Exam #2

Group:

Section: 9am 1pm

1. (1 point) True or False: F=ma.

2. (33 points)
Identical constant forces continuously push blocks A with mass M and B with
mass 2M for five seconds. Both blocks are initially at rest.

Start

F
M Block A

F 5 seconds
2M Block B

a. (6 points) Which block has the largest change in momentum? (Circle your
answer.)

i) A
ii) B
iii) They have the same change in momentum
iv) Need more information

(10 points) Explain your reasoning:

Change in momentum is force times time. Since they are both pushed with the same
force and time, then ∆p is the same in each case.

b. (6 points) Which block has the largest change in kinetic energy? (Circle your
answer.)

i) A
ii) B
iii) They have the same change in energy
iv) Need more information

(12 points) Explain your reasoning:

Block A has the smaller mass, so a larger acceleration. Thus, in 5 seconds, it
travels a greater distance. Since ∆E=F∆x, then block A has the largest change in
kinetic energy.

A coin is placed on a turntable as shown in the diagram below (top view).

a. (11 points)
On the diagram above for the position shown, sketch the velocity,
acceleration, and net force vectors on the coin.

b. (11 points)
Draw a free body diagram for the coin as viewed from the side. Label all
forces and indicate the direction of the center of the turntable.

c. (11 points)
If the coin rotates at a radius of 20 cm from the center of the turntable, and
has a coefficient of friction of 0.12, what is the maximum speed the coin
can have without slipping on the turntable.

Tarzan swings on a vine from a cliff to rescue
Jane who is standing on the ground surrounded
by snakes. His plan is to push off of a cliff,
swing on a handy vine, grab Jane at the lowest Tarzan
point of his swing, and carry them both to the
safety of a nearby tree. Tarzan’s mass is 80
kg, Jane’s mass is 40 kg, the height of the
lowest tree limb is 10 m, and Tarzan is Jane
initially standing on a cliff of height 20 m. H
The length of the vine is 30 m. h

snakes on the ground

With what speed should Tarzan push off of the cliff if he and Jane are to make it to
the lowest tree limb successfully?

Be sure to start from basic principles and show all of your work.

Energy is conserved before Tarzan catches Jane. Momentum is conserved when he

catches her. Finally, energy is conserved after he catches her and before he reaches
the tree branch. Tarzan must have enough energy to reach the tree branch (with zero
velocity). The problem can be broken into three parts. The first part is energy
conservation before he catches her. The second part is momentum conservation
when he catches her. The final part is energy conservation again.

Part I: Energy conservation while Tarzan swings to Jane. We set the zero coordinate
to be the ground, so potential energy is equal to zero at this point. We must find
Tarzan’s velocity when he reaches Jane. We set Tarzan’s mass to M and Jane’s mass
to m.
E f = Ei
1 1 2 2 2
Mv 2 = MgH + Mv0 → v 2 = 2 gH + v0 → v = 2 gH + v 0
2 2

Part II: Momentum conservation during the catch. Momentum is all in the x
direction.
pi = p f
Mv = ( M + m)v f
M M 2
→ vf = v= 2 gH + v0
M +m M +m

Part III: Energy conservation. In order for Tarzan to reach the lowest branch, we
assume that he barely makes it with v=0. His initial potential energy is zero.
