Julfa (Jula) is one of the most famous and least documented Armenian cities of the pre-modern period. Its continuing fame is due in part to new Julfa, a suburb of Isfahan in the heart of Iran, founded by and for refugees from old Julfa. The importance of this commercial center to the history of international trade and the understanding of Armenian society in the sixteenth century warrants a detailed monograph.
