Whuthering Heights

Ambientato nella brughiera inglese di inizio Ottocento, Cime tempestose è la storia di Heathcliff, un
giovane ragazzo rimasto orfano che viene preso in custodia da Mr. Earnshaw, ricco gentiluomo
proprietario di Cime tempestose, un antico maniero immerso nelle campagne inglesi. Tra Heathcliff e
Catherine, figlia di Earnshow, si innesta fin da subito un tenero rapporto, una dolce relazione che inizia a
mostrare segni di cedimento per via delle profonde differenze sociali tra i due. Catherine decide quindi di
sposarsi con l’altolocato Edgar Linton mentre Heathcliff, tornato ricco da un viaggio in Inghilterra, decide
di vendicarsi sposando la sorella minore del suo rivale amoroso, la giovane Isabel.
Dopo aver dato alla luce la piccola Cathy ed aver confessato ad Heathcliff il proprio amore, Catherine
muore e l’uomo, pervaso dal sentimento di vendetta, decide di impossessarsi di tutti i possedimenti della
famiglia Earnshaw e della famiglia Linton; vi riesce e poco dopo muore, seppellito accanto a Catherine,
l’unica persona che abbia veramente amato.

Eliot

The waste land was published in 1922; it was dedicated to Ezra Pound. This work represents a new type
of poetry capable of expressing the post war sense of depression and collapse of values. It consists of
five sections: 1) “The burial of the
death”: it is centered on the opposition between sterility and fertility, death and life;
2) “A game of chess”: the opposition between the past splendor and the present squalor in historical
terms; 3) “The fire
sermon”: it deals with alienation through the description of a loveless, mechanical, sexual act;
4) “Death by water”: it describes spiritual emptiness. 5)
"What thunder said": it evokes an Indian myth according to which God speaks trough the voice of the
thunder inviting to a sort of sympathy with all human beings. The common theme which links the
different parts of "The waste land" is the decay and fragmentation of western culture. The great capacity
of Eliot is to link different fragments with several sources.
