JEWISH OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The Jewish Outdoor Leadership Institute (JOLI) with Camp Ramah of the Rockies is a dynamic new program that trains
Jewish teens (entering 11th &12th graders) to become competent and confident outdoor leaders. JOLI participants spend
about half of their time at our rustic base camp, known as the Ramah in the Rockies ranch, living alongside chalutzim (pio-
neers/campers) in the Ramah Outdoor Adventure camp. Participants live in their own tent with a counselor but share facili-

Get Wild on Purim – It’s a Tradition!

people who are willing to “ham it
up” for Purim. No particular talent
is needed.

Join us on Saturday, March 19th at 7:00 PM for a traditionally
irreverent rendition of the Megilla, as we chant, mock, parody, dance
and rhyme the Book of Esther, fulfilling our sacred duty to have a
grand ol’ time on Purim. Some of the finest home-grown Jewish
‘talent’ in Northern Colorado will present creative interpretations of the
Megillah while the rest of us laugh at and yell at Haman (boo!).
Come as you are or come as you aren’t. (You never know which
famous characters might show up!)
Bring a dessert to share and your own libations. Bring your
donations to the Food Bank for Larimer County, too!

Four Mitzvot of Purim

1 HEARING THE READING OF THE
MEGILLAH – Traditionally, both men
and women are obligated to hear the
reading of the Megillah twice, once
at night and the next morning. It is
preferable to hear the Megillah with a
large number of people (B’rov am hadrat
Melech -’with the multitude of the nation
is the King honored’ - Proverbs 14:28).
And of course, we need to make noise
when Haman’s name is mentioned!
There is a custom of contributing 3
half-dollar coins or their equivalent to
charity, before the Megillah reading in
the synagogue, to symbolize the half-
shekel which every Jew gave as dues to
the Temple in Jerusalem (Ex 30:11-16).
So remember to bring your coins and
dollars to donate to the Food Bank for
Larimer County.
2 REJOICING – We are directed to
celebrate a joyous Purim day feast/
seudah. This year, Mitzvah Day, Sunday,
March 20th, is the same day as Purim,
so we all should participate together in
Mitzvah Day with joyous energy…and
don’t forget to eat together! Contact the
office if you would like to help plan this
event.
3 SENDING FOOD TO FRIENDS
(mishloach manot) – To strengthen
community connections, we are directed
to send 2 types of ready-to-eat foods to
at least one friend, preferably on Purim
day itself.
4 GIVING GIFTS TO THE POOR
(matanot la’evyonim) – Each person
above the age of B’nai Mitzvah is
obligated to donate to at least 2
poor people (or to a community
representative). Please bring your
food donations for the Food Bank for
Larimer County to the Megillah event on
Saturday, March 19.
