Module 003

Title: Adding it up, Subtracting it down

Relevant SC Standards:

- 1.ATO.6 Demonstrate: addition and subtraction through 20; fluency with addition and
related subtraction facts through 10.

- 1.ATO.8 Determine the missing number in addition and subtraction equations

within 20.

- 1.ATO.5 Recognize how counting relates to addition and subtraction.

Description: This app lesson will help develop first grade/special education students
learn and continue their knowledge on subtracting or adding specific numbers. By the
end of the school year, they should be able to do all the #1-10 perfect with no mistakes
and will have tons of knowledge on the #1-20 equations.

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to use digital content to learn and

practice adding and subtracting numbers. Special education students struggle
sometimes with certain concepts so giving them multiple apps to keep practicing will
really help it stick in their head. Hands on activities will extremely help, so even some
type of activities with blocks or counters will even help. They also work better with more
visual activities so seeing it on their iPad and popping with fun things will make them
want to play. My goal is to make them feel like they are playing a fun game while
learning.

Step 1 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will log on to their clever app that
will be given to them through seesaw on their iPad. Seesaw is a great tool that is like
google classroom, but for elementary kids. Through seesaw they will be given multiple
fun worksheets on adding and subtracting. And then once a week, they will need to log
onto clever, and then do subtracting and adding practice for 20 mins. On seesaw, they
will have to write what activities they completed and when it was done to receive credit.
Practicing on the clever app, will help them learn the common equation and will keep
them accountable.

Step 2 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will then login into the app “Grad 1
Math: Splash Math” that will already be installed on their iPad before given. The app
allows the students to work on subtracting and addition and then they will be getting
reports. They will need to complete or be on that app every Sunday before the weekends,
so that they know where they need improvement on. The parents will be able to see how
they are doing with their reports so that they can also be on top of them. There is easy
subtraction and addition, and then advanced. Every student will start on level 1, and if
they show me that they completed the levels, each time they will get a little something. It
is important to keep showing them that you are proud of them so that they do not feel
discouraged. I will be checking that app every 2 weeks, to make sure that they are
staying and participating. If they are not moving forward, their participation grade in
the class will be going down.

Step 3 Creation-Based (Learning Artifact) or Skill-Based App (Screenshot of

Progress): Students will make a video on IMOVIE of them doing specific math
problems that are given to them as their test grade. For example, I will give them 5
addition and 5 subtraction problems at the end of every two weeks. The student will
have to take materials around their house to explain how they are going to solve the
problem and what the answers are. They will then be graded on if the answer is correct
and then how they are explaining it. I want the students to be creative and really think
deeply about objects they can use or their method of how they find the answer. For
example, if I give them a question 5 + 5, I want them to get 5 objects and then 5 objects
and then add them together to get the answer of 10. I want them to make a video of their
thinking skills and what methods they used to complete the answers.
