JOB TITLE: Community Organising Coordinator, Indonesia


AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ENTITY: Indonesia National Office

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Permanet Role

JOB PURPOSE:

To develop and implement activism strategies for Amnesty International Indonesia activist
networks which consist of more than 85 local action groups and university chapters. This
role is responsible for acquiring, retaining, as well as mobilise Amnesty activists to support
Amnesty International Indonesia campaign priorities. This is done to enable a progressively
deeper level of engagement and strengthen our campaign impact as well as support
Amnesty Indonesia supporter growth target.

AI INDONESIA PURPOSE: Amnesty International Indonesia is a national human rights


entity that is part of a global human rights movement, established to address national
human rights priorities as well as create the possibility for people in Indonesia to join
Amnesty International’s global human rights campaigns. Our mission in Indonesia is to
address pertinent national human rights issues through research, campaigning and human
rights education, and to empower Indonesians to take action on issues that matter to them
through AI’s international human rights movement; and to leverage Indonesia’s influence
regionally and globally to promote human rights domestically, bilaterally and
internationally.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PURPOSE: We campaign for meaningful human rights


change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and
other actors to uphold universal rights standards.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reporting to: Manager of Growth and Community Engagement

People that this job manage: This role will manage interns / volunteers and, most likely,
staff at the officer level

Other key relationships: Campaign staff, Research staff, Communication staff, Office and
Finance

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Grow and develop activist base:


• Lead the development and implementation of strategies and plan(s) for the
recruitment and retention of activists and action groups and chapters.
• Identify and analyse potential for new action groups, activists and allies.
• Design and implement capacity building program to train and empower activists to
campaign effectively in their community in line with organizational priorities.
• Develop activists’ skills in strategic campaigning and other campaign skills.

• Mentor activist leaders to ensure their development as human right defenders.

Campaign coordination and mobilisation of activists:


• Lead the development of local campaign strategies and tactics consistent with AII’s
campaigns’ and organizational objective.
• Develop, implement and evaluate strategies to strengthen the participation of
activists in AII’s campaigns and activities.
• Mobilise action groups and chapters on both rapid response and planned
campaigns (PENA and Write for Rights)
• Provide advice and support for activist organizing campaign activities and event.
• Work with activists to build relationship with external stakeholders.

Support AI Indonesia supporter growth target:

• Develop strategies to ensure the division contribution to AI Indonesia growth target


• Develop and implement growth monitoring system to track overall AII supporter
growth through community organizing activities

Managing, coordinating, and reporting within the organization:

• Work with other team members to ensure the effective planning and coordination of
organizing activities across Indonesia.
• Work with Amnesty International staff in other sections/national offices as well as
the International Secretariat as necessary.
• Lead and coordinate the work of staff, interns and volunteers in the Community
Organising program.
• Contribute to the development of AII’s policies and procedures as required.
• Report and evaluate AII Community Organising program periodically.
• Represent the team in project meetings as relevant.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB?


• S/he will have developed and implemented action groups and chapters acquisition,
retention, and mobilization strategies to enable effective movement building
through strong mobilization.
• S/he will have developed and effectively implemented AII activism strategies to
involve supporters, activists, and volunteers in supporting AII key campaign
priorities.
• S/he will have successfully supported GCE supporter growth target by mobilising
activists to recruit supporters through their campaign events.
• S/he will have contributed to the effective functioning of the team, and to the
implementation of AI Indonesia’s mission, upholding AI Indonesia and AI’s values
at all times.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• At least 4 years of experience in Community Organising


• Experience of successfully establishing and retaining activist groups including
networks of remote activist groups.
• Understanding of and commitment to human rights and Amnesty International
Indonesia’s vision.

• Excellent communication skills including experience in writing and delivery of
training and speaking to large groups.
• Proven ability to work with limited supervision and manage own work load day-to-
day while handling competing priorities and deadlines.
• Experience in managing the delivery of campaigns and an understanding of
strategic campaigning.
• Ability to network and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the
community.
• Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills, including the ability to enthuse,
motivate and support others including experience in working with volunteer teams.
• Ability to undertake regular travel and to work outside of normal business hours on
a regular basis.
• Qualifications in training.
• Experience with communication technology especially email systems and
databases.
