Introduction
Simple past tense and present perfect tense in German are both used to describe the events
that happened in the past. The major difference is that past tense is used in written
language, whereas perfect tense is used in spoken language.
You all are aware that German verbs are categorized as weak verbs, strong verbs and mixed
verbs. The verb stems slightly change depending on the category. You can learn everything
in detail about simple past tense on our blog.
German perfect tense is built with the help of haben / sein in the present tense and past
participle (Partizip II) of another verb. Most of the verbs use haben, whereas verbs that
express movement and change of state use sein. The construction of past participles varies
based on the types of verbs. Learn in detail about present perfect tense on our blog.
In this e-book, we’ve listed down the past tense forms and past participles of all the
important and commonly used verbs. Of course it is not possible to by heart this list in one
go! However, keep practicing German daily and you’ll remember all these forms without any
difficulty.
To make things easy for you, we have highlighted the verbs that use sein in purple. Also,
watch out for ei → ie changes highlighted in red. For example: schreiben → geschrieben.
