“RESOLUTION NO. 069-sb2013

“REQUESTING THE NATIONAL HISTORICAL INSTITUTE TO INFORM THE

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, PARTICULARLY THE PHILIPPINE CONSULATE
IN CANADA THAT THE CORRECT SPELLING OF THE NAME OF OUR TOWN IS
‘BALETE’ AND NOT ‘BALITE’ AS LISTED IN ITS DATABANK

“WHEREAS, the attention of this Sanggunian has been called by several Baleten-on
overseas foreign workers (OFWs) and expatriates based in Vancouver, Canada, of the insistence
of the Philippine Consulate of using the incorrect spelling of the Municipality of Balete, Aklan as
‘Municipality of Balite, Aklan,’ thereby complicating their records and portfolios;

“WHEREAS, the Local Government of Balete, Aklan has borne the ‘le’ variation in
spelling its name since its creation as a pueblo in 1804 as listed in the Historia Geografica,
Geologica y Estadistica con Datos Geograficos, Geologicos y Estadisticas de las Islas de Luzon,
Visayas, Mindanao y Jolo, y los que Corresponden a las Islas Batanes, Calamianes, Balabac,
Mindoro, Masbate, Tigao y Burias, situadas al n.so. y s. de Luzon by D. Agustin de la Cavada y
Mendez de Vigo as well as in other Spanish manuscripts; and during its reestablishment as a
municipality effective January 1, 1920 per the executive order signed by Gov. Gen. Francis
Burton Harrison on December 31, 1919 as indicated in the published Annual Report of the
Secretary of War of the United States of America, Volume 3, 1920;

“WHEREAS, the official name as presently used by this Local Government Unit and for
which it is known and addressed to by most government agencies, both local, national or
international is the ‘Municipality of Balete, Aklan’;

“WHEREAS, the National Historical Institute is one of the proper authorities that can
intervene in rectifying the error in the listing of names of LGUs’ in other government
institutions vis-à-vis their significance in the preservation of local and national history and
heritage.
