Programme Aim
• The programme aims at producing graduates with
deep content knowledge and research skills in their
respective areas of specialisation.
• There are 11 areas of specialisation offered in this
programme:
Candidature
• Students may choose to undertake the programme either as
full-time or part-time candidates.
• The minimum and maximum duration of candidature for full-
time candidates is 1 year and 2 years, respectively.
• The minimum and maximum duration of candidature for part-
time candidates is 2 years and 4 years, respectively.
Curriculum Structure
• The programme consists of two components: Coursework
Component & Research Component
• The total number of units required for graduation is 40 units.

Specialisation Courses (9 units)

• The specialisation courses are specific to the area of


specialisation of the student.
• A total of 3 courses are offered in each area of
specialisation.
• These courses are given the code C (Core) [or
T(Teras) in Malay] which means they are compulsory
for students to take and pass with at least a C+.

Education Course (3 units)

• The education course, PMC515 Education and


Development (3 units), aims to give students of all
areas of specialisation a broad knowledge base
regarding various issues, ideas and perspectives in
education and its relationship and role in development.
• This course is given the code C (Core) [or T(Teras) in
Malay] which means it is compulsory for students to
take and pass with at least a C+.
• This course is offered only in Semester I.
Research Courses (8 units)
• The research courses aim to give students of all areas
of specialisation exposure and training in research
methods, quantitative and qualitative approaches and
appropriate techniques of data analysis in conducting
an educational research.
• The 2 research courses are:
– PMC 500: Statistical Reasoning in Educational Research
(4 units)
– PMC 501: Research Methodology in Education (4 units)
• These courses are given the code C (Core) [or
T(Teras) in Malay] which means it is compulsory for
students to take and pass with at least a C+.
• Both courses are offered in Semester I and Semester
II.
Dissertation course (20 units)

• For PMC 599 Dissertation course (20 units),


students of all areas of specialisation are required
to carry out a research and complete a dissertation
related to their area of specialisation under the
guidance of an appointed supervisor.
• This course is given the code C (Core) [or T(Teras)
in Malay] which means it is compulsory for
students to take and pass.
• This course is offered in Semester I and Semester
II.
Dissertation course (20 units)
• The length of the dissertation is between 25,000 and
30,000 words (approximately between 100 and 120
pages of A4 paper which is based on 250 words per
page) excluding references and appendices.
• Every student will be assigned a supervisor at the
beginning of the first semester and the student should
consult his/her supervisor to prepare a research
proposal and pass the proposal defence before
registering for the Dissertation course.
• There will be a briefing for students before they
register for the Dissertation course.
• The dissertation must be completed in 1 semester
for full-time students but 2 semesters for part-time
students.
Dissertation course (20 units)

• Full-time students who intend to complete the


programme within the minimum period of
candidature (1 year) are advised to register for
PMC 599 in Semester II of their first year of
study.
• Part-time students who intend to complete the
programme within the minimum period of
candidature (2 years) are advised to register for
PMC 599 in Semester I of their second year of
study.

Research Training Programme

• The Research Training Programme (RTP) consists of 3


workshops in every semester which aims at enhancing
students’ knowledge and skills in conducting research
and successfully complete their dissertation within the

Malay Language Requirement

Attendance in Lectures/Tutorials

• University regulations stipulate that a student can be


barred from taking a particular course examination if
their attendance in lectures/tutorials is less than 70% of
the actual teaching time.
Assessment of Students’ Performance

• Assessment of students’ performance in the examination,


coursework or presentation is based on the Cumulative Grade
Point Average (CGPA) marking system as shown in the
following table:

• The pass grade for all courses is C+ (2.33) and above.


Students who obtain Grade C and below are required to
repeat the course in a regular semester or as a course offered
during the Long Break period, provided the course is offered,
with the Dean’s approval.
Assessment of Students’ Performance

• Students have to achieve a CGPA ≥ 3.00 in order to


fulfill the graduation requirements.
• Students who fail to meet this condition may repeat the
course or take selected examination papers for the
purpose of upgrading their CGPA in order to graduate
depending on the maximum duration allowed for the
candidature (i.e., 2 years for full-time and 4 years for
part-time).
Assessment of Students’ Performance

• The assessment of the dissertation is based on a


pass/fail system.
• Students must pass the dissertation in order to fulfill
the graduation requirements.

Status of Candidature

• All full- or part-time students must register in at least one


course in every semester during their candidature.
• The University may terminate the study of any student
who fails to register for at least one course without any
valid reason.
• Students who fail to register for a course in a particular
semester must apply for a postponement of study in the
same semester in order for their candidature to remain
active.
• Under normal circumstances, students are not
encouraged to postpone their study. However, in cases
involving health or other important reasons, students may
apply to postpone their study through the Campus Online
portal at https://campusonline.usm.my/
