The Effectiveness of the Banana Sap in the

Treatment of Alopecia or Baldness

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In every day life, people always want to look pleasing to the perception of
others. So they wear nice and appropriate clothing, put on some nice make-up,
spray some nice aromatic scent of perfume, wear fashionable and with extensive
price gears and shiny jewelries and most of all wear the most fashionable
hairstyle to be socially acceptable and can follow to what the society calls as
social norm. As of course, the ability to follow and jive to social norms will let the
person to be free from emotional conflicts and psychological conflicts brought
about by the society. Aside from following social norms, this situation also is an
opportunity for others for self realization about themselves and how they can
improve themselves for the better result. Clearly, this is the field of the beauty
industry but why should be the medical field be concern about it. This study will
tackle bout that later in this chapter. In most people, the hairstyle counts most. As
what profound and famous hairstylist would say, the hair will make a statement of
your personality. And that is true, because for some reason, the hair is a
contributory factor in building self-confidence.

Talking about self-confidence, it gives us the thought of being able to

stand in front of many and do things without any awkward feelings. And looking
confident also means being competent which is really necessary in some point
for our life, well at least, people will trust us on our jobs, deeds and will enable to
entitle us on responsibilities since a person will look competent. Also, a good
statement of the hair will enable us to build self-esteem. Since one can have a
good looking hairstyle, that person can establish a good body image of himself or
herself. And when we talk about developing a good body image, one can then
develop a good self esteem of itself. It is in self-esteem that we can act normal
and not aloof or outcast by the society and community. It is in self esteem that we
develop a sense realization, well that is if you look good or bad. So by these
concepts alone, we realize how important a good and presentable hair is, so
therefore it is important that we keep our hairs healthy and free it from any
unsatisfactory circumstances. But in order for a person to take care of such
things, one must have a full understanding of what is hair, how does it grow and
work and what does it do.

The hair on our heads isn't just there for looks. It keeps us warm by
preserving heat. The hair in the nose, ears, and around the eyes protects these
sensitive areas from dust and other small particles. Eyebrows and eyelashes
protect eyes by decreasing the amount of light and particles that go into them.
The fine hair that covers the body provides warmth and protects the skin. Hair
also cushions the body against injury. Human hair consists of the hair shaft,
which projects from the skin's surface, and the root, a soft thickened bulb at the
base of the hair embedded in the skin. The root ends in the hair bulb, which sits
in a sac-like pit in the skin called the follicle, from which the hair grows.

At the bottom of the follicle is the papilla, where hair growth actually takes
place. The papilla contains an artery that nourishes the root of the hair. As cells
multiply and produce keratin to harden the structure, they're pushed up the
follicle and through the skin's surface as a shaft of hair. Each hair has three
layers: the medulla at the center, which is soft; the cortex, which surrounds the
medulla and is the main part of the hair; and the cuticle, the hard outer layer that
protects the shaft. Hair grows by forming new cells at the base of the root. These
cells multiply to form a rod of tissue in the skin. The rods of cells move upward
through the skin as new cells form beneath them. As they move up, they're cut
off from their supply of nourishment and start to form a hard protein called keratin
in a process called keratinization. As this process occurs, the hair cells die. The
dead cells and keratin form the shaft of the hair.

But since earlier in this chapter, the researchers have tackled about what
their concern would be on hair health, in these succeeding paragraphs, the
researchers will reveal their concern. The main concern of the researchers in this
study is that, as age progresses and a wide variety of medication use or
presence of certain illness a person would be then susceptible hair loss or
alopecia, then what can they do about it. A certain number of hairs are lost, and
some start growing back each day. Some permanent thinning of hair normally
accompanies aging. Hair loss from plaiting excessive back combing and teasing
or the use of hair rollers is usually temporary and the hair returns when the
tension on the hair shaft is halted. Several diseases, particularly those
characterized by prolonged high fevers, may cause baldness. Typhoid fever or
scarlet fever can cause sudden loss of hair from the head or entire body. Gradual
loss of hair may be caused by malnutrition, disorders of the endocrine system,
drug poisoning, and other diseases. Alopecia universalis causes a permanent
and total loss of hair over the entire body including the eyebrows and eyelashes.
The cause of alopecia universalis is unknown. Fungal infections like ringworm,
severe bacterial infections, tuberculosis ulcers, and burns may also result in loss
of hair in affected areas. Early treatment of some infections, particularly
seborrheic dermatitis (chronic inflammation of the skin) that also causes dandruff
may succeed in preventing hair loss from the scalp.

Alopecia, or baldness, is also due principally to hereditary elements.

Certain forms of baldness may, however, be due to other causes: alopecia
prematura, in which the hair of a young person falls out without preliminary
graying, may also be caused by seborrhea; while alopecia, in which the hair falls
out in irregular patches, is believed by doctors to be caused by inflammation,
nerve disorders, or local infections. Diffuse falling of the hair, ordinarily a normal
phenomenon, may reach abnormal proportions after a fever higher than 39.4° C
(103° F), during a debilitating disease, or as a result of invasive surgical
procedures. No nonprescription hair “restorers” actually prevent hair loss or grow
hair. A drug called minoxidil, however, has shown some effectiveness in treating
men and women with hereditary baldness.

But it is not always true that a person can have an easy access to these
items. If the person is incapacitated of acquiring such medications due to
financial incapability, then what would happen to the persons who have baldness
in them and yet still want to have some remedies to alleviate their present
condition. Of course, they still want something for there baldness. So the
researchers have thought of using the sap of the stem of the banana as a
replacement for pharmaceutical measure for the treatment of baldness.

The researchers would like to sought the effectiveness of the sap of the
stem of the banana in alleviating the condition of alopecia associated with scalp
(skin in the head beneath the hair lines) and hair condition. Since the banana
contains tryptophan which is a complex form of amino acid or protein which
similar to the biochemical component of the hair. Some vitamins from the banana
possess functions which render direct significant influence on the condition and
growth cycle of hair. To a number of such vitamins concern vitamins E, A, B12,
B6, B1, PP, H. Functions and influence of these vitamins on hair growth are
necessary for noting in details in a brief hair growth vitamins review. Vitamins PP
and H restore damaged hair's saccule and make an active phase of anagen in a
growth cycle of hair. Besides vitamin H is an irreplaceable component of hair
structure. These vitamins frequently are included in a composition of special hair
growth supplements and hair growth pills. Well, these are just concept; the
researchers then would try to find out the effectiveness of such concept.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK:

The members of the research team believes that the theory of Christi Harris
contains substantial information and will also support the concept of this study.
Christi Harris Hair Theory states that: “If everyone wants beautiful hair silky,
shiny and full of body. The key is balance, hair that has equal amounts of protein
and moisture. These essential elements are stripped from the hair through sun
exposure, chemical processes and heat-styling. Stress, diet, hormonal
fluctuations and the aging process also threaten the natural balance and
condition of the hair.

Healthy hair must be both strong and supple, able to bend without breaking. This
is possible only when the cuticle, the protective outer layer, is smooth, flat and
intact. When the hair strand is damaged, the cuticle is weakened by cracks,
resulting in dry and brittle hair that breaks easily. This condition is a symptom of
protein deficiency, not a lack of moisture.

Since hair consists of 80% protein, it is the only substance that will heal and
repair the strand. Only a plant-based protein with a small enough molecule will
enter the strand, any other type will just sit on the surface, coating the hair. When
the cracks are filled with protein the bond reinforces the strand, restoring
resiliency.

After the damaged hair strand is patched with protein it must be sealed with
moisture. Protein should always be used in combination with moisture. If used
alone, protein can dehydrate the hair, and if you condition with just moisture the
strand will merely become limp. This fusion allows the hair to receive strength
through protein and hydration through moisture...simultaneously, without
sacrificing one for the other. It is important to always treat the cause, not just the
symptoms of hair frustrations”.

With this theory, protein is essential in the repair and building of new hair.
In connection to bananas, bananas carry 1.6 gm of protein that would be
essential for rebuilding and repair for the hair shaft in order reconstruct new
healthy hair. Imagine if that protein goes directly straight to the scalp of the hair
instead of detouring first in the digestive tract and only absorb 15-20 % out of it.
The possibilities and potential of this concept and ideas should be promising.

The concept of this study is also in conjunction with Abraham Maslow’s

Hierarchy of Needs. This concepts states that individuals will go stages of needs
in order achieve self-esteem. There are 5 needs identified by Abraham Maslow.
First is the Physiologic Needs followed by the Safety and Security Needs
followed by Love and Belonging Needs followed by Self-Actualization and
followed lastly by Self-Esteem. In relation of this concept to this study, the
researchers believe that people suffering from alopecia may have lack or still
didn’t achieved the last stage of the hierarchy and that is Self-esteem. Because
of this condition that they themselves don’t want this to come upon them, people
with alopecia may suffer self-esteem. But with the help of the treatment of the
researchers in treating their despised condition, it may help them in achieving a
sense of Self-Esteem.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP

RESPONDENTS WITH TREATMENT EFFECTIVENESS

FOR ALOPECIA OFFERED

INTERVENING VARIABLES:
PROFILE OF THE RESPONDENTS:
 AGE
 GENDER
 MEDICAL STATUS

Figure 1.1 The schematic diagram above shows the experimental group leading to what the researchers would like to find
out on the effectiveness of the treatment. Another intervening variable, which is the profile of the respondents, is used as
a point of comparison for the effectiveness of the said study.
Statement of the Problem

The members of the research team aims to find out the effectiveness of banana sap in

management of alopecia or baldness. The researchers of this study want to seek out

the answers of the following questions;

1. What is the profile of the respondents in the experimental group when group

according to the following terms:

a. Age

b. Gender

2. Is Banana Sap effective in treating Alopecia or Baldness?

Statement of the Hypothesis

The number two in the above mentioned statement of the problem will be subjected for

statistical treatment to wit but the researchers of this study has but one assumption to

establish.

Assumption:

1. Banana Sap can treat alopecia or baldness.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The members of the research team aims to tackle about the effectiveness of the sap
of the stem of a banana in the treatment of alopecia or baldness. With the findings of
this research, the research team believes that it would benefit the institution as listed
below:

1. The Students – the members of the team believe that the findings of this
research would promote awareness about unrealized facts by the students that a
certain plant thought to be with no great importance to the society can help for
the treatment of baldness. A certain remedy that is low cost and easy to acquire
remedy for treating alopecia.
2. Academic Institution – the members of the research team believes that the
institution can benefit from this study through the realization that they can take
part in movements for advancements on this research. The institution also can
take part in social movements appealing for the promotion of this idea in the
society through the use of mass media about the promotional campaign for the
use of herbal remedies as a substitute remedy for pharmaceutical agents.
3. Society – the members of the research team believes that the findings of this
research would benefit the society by the delivery of facts about the effectiveness
of banana for the alleviation for the condition of baldness. A lot of people in the
society do not want to be bald, so with the realization of this project, the
members of this study can help those bald people to achieve regeneration of hair
with a low cost and easy access remedy for alopecia.
4. Researchers – the members of the research team believes that this is a good
opportunity to acquire information if banana would be an effective remedy for
alopecia. This event would give the researchers the opportunity to prove or
disprove their general concepts and ideas regarding this matter.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The members of the research team want to clarify that the concepts and assumption

of this study is only limits in the title, Effectiveness of Banana Sap in Treating Alopecia

or Baldness. In order to prevent a flight of ideas, their should be a scope and limitation

of this research study. The researchers have thought make a limitation on place to a

certain place of locality and a limitation of respondents to be interviewed.

The members of the research team believes that the actual setting of this study

will be conducted limited only within the City of Iligan City only. The area to be covered
will be the whole City of Iligan.the members of the research team believes that the city

of Iligan holds a promising vicinity suitable for testing the people with the condition of

alopecia with banana sap extract since the people in this city are open in accepting new

trends of ideas which can highly benefit them. Thus by realizing that the location is a

potential market for harvesting results of the study, given that the researchers can

promote cooperation with the people in the said area, is a great tool in achieving the

goal of the study.

The members of the research team aims only to operate with the people of Iligan

City having the condition of alopecia or baldness since they are the main target of the

study. The respondents will utilize a number of respondents amounting to twenty (20)

people. The overall respondents will serve as the experimental group which should be

suffering from alopecia and will receive the treatment of the banana sap from the

researchers.

The duration of the experiment will last from 3 – 6 months. Since growing the hair

is quite a long process, the course of therapy will also be prolonged.

But the challenge of acquiring an accurate data, validity and credibility of the

respondents to be experimented and examined should be established. The key points

to remember in accepting respondents will be the following:

 Age – the age of the respondents should be from 35 years old to 60

years old. Since the incidence of individuals below 35 years old

having alopecia is rare thus making the search mush complicated.

And individuals above 60 years old has no more interested of

treating alopecia since in this part of their life, they already consider

alopecia as natural changes of the body associated with aging.

 The patient should not be involve in any other medical therapy –

alopecia is sometimes associated with the use of therapeutic

regimen or therapy such as chemotherapy, as a result, the validity

of the results of this study may become inaccurate and may disrupt

the course of therapy.

 The patient should be negative for any underlying disease – some

diseases such as hair parasitism may affect the course of therapy

rendered by the researchers to the respondents thus making the

results of the study inaccurate and invalid.

 The respondent should not use any other therapy for alopecia – if

the respondent is using another treatment for alopecia, then the

validity of the result of the study will be questionable since it will be

hard to prove if the result occurred as an effect of the treatment of

the researchers or the result of the treatment by the respondent

itself.

Definition of Terms
Terms that are defined in this study are defined on operational basis. They are

defined according to their use during the operations.

Alopecia – hair loss or more common in the world baldness brought about by aging,

hormonal imbalances, malnutrition and stress and etc.

Academic Institution – refers to the academic society which will have a participation in

this study such as the school administration, faculty and staff of the Department of

Nursing and the Iligan City Health Office, which later on the researchers will ask

permission to conduct the study.

Age – the age of the clients should not be lesser from 35 years old and not older than

60 years old.

Medical Status – this refers to the status of the client pertaining to its health. If the

patient is healthy or is having a medical condition. Patients with medical conditions

should be disqualified from the experiment.

Purposive Sampling Design – the sampling design is based on purpose and the

willingness of the respondents to commit on this study.

Researchers – the people who took the initiative and dedication to make this study a

realization.

Sap – these are extracts taken from a specific material.

Society - the sum of social relationships among groups of humans that will participate in

the conduct of this study.

Scalp – the skin in the cephalic region underneath which the hair is growing.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Bananas are the fruit of Musa acuminata. Acuminata means long-pointed or

tapering, not referring to the fruit, but to the flowers giving birth to the fruit. The banana

is mentioned for the first time in history in buddhist texts 600 years BC. Alexander the

Great discovers the taste of the banana in the Indian valleys in 327 BC . The existence

of an organized banana plantation could be found in China back in the year 200 AD. In

650 AD, Islamic conquerors brought the banana back to Palestine. The Arabic

merchants finally spread the bananas all over Africa.

Only in 1502 the Portuguese start the first banana plantation in the Caribbean

and in central America. Portugese sailors brought bananas to Europe from West Africa

in the early fifteenth century. Its Guinean name banema, which became banana in

English, was first found in print in the seventeenth century.

The original banana has been cultivated and used since ancient times, even pre-dating

the cultivation of rice. While the banana thrived in Africa, its origins are said to be of

East Asia and Oceania. The banana was carried by sailors to the Canary Islands and

the West Indies, finally making it to North America with Spanish missionary Friar Tomas

de Berlanga. These historical bananas were not the sweet yellow banana we know

today, but the red and green cooking variety, now usually referred to as plantains to

distinguish them from the sweet type.

The yellow sweet banana is a mutant strain of the cooking banana, discovered in 1836
by Jamaican Jean Francois Poujot, who found one of the banana trees on his plantation

was bearing yellow fruit rather than green or red. Upon tasting the new discovery, he

found it to be sweet in its raw state, without the need for cooking. He quickly began

cultivating this sweet variety.

Soon they were being imported from the Caribbean to New Orleans, Boston, and New

York, and were considered such an exotic treat, they were eaten on a plate using a

knife and fork. Sweet bananas were all the rage at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial

Exposition, selling for a hefty ten cents each.

Related Studies

Based on the information gathered by the researchers, bananas had beenmostly

used as a beauty product since acient egypt, only that they are mixed with honey. The

researchers found related studies containing banana as a remedy for beauty products:

Banana Hair Mask Recipe

A custom recipe was blended for my hair that included the following ingredients:

1 organic (if not available a regular banana will do) ripened banana

2 tablespoons plain organic yogurt

2 teaspoons organic wheat germ oil

1/4 th teaspoon of lecithin

1/8 th teaspoon of organic honey

2 teaspoons of sweetened condensed milk

2-4 drops of ylang ylang essential oil

The ylang ylang essential is used to give a special relaxing and soothing effect.

Not only does this magnificent oil calm emotions and soothe raw nerves, it is

famous as a softening agent for the hair and scalp.

Using a high speed blender the consultant mixed the ingredients until they were

the consistency of a thick fruit drink that had a fabulous sweet aroma. The

consultant told me that she is often tempted to drink the mask mixture for

breakfast.

A detoxifying shampoo was applied to my hair to remove any possible product

build-up. It was followed with a warm rinse and a towel blotting. The thick gooey

yellow mixture was brushed onto my slightly damp hair with a color application

brush that looked like a type of paint brush. The conditioner was applied one inch

from my hair roots down to the very ends of my hair.

Banana & Avocado Facial Mask

My hair was wrapped in a plastic cap and then in a hot towel. While I was waiting

for my "hair to cook" the consultant applied a gentle cleansing facial followed by

a Banana-Avocado Face Mask. Although I was beginning to feel like a complete

banana head, I welcomed the opportunity to try yet another special banana
related beauty recipe.

Since I have mild rosacea of my cheeks I wanted to avoid any treatments that

might aggravate my skin or cause breakouts. Even though the spa also offers a

couple of different fruit juice mask options (apple, papaya & peach) the

consultant suggested the gentle softening properties of a Banana-Avocado

Mask.

The banana/avocado facial recipe included the following ingredients:

1 small organic ripened banana

1 small organic ripened avocado

2 tablespoons plain organic yogurt

2 drops of Vitamin E oil

The banana and avocado were mashed together to form a thick lime green

paste. The yogurt was added. The mixture was massaged onto my newly

cleaned and steamed damp skin. The mask was left on my skin for 10 minutes.

Although this beauty treatment can be left on up to 25 minutes, because of my

sensitive skin, it was decided to minimize my face time.

After the face mask was completely removed and rinsed off, a light moisturizer
that is "rosacea friendly" was applied. My skin felt velvety soft and refreshed. My

rosacea was not disturbed and my skin glowed.

Bananas are not just used for beauty remedies, other researches also proves But that

banana helps in alleviaitng some illnessess. Bananas contain three natural sugars -

sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant,

sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two bananas

provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is

the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.A banana can help overcome or

prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must for our daily

diet. Lucky for the researchers, studies about bananas with regards to alopecia has not

been conducted before. These studies are as follows:

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with

fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research

has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute

workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading

athletes.

A banana can help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and

conditions, making it a must for our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND among people

suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is

because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts
into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make

you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood

glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the

blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low

in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food

and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official

claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped

through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in

a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed

fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore

normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to

laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana

milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the
help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes

and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer

from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood

sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the

affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly

successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work: Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found

pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps.

Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more

likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-

induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on

high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders

because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be

eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity

and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a “cooling” fruit that

can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In

Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born

with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because

they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12

they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the

body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends

oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are

stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These

can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in “The New England Journal of Medicine”,

eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as

much as 40%”

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart,

take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out.

Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it

has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five

times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in

potassium and is one of the best value foods around.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the methodology, respondents profile, data collection

procedure and statistical tool used in the analysis of the data.

Research Design
The members of the research team believes that a quasi-experiment should be

used in this study. A quasi-experiment treats a given situation as an experiment even

though it is not wholly by design. This type of research design allows the researcher to

limit what he or she can say conclusively. This type of research design attempts to

uncover a causal relationship, even though the researcher cannot control all the factors

that might affect the outcome.

The significant element of quasi-experiments is the measure of the experimental

group, which it allows for evaluation. Some data is quite straightforward, but other

measures, such as level of self-confidence in writing ability, increase in creativity or in

reading comprehension are inescapably subjective. In such cases, quasi-

experimentation often involves a number of strategies to compare subjectivity, such as

rating data, testing, surveying, and content analysis.

The course of outcome in this study may be unpredictable because of such

intervening variables. But still the researchers of this study will try to tackle on the title

as much as they can. And as the researchers are using the quasi experimental design,

they are entitled to conclude according to the results of their study.

Sampling Design

The researchers of this study chose the purposive sampling design for selecting

the respondents for this study. The sampling of the respondents is based on the

willingness and availability of the respondents. The overall total of the respondents is

twenty (20). All of the respondents will receive the treatment from the researchers as

being the experimental group. The number of the experimental group makes the ideal

setup to gain accurate data for the data gathering procedure.

Research Instrument

The researchers of this study made a researcher-made checklist wherein this

checklist is used experimental group. With this checklist, the researchers can draw out a

better picture to spot a significant difference of the results of the experimental group for

the purpose of better evaluation. And as of course, the contents of the checklist are the

parameters of the study. The assessment tools used for the evaluation of the

experimental groups prior and during the course of therapy will be the nursing

assessment tool specifically the physical assessment that pertains to the assessment

for the hair. During the assessment process, the researchers will record their finding in

the checklist with the corresponding score designed by the researchers itself. This will

be done in a day to day basis until the intended limit of time for the therapy will end.

Data Gathering Procedure

With the endorsement from the institution of Iligan Medical Center College, the

researchers will ask first permission to conduct data gathering from the office of the

Dean of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide and likewise the members

will request consent from the aforementioned respondents that they may be willing to

participate in the research study voluntarily. Likewise, data collection will be done by the

researchers through the preparation of the said treatment and through the researcher-
made checklist by the researchers as basis for day to day evaluation of the

experimental group which will be reviewed and examined by the research panel

examiners from the concern department before actual treatment process schedule will

be conducted. The data generated on the different respondents on the researcher-made

checklist will be used to evaluate the presence of any significant differences on the

respondents of the experimental group.

In gathering the data, the experimental group will be closely monitored for 3-6

months wherein they will be checked on a day to day basis. Researchers evaluation on

the respondents from day 1 to the last day will be recorded to have and assessment for

signs of progress or no progress at all.

To ensure the validity of the information and to avoid contamination, the

researchers took the initiative of giving the respondents common items during the

course of treatment like common bath towels, same kind of shampoo and common

instructions that should be followed strictly especially the criteria that was mentioned on

the scope and limitation in the chapter 1 of this study. After that, all data are then

gathered and to be prepared for data interpretation and implication and be tested

statistically to draw out a better and concrete result of the study.

Preparation of the Banana Sap:

 Obtain healthy stem of a banana free from any parasitic infestation.

 Wash the stems of the banana in a warm water to ensure cleanliness of

the banana and to avoid extracting its content in an early stage if the

researchers will use hot water.

 Chop the stem of the banana and put it in a grinder to pound the stem for

better and easy access for extract.

 Strain the banana stem, separate the grounded stem from the juice to

obtain the liquid content of the banana as an extract.

 Combine the sap of the banana with coconut oil or honey, the coconut oil

and honey will have an additive effect on the hair and scalp.

Application of Banana Sap

 Wash the hair of the client on a warm water to promote blood circulation

and a cool feeling on scalp to be stimulated.

 Pour the banana sap with coconut oil or honey to the hair and scalp.

 Apply gentle massage while spreading the said solution over the scalp

and hair to promote circulation of the area.

 Let the head be left for about 1 hour to assist in the absorption of the

banana sap and coconut oil in the scalp and roots of the hair.

 Rinse hair with warms water to prevent the solution added on the scalp as

a source for bacterial growth that may affect the course of study.

 Pat dry the hair, comb and style it.

Statistical Treatment

Statistical tool were utilized to interpret and analyze the data gathered. This

includes the frequency, distribution and percentage, mean, median and mode standard

deviation. The ANOVA or Analysis of Variance is used to determine the significant

difference; this means that one approach is more effective than the other. If no

significant difference will surface from the study, that means that there is no alleviation

of the baldness of the respondents and that Banana sap is an ineffective method or
