Electromagnetic Induction and Inductance

1. A conducting circular loop of radius 0.25 m is placed in the 𝑥𝑦-plane in a uniform magnetic field of 0.36 T that points
in the positive 𝑧-direction, the same direction as the normal to the plane.
(a) Calculate the magnetic flux through the loop. [0.0706 Wb]
(b) Suppose the loop is rotated clockwise around the 𝑥-axis, so the normal direction now points at a 45o angle with
respect to the 𝑧-axis. Recalculate the magnetic flux through the loop. [0.0499 Wb]
(c) What is the change in flux due to the rotation of the loop? [-0.0207 Wb]

2. A coil with 25 turns of wire is wrapped on a frame with a square cross section 1.8 cm on a side. Each turn has the
same area, equal to that of the frame, and the total resistance of the coil is 0.35 Ω. An applied uniform magnetic
field is perpendicular to the plane of the coil.
(a) If the field changes uniformly from 0.0 T to 0.5 T in 0.8 s, what is the induced emf in the coil while the field is
changing? [-5.06 x 10-3 V]
(b) Find the magnitude and direction of the induced current in the coil while the field is changing.
[0.0145 A, clockwise]

3. An airplane with a wingspan of 30 m flies due to north at a location where the downward component of Earth’s
magnetic field is 0.6 x 10-4 T. There is also a component pointing due north that has a magnitude of 0.47 x 10-4 T.
(a) Find the difference in potential between the wingtips when the speed of the plane is 250 m/s.
[0.45 V]
(b) Which wingtip is positive? [West]

4. Suppose the magnetic field in a given region in a space is parallel to the Earth’s surface, points north, and has
magnitude 1.8 x 10-4 T. A metal cable attached to a space station stretches radically outwards 2.5 km.
(a) Estimate the potential difference that develops between the ends of the cable if it’s travelling eastward around
Earth at 7700 m/s. [3.47 x 103 V]
(b) Which end of the cable is positive, the lower end or upper end? [upper end]

5. (a) Calculate the inductance of a solenoid containing 300 turns if the length of the solenoid is 25 cm and its cross-
sectional area is 4 x 10-4 m2. [0.181 mH]
(b) Calculate the self induced emf in the solenoid described in part (a) if the current in the solenoid decreases at the
rate of 50 A/s. [9.05 mV]

6. A solenoid is to have an inductance of 0.285 mH, a cross-sectional area or 6 x 10-4 m2, and a length of 36 cm.
(a) How many turns per unit length should it have?
[1020 turns/m]
(b) If the self-induced emf is -12.5 mV at a given time, at what rate is the current changing at that instant?
[43.9 A/s]
