‘Gringos’ begin service work in Mexico EDITORIAL

By MARGARET THOMPSON

Before last Wednesday, I had only

seen neighborhoods like Mérida’s
Emiliano Zapata Sur in books, in
movies, on television, and through the
bus window. I wasn’t sure what to expect
when my group members and I stepped
off the bus in front of Marista University
on the south side of the city, where we
would be taking our service-learning
course and volunteering with the local
residents.
I had to dodge a decomposing cat
in the gutter before stepping onto
the sidewalk (not the greatest initial
observation, but hey… dead cats aren’t
exclusive to the developing world).
We began our assigned neighborhood
promenade hesitantly, feeling more like
a conspicuous imposition than a group of
humble college students.
There was an eerie silence in the
streets, and the smell of incinerated
garbage hung in the air – there is very
limited trash collection in Emiliano

outside.
As we walked beside a row of Photo by Rachel Metea

5 ATLANTA — Federal authorities are

highlighting Atlanta's emergence as a hub
in human trafficking along the East Coast as
they try to raise awareness about the problem
and generate tips from the public.
Brock Nicholson of U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement for Georgia and the
Carolinas says human trafficking has been
increasing in the Atlanta area and the crimes
are often hard to uncover because many victims
won't come forward.
Nicholson said victims often fear beatings
from traffickers or arrest and deportation by
authorities if they try to escape. He stressed
that authorities will not punish or deport victims.
Nicholson said two troubling new trends are
that victims are getting younger, some as young
as 14, and traffickers are increasingly using
violence to control victims.
