What is a Corporate GIS?

• Provides a means to access data within an organisation, irrespective of its
format (spatial or non-spatial)
• Integrates with relevant corporate applications
• Spatial data
– Cadastre, roads, sewer, storm water, planning, flooding, aerial photography etc.
• Integrate spatial data with other corporate databases
– Asset Management, Property & Rating, Document Management Systems, etc.
• Present it in a single user interface
• Provides a coordinated approach to GIS rather than fragmented desktop
installations
• Available to a wide variety of users including non-GIS trained

Corporate GIS – MapInfo Exponare

• Provides access to almost any data source in real‐time for
interrogation and presentation.
• Designed to allow end users of various skill levels to connect to
many sources of corporate data concurrently, analyse the
relationships and make informed decisions from the benefit of a
comprehensive perspective.
• It has been designed to enable organisations to meet the needs of
users within their organisation and that of their customers – the
general public.
Background – Litchfield Council

Information provided by Russell Anderson, CEO, Litchfield Council
• Litchfield Council previously used some basic viewing tools for GIS
(i.e. ArcExplorer & it was not integrated with other Council data. Could not edit or create spatial data)
• Council has no IT staff and utilises external consultants

• Litchfield identified a need for a GIS database that incorporated all Council
information included in Practical (& Authority)
(dog data, rate/land ownership, asset management, cemetery etc)
• Needed to be compatible with NTG data that would be integrated

(Flooding, Contours, Soil Type, Fauna, Flora, Planning, Wards, Localities etc)
• Required a system that is commonly used by other councils so staff are familiar
with the product
(All 5 municipal councils in the NT use MapInfo and 50 (out of 68) in SA use MapInfo as their primary GIS)
