WELCOME 2021 AND GOOD RIDDANCE TRUMP

The CMSC welcomes 2021 with hope, optimism and great expectations
for positive change, as Trump’s era of hate comes to an end and the
world is challenged to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s edition of El Magonista begins the 9th year of its publication

and you may read all previous editions on the “Newsletters” tab of
our website.
The CMSC will continue with our 3.5-years campaign to restore DACA’s
Advance Parole as its top priority, and we plan to expand this summer
the California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program.

While we continue to pressure USCIS to approve the current 83

Advance Parole applications for our Winter 2020 program, we realize
that this is unlikely under the despicable Trump administration.

But we are confident that all 83 AP travel permits will be approved soon
after President Joe Biden is sworn into office on January 20, 2021.

Thus, all participants of the Winter 2020 California-Mexico Dreamers

Study Abroad Program will have the option to travel with the CMSC
during the Spring or Summer 2021 sections of the program.

The CMSC will continue to focus on California-Mexico educational and

cultural exchange, as the pandemic is brought under control, and will
lead to promote the regional collaboration to abate the COVID virus
between the US and California with Mexico and the entire community of
nations in the western hemisphere.

May you all have a safe and healthful 2021 !!!

COPPPAL proposes to Biden a new relationship
between the US and Latin America

By: RedFinancieraMX – Jan. 4, 2021

The president of the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin

America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL), Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas,
said that the current critical circumstances that the world and the region
is experiencing, aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, represents a
great opportunity for the U.S. president-elect Joe Biden, in agreement
with the Latin American and Caribbean governments, to begin to
dialogue in symmetrical conditions on the continental problem and the
generation of a route of rapprochement that allows us to agree on a
minimum agenda of solution of the same, under criteria of mutual
respect.

If we want to transform the face of our continent, the progressive parties

grouped in COPPPAL, we believe that the way to do it is social
democracy and sustainable development, for them we have to work to
redefine the North-South relationship in our region, under the precepts
respect, cooperation and fostering shared development. This will give
us both subcontinents better conditions to face the great challenges
imposed by the time... Read Full Article

Alex Padilla named by Governor Newsom as

successor of Kamala Harris in the US Senate
By Shawn Hubler, New York Times – Dec. 22, 2020

SACRAMENTO — Alex Padilla, California’s secretary of state, has been

appointed to fill the Senate seat held by Vice President-elect Kamala
Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday, capping months
of intense political jockeying among Democratic factions in the state.
The son of Mexican-born immigrants who settled in Los Angeles’s San
Fernando Valley, Mr. Padilla, 47, will be the first Latino senator from
California, where Latinos are about 40 percent of the population. “I am
honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom,
and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver
for all Californians,” Mr. Padilla said in a statement... Read Full Article

Biden picks Latino as Secretary of Education

By EVAN HALPER, LOS ANGELES TIMES – DEC. 22, 2020

WASHINGTON — Joe Biden is poised to nominate Miguel Cardona as

secretary of Education. The schools chief in Connecticut pushed to
reopen campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged as a
consensus choice for the federal post with the backing of teachers
unions and Latino activists.

The president-elect’s choice of Cardona, who is of Puerto Rican

descent, would place a third Latino in a prominent position on his
Cabinet as the president-elect works to make good on his promise to
have a leadership team that reflects the diversity of the country. He
earlier nominated California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra, who is Mexican
American, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Cuban-born Alejandro Mayorkas was picked by Biden to lead the
Department of Homeland Security.... Read Full Article
Biden Inherits a Relationship with Mexico
on the Brink of Disaster

By: David Shortell, The Daily Beast – Mon, January 4, 2021

Days after the Mexican government adopted a set of crippling

restrictions on foreign law enforcement operations in the country, the
Trump administration is searching for a work-around and revisiting a
decades-old bilateral agreement in an attempt to untie the hands of U.S.
drug investigators.

The law, which was rushed through the Mexican legislature last month
amid the fallout over the arrest of the country’s former defense
chief on U.S. drug trafficking charges, has generated intense concern
at the Justice Department, where investigations into Mexico’s powerful
drug cartels have been imperiled by new requirements for agents to
share intelligence with the country’s government... Read Full Article

69% of undocumented immigrant workers have

jobs ‘essential’ to fight COVID

By Julia Ainsley, NBC News – Dec. 16, 2020

WASHINGTON — More than two-thirds of undocumented immigrant

workers have frontline jobs considered "essential" to the U.S. fight
against Covid-19, according to a new study released Wednesday by
pro-immigration reform group FWD.US.
Sixty-nine percent of undocumented immigrant workers have jobs
deemed essential by the Department of Homeland Security, according
to the study, which is based on the 2019 American Community Survey
by the Census Bureau. The study also estimated that nearly one in five
essential workers is an immigrant... Read Full Article

Support our California-Mexico

Dreamers Study Abroad Program

The CMSC continues to advocate for the Advance Parole approvals of

all 83 DACA recipients participating in our Winter 2020 California-
Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program, which was
originally planned to take place from December 15, 2020 to January 19,
2021. However, given that only 1 application has been approved so far,
we have to postpone the program until the Spring or Summer of this
year. This gives us an opportunity to fundraise and ensure the safety
and successful experience of all participants.
The CMSC launched a new fund drive initiative to solicit sponsors
and grants in support of our current California-Mexico Dreamers
Study Abroad Program.

We need to raise about $50,000 to cover the increased costs of the

program and ensure the safety of all participants while traveling in
Mexico during the pandemic. The additional costs are related to
increased expenses due to doubling the cost for single-room hotel
accommodations and all transportation costs due to social-distancing,
COVID-19 pre- and post-testing, and 24/7 medical attention and
prevention protocols.

Thus, we urge our community, Dreamers’ supporters, corporate and

business sponsors, community and church groups, and academic
colleagues to help us raise $50,000 by the end of the year with
donations of any amount, or by sponsoring at least one Dreamer
participant at $500 each.
