Ishmael Yamson and Associates focuses on providing value-driven strategic management

through the provision of leadership training and development programmes, organisational
renewal and corporate advisory services to public institutions and private businesses.

The main scope of our services includes:

 Visioning and Strategy definition: We help companies and organisations define

their vision, strategies and plans that create great, prosperous companies on a sustainable
basis. In doing so, we ensure that companies translate STRATEGY INTO ACTION.
 Organisational Reviews & Change Management: We help companies and
organisations align their structures, people, values and behaviours to their vision, strategies
and plans. We partner with them to design the right management systems and processes
which support the delivery of organisational goals.
 Systems & Process review: A company’s operational processes and systems are
what enable it to run efficiently. If not aligned properly, the company experiences slow,
complex, bureaucratic and expensive setups which destroy productivity and undermine
initiative. We work with companies and organisations to review how these wheels are turning
and help streamline them to provide the right platform for efficiency and productivity gains.
 Coaching and Mentoring: we provide interactive processes through which managers
and supervisors are required to solve performance problems or develop capabilities. The
process relies on collaboration and is based on three components; technical help, personal
support and individual challenges. Coaching and mentoring is a person-to-person experience
to support the development of individuals.
 Corporate Services: We offer exclusive consultancy services on capacity building
including recruitment, training and development, as well as retention and pension planning.
 Management Education: We bring an overview of current management thinking
and development and what changes today are charting tomorrow’s management’s paths. We
run seminars with professional business and strategy leaders to educate and develop leaders.
 Brand and Channel Development: We help business teams to discover and formulate
powerful consumer, shopper and trade insights to guide brand vision and strategy development.

PROGRAMME 1

RESPONDING TO THE GLOBAL RECESSION AND LOCAL MACRO INSTABILITY FOR

SUSTAINED GROWTH AND PROSPERITY

SUMMARY
The world has changed drastically and it is going through the worst recession since World War II.
Companies and countries expect some economic slowdown in 2009 and are facing the risk of failure
with the serious consequences of negative growth and profitability as well as trade flows,
unemployment and social instability. Yet the depth of this crisis is unknown.

These have grave implications for Ghana’s corporate and public sector organizations and institutions.
In addition to the global down turn the situation in the country has been compounded by a fiscal crisis
which has fed into an unstable macro economy (rising inflation and interest rates and Cedi
depreciation) at a pace not seen in the last 8 years.

Managing businesses and organizations in the midst of adverse internal and external conditions can
be daunting. It requires new approaches, new strategies and new tools to not only to survive but to
grow and become even more prosperous.

It is a fact that in a period of crisis opportunities abound. This programme will help not only to take
control over the crisis from the dual challenge but will help develop the new strategies, tools and
business-like orientations to stay ahead and to take advantage of the hidden opportunities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This programme will give participants:

1. A deeper understanding of challenges facing businesses and organizations

2. A set of tools to develop the right kind of strategic responses to these challenges
3. The confidence to make the right kind of decisions that will secure growth and prosperity

PROGRAMME 2

FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP

SUMMARY
Leadership is critical for the success of every business and it is even more so now than ever before.
In the past decade or so we have been in the midst of a global economic revolution that were driven
by three dominating factors;
1. Globalization and the adoption of all continents of liberalized market economies,
2. The associated accelerated opening up of developed and developing economies to trade,
capital and knowledge flows, and
3. The startling technological revolution, most apparent in digital electronics and in genetics and
biotechnology.

The three presented a time of great opportunities as well as threats for companies and organisations.
Only those which have the right leadership with the right skills and profiles at all levels of the
organization can ensure sustainable growth and profitability through the decisions they take.

In recent past these factors have been over laid by a global recession which is further redefining the
way businesses and organization will survive and compete.

5. Raise the awareness, understanding and effectiveness of leaders to the qualities of
decisiveness, committing to stewarding decisions, and being accountable for the business impact of
the decisions they make.

PROGRAMME 4

PLANNING FOR TALENT RECRUITMENT, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT,

SUCCESSION AND RETENTION

SUMMARY
Many organisations and businesses tend to react to their need for successive leaders only when the
gaps appear. In such organisations, ensuring the availability of the right talent at all levels at all times
and planning for it is not managed as a strategic issue.

The obvious risks are that individuals are thrust into positions of leadership who may not have the
skills and the passion to lead. Or gaps occur when there are no plans to fill them either from within or
outside. Eventually the companies suffer regrettable loses as a result of lack of clarity in career
planning.

It is therefore imperative that the human “raw material” required both for today and the future is
clearly specified, sought after, recruited and developed with clear career plans in mind and with clear
and committed effort to retain these people.

Planning for the future talent requirements must therefore be at the very core of every company’s
strategy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This module will help you:
1. Align your HR requirements to the vision and the strategies of the organisation;
2. Define the core jobs in your structure and the relevant skills required;
3. Define the set of competencies and capabilities that will drive the growth agenda of your
organisation;
4. Define clear career plans for employees;
5. Develop a recruitment, development and succession framework for your organisation to
support employee career plans.
6. Understand the link between performance, potential and progress in the organisation;
7. Evaluate process of continuous review of HR needs in line with changing business needs.

METHODOLOGY
Highly interactive. The programme is based on case studies and proven HR models that will arm
participants to create innovative approaches to this challenge.

TARGET:
This programme is designed for HR practitioners and Senior Managers.

PROGRAMME 5

USING REWARD SYSTEM TO DRIVE PRODUCTIVITY & GROWTH

SUMMARY
There is recognition of a strong link between the growth and performance of an enterprise and its
reward system. Studies and experience have shown that some reward systems raise productivity and
create value while others destroy value and kill organisations.

Once the framework for “Performance Management” has been set it is important to back it with an
appropriate Reward System to drive performance beyond the average. It seeks to use the Reward
System to drive the creation of strong value for organisations.

In this country for instance, it has become advantageous to be a member of a trade union because
union power has often been used to extract premium from employers even when organisations are
facing difficult market conditions and growth and profitability are under intense pressure. Though this
is changing the pace is slow and managers do not always understand the factors that should underpin
this change.

This Programme will help you deal with this dichotomy, build transparency into your reward system
and create the motivation for higher performance and increased productivity.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Using Reward System to Drive Productivity and Growth will help organisations shift from reward
systems driven by history and employee demands unrelated to productivity and value generation to
systems that create value and grow companies for the benefit of all stakeholders. The module covers:

1. Building the right organisational culture;

2. Making reward a value creation tool rather than simply a monetary contract;
3. Defining what should determine the reward system;
4. Transforming the reward system into a business opportunity;
5. Using the reward system to stimulate growth and improve productivity;
6. Defining the link between the reward, the individual and his/her performance;
7. Helping the organisation link rewards to performance at individual, team and corporate
levels.

METHODOLOGY
There will be presentations and group discussions. The programme will make use of case studies,
exercises and presentations by speakers.

PROGRAMME 6

OPTIMIZING ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES

FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY & PRODUCTIVITY

SUMMARY
When organizations and businesses clearly define and articulate their vision and strategies, the
potential obstacles to the achievement of the strategies are the “way they are set up to work” and
“how they actually work”.

In most cases the processes and the organization are put in place for internal convenience and to
resolve short term control issues. The effect is complexity and cost from multi-layered or under-
layered and conflicting systems and processes which do not add value to the business or its
customers.

It is important to review the systems and processes in the organization to build a structure, systems
and processes that respond to the current and future needs of the organization in order to drive
growth, profitability, efficiency and profitability.

In effect, it is important that from time to time an organization or business reviews its structure,
systems and processes to ensure that they are aligned to the delivery of strategy. It can also take the
form of a complete Greenfield exercise.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This Module will help you:
1. Align the structure and the processes of the organization to its strategic objectives;
2. To build efficiency into the processes and systems of your organization;
3. Align the company structure to drive the core processes that generate value for the business;
4. Use your structure, processes and systems as strategic tools to drive growth.

METHODOLOGY
This is a company specific programme and it covers a detailed walk through of the organization to
identify and eliminate non-value adding activities and processes. This involves working closely with
line managers who can make decisions on change and provide them with tools to help them make the
decisions required to align the structure to the businesses processes. It will also design a practical
approach to efficient execution of the outcomes of the review.

PROGRAMME 7

CHANGE MANAGEMENT

SUMMARY
Not many organizations and businesses recognize that change is inevitable in our constantly changing
environment. In a great number of situations change is imposed on companies and organisations.
Ideally change ought to be initiated by organizations and businesses to secure the future which in turn
gives them the right to market leadership and growth.

Many organizations also go through change processes only to arrive at where they were when they
begun. Managing change does not only mean putting a change plan on the table but it also involves
making the key decisions that serve as catalyst to achieve the desired changes. It requires
commitment to the execution of the planned changes.

CREATING HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAMS

SUMMARY
It is not enough to have very highly skilled individuals in any organisation, it is even more important
that the individuals learn to work in teams and apply their hearts to what they do. In every
organisation the output of the whole team should be much greater than the sum of the individual
outputs put together.

Research shows that teams go through a cycle of forming, storming, norming and performing.
Companies need to understand and respond to these cycles. Apart from the “hard” targets like
turnover, profit, productivity and so on teams also bond into high performing teams on “soft” issues
such as honesty, transparency, trust and support for each other.

Effective teams have been identified as a core factor to organizational success.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This Module will help team members;
1. Surrender individual interests to the common interest; build a sense of interdependency i.e.
Build a convergence of the “I” of the individual to that of the “Team” aspirations.
2. To use the team aspirations to drive individual aspirations.
3. To use targeting and reward systems to drive team behaviour.
4. To use the team platform to drive high performance in the company’s aspirations.
5. To understand team dynamics.
6. Identify their individual strengths and contribution to the team
7. Contribute collectively to define what their team/leadership behaviours will be to achieve
common goals.
8. Engage with hearts to deliver the team objectives.

PROGRAMME 9

CREATING BREAKTHROUGH STRATEGY FOR OUTSTANDING

PERFORMANCE

SUMMARY
In the liberalized global economy, change has become the only constant in the business environment.
The competitive advantages that have been driving the performance of companies are being lost in
shorter time frame than ever before. Strategies are beginning to decay faster and companies are
struggling to deliver performance that meets the expectations of their stakeholders. Sometimes their
very existence is threatened.

It is important that companies pursue strategies that continuously raise the bar to competition and
allow them to sustain and improve market shares in order to deliver strong growth and profitability.
It is a journey that has to be embarked upon regularly even if you feel you are ahead of competition.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Creating Breakthrough Strategy will help you;
1. Evaluate the changing patterns in your environment,
2. Bring understating to shifts in consumer and customer needs and expectations, and
3. Enable the team to develop strategies that allow the company to ‘snatch’ leadership from the
competition.

In doing this the programme will deploy team–building and team dynamics to build common
understanding, develop shared vision, strategies and plans to create commitment to implementation
excellence.

METHODOLOGY
This is an offsite programme. It is exciting but challenging. It requires transparency and trust. It is
designed to meet specific company needs.

TARGET
Management at all levels. It is preferred that there is a mix of management from all levels of the
organization.

DURATION: 3 days

PROGRAMME 10

THE LEADERSHIP JOURNEY

SUMMARY
Companies and Organisations need assurance of sustainable outstanding performance. To succeed in
creating this assurance requires that companies create shared vision and strategies, create high
performance teams where people trust each other and build a process of renewing the core engines of
growth.

Many Companies and Organisations pursue these initiatives either through seminars, workshops or
lectures. Others launch huge programmes with spectacular launches where the momentum then
fizzles away soon after the launch.

The Leadership Journey takes a completely new approach. It brings leaders together at a place
away from home and city life. All you need for this journey are your legs, your head, a pair of
walking shoes and stamina. The rest will be provided. The location will not be disclosed; it has to be
discovered. It is always an exciting journey.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Leadership Journey will help companies and organisations:

1. Challenge existing norms, beliefs and ways of doing things;

2. Crystallize the organization’s vision, mission, strategies and plans;
3. Build commitment to the delivery of the strategies and plans;
4. Provide guidelines for monitoring and evaluation;
5. It will also bond leaders together and challenge them to outstanding, sustained performance.

It is open and frank. You must experience it to believe it.

METHODOLOGY
Interactive discussions.

TARGETS
Middle to Senior Managers. Versions for junior managers and supervisors are also available.

DURATION: 3 days

COST: This is an out-of-location programme. The cost for the programme is GH¢20,000.00 and this

PROGRAMME 11

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

SUMMARY
The health of every business and organisation depends on the quality of its Corporate Governance
structures and compliance. Corporate Governance has assumed pre-eminence because it now defines
the benchmark for good corporate behaviour. Experience has shown that companies and organisations
with effective corporate governance culture achieve better and more sustainable performance.

Today, however big or small an organisation, public or private, wherever it is located, stakeholders
demand very high standards of corporate behaviour at all levels;
1. At the statutory Board level and the executive level,
2. In processes, systems and functions,
3. In the integrity of the results communicated to the public,
4. In the way risk is managed, and
5. At the level of the community and environment protection.

Corporate Governance has now been pushed beyond just conformance onto a strategic platform
where governance becomes a key driver of sustainable performance. For all organisations (public
and private) to remain viable and relevant, their corporate governance practices must be impeccable.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Corporate Governance Programme will help:
1. Board Chairmen, Chief Executives, Board members and other executives to understand the
critical need for good corporate governance,

PROGRAMME 12

SECURING AND MAINTAINING MARKET LEADERSHIP IN A COMPETITIVE

ENVIRONMENT

SUMMARY
In a competitive environment, companies and countries are constantly under threat of losing their
competitive advantage. With the competition, both new and old, constantly at the gate attacking the
architecture that created the current competitive advantage, companies and countries must seek to
unpack the declining business models and replace them with strategic innovation that will not only
optimize existing strengths but also change the rules of the game. Decaying strategies must give way
to new strategic agenda which create a staircase of new and unique capabilities, competencies and
skills to drive outstanding performance.

It requires companies and countries to liberate their minds to the dynamics of the environment, to
imagine the future and having imagined it, to create it.

In businesses as in countries, what distinguishes leaders from laggards, and greatness from mediocrity
is the ability to uniquely create an opportunity and take a bigger share of it on a sustainable basis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Market Leadership in a Competitive Environment programme will help managers of companies
and countries and parastatal organisations to:

1. Understand the imperatives of globalisation and the ‘flatness’ of the world in which we
operate;
2. Understand that in this boundary-less world, there are no permanent leaders and permanent
followers; winning and losing are strategic choices;
3. Understand that strategies can decay and will require renewal, innovation and replacement;
4. Appreciate that the future can never be a given unless it is created today;
5. To succeed requires not only being better but being different;
6. Understand that the challenge is not just for the CEO but for everybody in the organisation.

PEOPLE, IDEAS, BEHAVIOURS AND VALUES - THE ALCHEMY OF GROWTH AND

STRONG PERFORMANCE

SUMMARY
Ghana is now part of a globalised world economy, characterized by a fast pace of change and fierce
competition. Countries and organisations all over the world operate in a boundary-less world market.
No attempts by countries to erect economic barriers directly or indirectly have succeeded in
protecting their economies and companies from the harsh realities of global competition. To succeed
in this flat world and become a significant player, countries and companies must aggressively create:
1. High quality human resource endowment able to take on the challenge of world class
competition;

It is the convergence of these three planks – people, ideas and values that create great economies and
great companies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The programme will:
1. Define the global landscape;
2. Identify the globalization imperatives;
3. Highlight the opportunities and risks;
4. Contextualize human resource endowment, its application and the key role of behaviours and
values;

PROGRAMME 14

FROM ‘CUSTOMER LOYALTY’ TO ‘LOYALTY TO THE CUSTOMER’

SUMMARY
Many companies demand loyalty from their customers. They complain when their customers switch
to new brands or choose to do business with their competitors. They often blame what they see as
disloyalty to the fickle-mindedness of their customers. Oftentimes companies blame price as the main
cause of customers switching allegiance.

Many organisations fall into the same trap when their employees leave their employment. They leave
because they have either received offers they could not resist or they are the disgruntled and difficult
to please employees
Companies and organisations never pause to find out whether they have been loyal or disloyal to their
customers and employees.

The new thinking today is that loyalty to your customers and employees is the only way to generate
loyalty from them.

5. Understand how to involve customers in developing strategies and plans;

PROGRAMME 21

THE ROLE AND OBJECTIVES OF INTERNAL AUDIT

SUMMARY
Internal audit is an integral part of the financial structure of the public authorities and some private
companies. Most public authorities recognised the importance of internal audit many years ago.
Today very few, if any, public authorities operate without some form of internal audit. Over the years,
however, the precise role of internal audit has changed. In the early days, its primary responsibility
was concerned with the detection and prevention of errors and fraud, with perhaps an overdue
concentration on examining accounts before payments, collecting income and checking petty cash
claims. Today, internal audit operates in a: more dynamic environment with an emphasis on
reviewing systems of internal control. Internal audit exists within enterprises to carry out an
independent appraisal of the effectiveness of internal controls, financial and other operating within
each organisation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the session participants should be able to:
1. Explain the role and objectives of internal audit
2. Identify and apply internal auditing standards
3. Understand the essentials for planning, controlling and recording audit work
4. Explain the relationship between internal auditors and external auditors
5. Identify fraud and irregularities

METHODOLOGY

illustrate the topics.

TARGET
