This past year I made the switch from teaching
Spanish in a World Language program to Sheri Plath
teaching ESL to scholarship students at a Spanish and ESL Teacher
bilingual school in Guatemala. In a single class

I had a broad range of students from true
beginners to intermediate high students who
could confidently narrate in the past. While
merging WL standards with ELA standards to
prepare students to mainstream the very next
year, I explored new ways to differentiate to
make instruction comprehensible for the novice
learners while challenging the intermediate
learners.

Claudia discusses the connection between output and a strong community in a WL

class, the role of output in language acquisition, and strategies to support output and
build a strong community. With each strategy, she shares activities which are effective
in attaining the goal of having a supportive community in order for students to produce
output to communicate a message.
About Claudia
Claudia Elliott is a Spanish teacher at Paxon School for Advanced Studies in

Jacksonville Florida where she was selected TOY for 2020. Claudia has been teaching
Spanish since 2005. She is currently teaching Spanish 1, Spanish 3 IB, and AP Spanish
Language and Culture.
In recent years, Claudia has implemented dramatic changes to her teaching practices to
make her class more comprehensible, communicative, and community driven. Claudia
has been sharing her ideas and experiences with world language educators in different
forums such as FLENEF (Foreign Language Educators of Northeast Florida) and FFLA
(Florida Foreign Language Association).
Claudia also has collaborated in her county to develop a CI curriculum guide that aligns
with their textbook. Claudia has a very active FB Group (Growing with CI) where she
shares and supports other educators to understand and implement CI while building a
strong community in the classroom.
