If you are following me in this blog, you might be aware of that I switched to Ubuntu 10.04 last
week. On changing, I had to give some effort to make sure my Reliance Netconnect broadband
connection working in Ubuntu. Here’s how I did it, based on referring several sources and
forums in the internet.
1. The MUST thing first – Buy a Reliance Netconnect broadband USB device! Most
probably it would be a huawei device and I assume it is.
2. Plug-it in any available USB port.
3. Ubuntu 10.04 should detect your device now. Now go to System -> Preferences ->
Network connections and select the Mobile Broadband tab. You’ll see something like
this:
4. From the above step, just follow whatever the wizard says (don’t worry! the wizard won’t
ask you to jump from the building). Select India in Providers Country page and select
Reliance in Provider page respectively.
5. In the last window, give a name to the connection (Reliance for example) and then enter
your USB device number which is nothing but the mobile number in the user name and
password fields (yes, both are same). In the Number field, type #777 if it is not already
there.
6. If you want, you can check the Connect automatically check box.
7. Now, click apply and you’re done. The connection should work now. If you didn’t select
connect automatically then you can click on the network icon on the Ubuntu top bar and
select your connection which you created just now.
Unfortunately, the above method did not work for me. So, I researched (googled, to be accurate)
a bit more and found another way.
1. In order to manually connect with Reliance netconnect broadband we need two packages:
wvdial (tool to make connections from a modem) and gnome-ppp (front end to the
wvdial).
2. These two packages have few dependencies too. Means you need to install all of them.
Since you do not have an active internet connection yet on your machine, you cant apt-
get anything. So, get a help from your friend who *might* be having an internet
connection system and download the below packages.
o libwvstreams4.6-base_4.6.1-1_i386.deb
o libwvstreams4.6-extras_4.6.1-1_i386.deb
o libuniconf4.6_4.6.1-1_i386.deb
o wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb
o gnome-ppp_0.3.23-1ubuntu2_i386.deb
3. Now bring the above downloaded files to your machine and install them (right click and
select Open with GDebi package installer) in the above given order.
4. Now open terminal window and give the command lsusb which will list all USB devices
attached to the laptop,. You must see the Hauwei device listed there. And then give the
command dmesg to see which port our model actually using. It would be something like
TTYUSB0, TTYUSB1, etc.
5. Now give the command sudo gnome-ppp to start the wvdial front end utility.
6. Now go to setup and in that window select the modem port (/dev/ttyUSB0 for example,
which you must have seen in the 4th step using dmesg command) in the Device field and
click detect. Your modem must be detected now. Then select Type as USB Modem and
select the maximum available speed for the speed field.
7. Click close and come back to the gnome-ppp front window. Enter the username and
password (which is your device number), #777 for the number and click connect. Now
you should be connected.
8. Here after, whenever you want to connect to internet, just open gnone-ppp and click
connect. The settings must have been saved already.
Fortunately, the above methid did work for me, because of which you are now seeing this post!

1) Check if the USB device (Reliance icon) is shown on the desktop is shown on
desktop/Computer windows. If yes, then your device is detected.
2) Open terminal, give lsusb and see if it lists Hauwei modem there. And then, give
dmesg in the terminal.
3) Now try to open gnome-ppp as explained on the post.

If lsusb displays the device name, then it means your modem was detected. You may try
un-plugging an plugging the device (I assume you might have already did that). Anyway,
try doing the setup in Gnome-ppp window and try all the USB names that are listed in the
gnome-ppp setup page (like, ttUSB0 or ttUSB1, etc)

Hi Veera,
Very informative post. I just installed ubuntu 10.0.4, and I am trying to go online with
Reliance Netconnect. Even for me 1st method didn’t work, hence I am trying method-2
now.
SMALL CORRECTION: In the first method -> step 3 – > Ubuntu 10.04 should detect
your device now. Now go to System -> Preferences -> Network connections and select
the Mobile Broadband tab. You’ll see something like this.
Screen does not come automatically, I had to click “Add” to get that screen.
Am I right ?
Thanks,
-Ashwin

first of all, Ubuntu is a free OS. so, you don’t need to pay a single penny to get the
software.. and many productivity applications comes bundled with Ubuntu (for free).
As far as I know, Ubuntu is the successful Linux variant which came so close to the
Windows experience. Even a no-techie guy could install Ubuntu and use it without much
difficulty.

I have tried Method 2. In step 7 when I click connect new window shows the status as
connecting… and it remains like this forever. I tried again but similar result. It comes till
the end and then says connecting… and remains connecting forever. Please advise me on
this. Thank you!

Hi Shanu,
Sometimes, I have faced the same issue. But to me it worked after few more tries.

As suggested I tried multiples times and waited for more than 10 mins each time. No
luck:(
FYI… I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on windows OS itself. Do you think that would be
the reason for this problem? I do not want to only install Ubuntu as I am new to it and
will take some time and confidence before I switch to Ubuntu completely. In addition, I
am not really sure if my reliance datacard will work on Ubuntu or not:). Please advise.

I suggest that you update to Ubuntu 10.10 and install Modem Manager along with USB-
Modeswitch.
10.10 and Modem Manager will solve the problem. Modem Manager of 10.04 has some
bugs as a result, many datacards are not working properly.

Thanks for a great compilation. The second method works for me. However, the
connection only establishes if i use the SUDO Gnome-PPP command from the terminal.
If i run it from the menu bar, it gives me a permission error for /usr/PPSD.

Nitesh,
Usually Ubuntu detects the USB broadband device. You need to go to network places ->
Mobile broadband and configure the username and password by following the wizard.

i tried method 2,and it worked upto the step showing the connection window and i
pressed the connect. afterwards its showing “connecting” only, and is not proceeding
further . what should i do ???!!!
my ubuntu is 10.04. is it because, i installed ubuntu inside the windows as a

Hi
I bought a dell mini, which has moblin with ubuntu 9.10 presinstalled. but ny problem is
that my reliance netcoonect plus(huawei) is not working. i downloaded network manager
also, but nothing happened.
Now if i switch to Ubuntu netbook edition, will it work? or ubuntu 10.10 desktop
edition? which distibution is best to shift to?
Reply
Ubuntu 10.10 is best. Indian based broadband services work just out-of-the-box in the
Ubuntu 10.10.
Reply
U mean the desktop edition? What about the netbook edition? will it not work on that?
Reply
I haven’t personally tried the netbook edition. But ideally it should work. Haven’t heard
any problems with netbook edition before.
