M.A./M.Sc.

Semester - IV Examination, 2020 (CBCS)

Subject: Mathematics (New Syllabus)
(Pure Stream)
Course: MMATP – 401 & MMATP – 402

Time: 2 Hours Full Marks: 40

The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.
Notations and symbols have their usual meaning.
Use separate booklets for each course.

Course: MMATP- 401 (Abstract Algebra-III)

(Marks: 20)

Answer any two questions. Only first two answers will be evaluated. 2x10 = 20

1. Let 𝐾 and 𝐾′ be two fields. Let 𝜎: 𝐾 → 𝐾′ be an isomorphism and 𝑝(𝑥) be an irreducible

polynomial over 𝐾. If 𝛽 and 𝛽′ are roots of 𝑝(𝑥) ∈ 𝐾[𝑥] and 𝑝′(𝑥) ∈ 𝐾′[𝑋] respectively,
then prove that 𝜎 can be extended to an isomorphism 𝜎̃: 𝐾(𝛽) → 𝐾′(𝛽′) such that 𝜎̃(𝛽) =
𝛽′. [10]

2. a. Find a splitting field 𝑆 of the polynomial 𝑝(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 𝑥 + 1 over ℚ and also deduce
its degree over ℚ.
b. Let 𝐹/𝐾 be a field extension and 𝐾 be an infinite field. If 𝛼 ∈ 𝐹 is algebraic and 𝛽 ∈
𝐹 is separable over 𝐾, then show that 𝐾(𝛼, 𝛽)/𝐾is a simple extension. [3+7]
3. a. Let 𝛼 be a root of the polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) ∈ 𝐾[𝑥]. Show that 𝛼 is a repeated root of 𝑓(𝑥)
if and only if 𝑓′(𝛼) = 0.
b. Prove that every polynomial over a field of characteristic 0 is separable. [5+5]

Course: MMATP- 402 (Calculus of Rn –II)

(Marks: 20)

Answer any two questions. (Only first two answers will be evaluated) 10×2 = 20

1. (a) Let 𝑓: [1, 3] × [5, 8] → ℝ be a function, defined by

1, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = {
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒.
Is 𝑓 integrable over [1, 3] × [5, 8] ? Support your answer.
(b) Let 𝑆 be a bounded set in ℝ𝑛 and 𝑓, 𝑔 ∶ 𝑆 → ℝ be two bounded functions. Suppose
𝑓, 𝑔 are integrable over 𝑆 and 𝑓(𝑥) ≤ 𝑔(𝑥), ∀ 𝑥 ∈ 𝑆. Prove that ∫𝑆 𝑓 ≤ ∫𝑆 𝑔. [5+5]

2. (a) Define a set of measure zero in ℝ𝑛 .

(b) Let 𝑆 be a bounded set in ℝ𝑛 and 𝑓: 𝑆 → ℝ be a bounded continuous function. Let

𝐸 = { 𝑥0 ∈ 𝐵𝑑 𝑆: lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑠 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑}. If 𝐸 is a set of measure zero,
𝑥 →𝑥0
then show that 𝑓 is integrable over 𝑆, where 𝐵𝑑 𝑆 is the boundary of 𝑆. [2+8]

3. (a) Define extended integral of a continuous, non-negative function on an open set in ℝ𝑛 .

(b) Let 𝐵 be an open subset of ℝ2 defined by 𝐵 = { (𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ ℝ2 ∶ 𝑥 > 0, 𝑦 >

0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 < 36 }. Using change of variables, evaluate ∫𝐵 𝑥 2 𝑦 2 . [2+8]
