a fundraiser luncheon. The motorcade traveled
through the crowds lining the streets of downtown Dallas, a route that goes
from Main Street onto Houston Street, and then left onto Elm Street. From
there the motorcade will enter Dealey Plaza, and then under an overpass
which will lead onto the Stemmons Freeway for the final part of the journey to
the Trade Mart.
At ~12:30, ± one minute, three shots were fired by an assassin using a
Mannlicher-Carcano rifle from a storage-room window on the Sixth Floor of
the Texas Schoolbook Depository building, located at the corner of Elm and
Houston. According to the U.S. Commission to Report upon the Assassination of
President John F. Kennedy - better known as the Warren Commission - the
first shot missed entirely, the second shot hit both the President and Governor
Connally, wounding both, while the third shot fatally struck the President in the
back of the head. The President, despite heroic efforts by the staff at Parkland
Hospital, was for all practical purposes DOA the second the third bullet hit. The
assassin initially escaped the Texas Schoolbook Depository during the confusion
following the shootings, but was later apprehended less than an hour and a half
after the President was shot, at a theater not ten minutes travel time from
Dealey Plaza.
The assassin was identified as Lee Harvey Oswald, a former US Marine and
equally former defector to the Soviet Union, as well as a known Communist
sympathizer. Oswald was also charged with the murder of Dallas Police Officer
J.D. Tippet, who according to eyewitnesses was killed by a man resembling
Oswald at ~1:15pm CST, who had stopped Oswald as he fit the description of
the suspect in the President's assassination. Two days after his arrest, Oswald
was being escorted to a more secure police facility when he himself was shot by
Dallas strip joint owner and local law enforcement "tag along" Jack Ruby (AKA
"Jack Rubenstein") on live network television. Oswald died at Parkland Hospital
without regaining consciousness, and Ruby was convicted for the murder and
sentenced to the electric chair. Ruby died of cancer in 1967 before the sentence
could be carried out.

Who Designed JFK Reloaded?

The program was designed and released by Traffic Software - aka "Traffic
Games" - on November 21st, 2004, one day before the 41st anniversary of the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Traffic is a Glasgow, Scotland-
based that currently has no other known products save for the program, nor
any company website save for the www.jfkreloaded.com website. Per the
program's website, the company's contact info is listed only as:

Traffic
PO Box 21552
Stirling, FK8 1WW
Tel: 0870 141 7371

According to Traffic, it took a ten-man team over a year to research and

program an accurate recreation of the surroundings and events that occurred in
Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963. To date, none of the design team has
been identified other than Kirk Ewing, the company's Marketing Director, who
fielded all questions from the press regarding the program, as well as
apparently taking a lot of heat from those who found JFK Reloaded
disrespectful to the slain President's memory.
UPDATE: Around September of 2005, I got several e-mails notifying me that
www.jfkreloaded.com was no longer up and running. It's back up now, but
all you get is a small image and some text which reads as follows:
