You may have heard that 90% is a magic number for the
amount of target language use in the classroom. How
did we arrive at that number and how do we maintain it?
SHERI PLATH

Sheri’s presentation discusses strategies to increase the use of the target language by
both students and teachers in the world language classroom. She shares examples of
tasks that can be used with Level 1 students in the classroom and she suggests ways to
modify them for virtual classes. She provides examples of tasks for each language skill
as well as tips on how to conduct these activities online or in class.
About Sheri
Sheri is a Spanish and ESL teacher, and a creator of WL materials and speaking
proficiency-based curriculum. She developed a Speaking-Proficiency Based curriculum
at the American School of Dubai. She has around 20 years of teaching experience from
young learners to adult learners of a foreign language.
She has a K-12 certification, and she has experience working with students at the
primary and secondary levels. She has been teaching for 19 years, and she taught
Spanish for 18 of those years. Sheri has developed a speaking proficiency-based
curriculum across the languages of Spanish, French and Arabic, and she is trained in
both International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. Sheri is soon moving to
Guatemala to teach ESL, and while she is there, she aims to create plenty of content in
Spanish and English.

throughout his teaching and work with students. At Lindblom, he helped establish
Chicago’s first Arabic V course (during the 2014-15 school year).
He is a member of the Teacher Advisory Board for Al- Masdar and is the Co-founder of
