Self-Assessment Worksheet: Year 12 Film Opening Sequence Production

Please complete the worksheet by answering each of the following questions in full after
you have viewed the latest edit of your opening sequence.

Question 1: Which film genre is your opening sequence appropriate for? Is this the same
film genre that you intended to produce an opening sequence for? Explain.

Our opening sequence is for a dance film with a dark twist. it does fit the film genre that we
intended to produce an opening sequence for as it consisted of all the different things we
wanted it to have in it.

Question 2: Which conventions of the genre do you think you have applied effectively,
why?

We have applied effectively the type of music that would be used in a dance film as it is up
to date music with a beat. We also think that we used costume well as it showed the baggy
clothing that they wear in street film and the trainers to dance in. also we used sitting well
as we showed the dancers on a stage which shows they are performing and also we
danced in various other places as it show that they day wherever, whenever as it is their
passion and street dance did start on the streets.

Question 3: Which conventions have you challenged? How have you done this?

We have challenged the convention that there would be a romance taking place, we didn’t
want this as we wanted it to based on dance mainly, and not the romance between
dancers. We also challenged the convention that they characters wouldn’t be nice to each
other within a dance group, but they use each other to achieve their dreams and deep
down actually hate each other.

Question 4: Who are the target audience? Do you think your opening sequence would
appeal to your target audience? Why?

Our target audience is teen females and people who like to dance and are part of the
dance culture. I think the opening sequence will appeal to our target audience as it
immediately shows the different characters show different styles of dance an the voice
over starts the story as soon as the opening sequence starts and so will catch their
attention and make them want to see what happens throughout the story, makes them
want to know more and what the effects are. Also how the dancers are represented.

Question 5: What do you need to improve about your opening sequence? Explain your
reasoning.

To improve our opening sequence we would need to adjust some of our transitions as they
do not fit as best as they could with our opening sequence at the moment. We also need
to adjust our music that the dance performance is done to as it goes a little distorted where
we have cut the scene and moved it around a little throughout the editing process.

Question 6: How long is your opening sequence precisely?

Our opening sequence is 1minute and 56seconds.

Question 7: What has been your role in the production; from the initial idea to this point?
How have you fulfilled your role?

I researched into the different conventions which take place in the different dance films
that are around at the moment. Also I worked on the main dance that would be viewed in
the dance film’s performance. Also I worked on parted on parts of the story board and
where different scenes would take place. I also helped with the editing as I would make
suggestions and change things within our group editing process to help to make our film
make more sense and fit the conventions as best as possible, and keep it flowing.

Question 8: How have you developed your skills in the use of technology? Give
examples.

I have developed my skills by using different software on the mac such as garage band
and live type. This has made me have different ideas on how I can make my projects
better and where I can make and add different things to my projects to make them more
appropriate and to fit the genre better. Also to make it more professional.
