The Man Power graph is present as the default setting is for UNITS. Change this to COST.

To show the cumulative curve, select the CUMULATIVE selection boxes. Leave the SHOW LIMIT box
unchecked until finalizing the resource parameters.
The graph should look similar to the graphic below. Notice the cumulative curve line present.
If the bars do not look similar to the ones above select EDIT, USER PREFERENCES and select the RESOURCE
ANALYSIS tab and make sure the Interval for Time‐Distributed Resource Calculations is set to DAYS.

This will display the Manpower units spread across time as a graph. See graphic below. By double clicking on
the cumulative curve line the units at that moment in time will be displayed. See graphic below
Adjustments can be made to the timescale density or display by right clicking in the timescale area (in green).
To change graphical colors or other parameters right click in the graph and select the Resource Usage Profile
Options. See the graphic below.

Resource Activity Assignment – Assigning Quantities to Activities
As stated earlier, P6 has the ability to distinguish between labor, non‐labor, and materials in the activity’s
resources. Having already created a labor and non‐labor resource now create a material resource for the
training schedule. Make sure the activities details view is present at the bottom of the screen. VIEW, SHOW
ON BOTTOM, ACTIVITY DETAILS.
Remember the steps for adding a Resource.
1. Select Enterprise, Resources. This will display ALL Resources. Or select the Resources mode.
2. Select DISPLAY, FILTER BY, CURRENT PROJECT’S RESOURCES to only show the current project’s resources.
See graphic steps below.
3. Select the ADD button on the command bar menu on the right of the screen to add a new resource. A
dialog box will appear stating that the module needs to display ALL resources. Select OK.
After selecting OK, the Resource Wizard dialog box will appear to start the process of creating a new resource.

4. The first dialog box is the Resource ID and Name selection. Use the Resource ID and Name shown below,
then select NEXT. See graphic below.

5. The next dialog box is the Resource Type. Select MATERIAL to represent Quantities, then select NEXT to
move to the next dialog box. See graphic below.

6. The final dialog box for quantities is the Unit and Time Prices selection.
Select FINISH
As with the other resources, set the Default Units/Time and Max Units/Time to 0/d. Select FINISH as this
is the last screen needed to populate with information.
Development of the Cost Code Structure
Before Cost Codes can be created, it must be understood how the project is going to be built out. Ideally, the
CPM schedule has been negotiated in a manner that benefits M.C. Dean. The philosophy should always be;
how we are going to attack the project so that it maximizes crew flow efficiencies. Always look for repetitive
tasks that can be linked together to create crew flow. Some examples of crews: Underslab, Electric Room,
Communication Room, Substation, Power Distribution, Mechanical Room, Wall Rough‐in, Overhead Rough‐in,
Under floor Rough‐in, Fire Alarm, Security, etc…
To accurately develop a Cost Code Structure for any Project, it must be done by having a detailed review
process for every Contract Drawing Sheet (Effort lead by the Project Superintendent). The Following steps
should be applied to each Contract Drawing Sheet when reviewing to establish Labor Cost Codes.
1. Determine the Area Identifier
2. Determine the Crew Areas
3. Determine the Special Systems
4. Determine the Tracking System Activities

8. The Cost Accounts dialog box will appear asking to display all cost accounts. Select OK.

9. In the newly created Cost Account entry, populate the Cost Account ID and Cost Account Name fields.
Use the ID and Name show in the second graphic. See graphics below.

10. After creating the Resource Quantities and Cost Codes, the next step is to assign them to the proper
activities. Select the ACTIVITIES Mode and make sure the Activities Details window is open at the bottom
of the screen with the RESOURCES tab selected. See graphic below.
11. Right‐mouse click anywhere in the Activity Details section and select CUSTOMIZE RESOURCE COLUMNS.
From the Resource Assignment Columns dialog box choose COST ACCOUNT under the GENERAL selection
in the Available Options section. See graphics below.

12. With the newly created Cost Account column added, assign a new Resource Quantity and Cost Code to
Activity C10000. Select Add Resource button at the bottom of the Activity Details in the Resource tab. See
graphic below.
13. Next assign the newly created Resource Quantity 0100 1/2” to 1‐1/4” Conduit by double clicking on the
code in the Assign Resources dialog box or by selecting the Assign button . See graphic below.
14. After assigning the Resource Quantity now assign the amount. For activity C10000 assign 800 LF.

15. In conjunction with loading quantities, cost codes can also be assigned to the Resource Quanitity. In the
Cost Account column, select the lower right –hand corner of the cell which will bring up a selection dialog
box. Select B05ER0PS0100 from the available Cost Account IDs. See dialog box below.

Class Exercise:
From the table below first create each Resource then create the corresponding Cost Code in the BASE
project’s Resource and Cost Account dictionary. Then poulate each of the activities highlighted in yellow with
the corresponding quantities. The units (LF or Ea) are listed for each activity as well in the chart below.

When all the Material Resource Quantities have been created, assigned them to the correct activities, given
individual quantity measures, and assigned the correct Cost Codes check where they are listed in the body of
the resource dictionary.
1. To do that switch to the RESOURCE mode. In the RESOURCE mode scroll down to where the newly created
codes appear.

NOTE: Initially the Current Project’s Resources will not be displayed until they have been assigned to an
activity(s). Moving the Resource Quantities up and under the existing LUMPSUM resource code helps locate
the codes quicker when assigning codes for the first time.
2. Move the Resource Quantity codes up and indent them underneath the existing LUMPSUM Resource
Code. See Graphic below.

3. Switch back to the ACTIVITIES mode and display the RESOURCE USAGE PROFILE, by selecting VIEW, SHOW
ON BOTTOM, Resource Usage Profile.

4. Select each Resource Quantity on the left‐hand side of the Resource Usage window to view the graph on
the right‐hand side of the bottom display. See graphics below.
