What This Module is About

Have you encountered a situation wherein you have to retell a movie to your friends
in a concise way?
For instance, you have watched a movie and your friends ask you to retell to them
the movie you have watched but you don’t have the luxury of time in retelling the whole
movie to them, How then will you tell them the whole movie? Summarizing of the content of
the material viewed is one of the ways to relay the movie or any material viewed.
This module is about summarizing of the content of the material viewed. You will
learn the easy way of summarizing.
This module has only one lesson:
Lesson 1 – Summarizing of the content of material viewed

What I Need to Know

In this, you’ll establish further understanding of this lesson. Primarily, these activities
will improve yourself in engaging also at how you will be seeing at the other side and
functions yourself in making for what’s next. In every task, this explains you to show
appreciation in your skills in summarizing and retelling information contained in the material
viewed in a concise way.

Optimistically, the activities are organized for you as a tool on how you will be able to
accomplish the objective in this module. This time, you are about to know the importance of
summarizing the information contained from the material viewed.

With this process, you are expected to:


1. summarize the information contained from material viewed; and
2. retell the information containedfrom the material viewed using your own
words.

Let us deepen your understanding of the lesson presented in this module. Study the

Summarizing: A Definition

A summary is a shortened version of written or viewed material that presents the


central ideas and key points expressed in a piece of writing.

However, summarizing the material viewed can be a different and can presented
using the following questions below.

 How do we summarize a material viewed?

In summarizing the information contained from the material viewed the following
questions should be considered.

1. Who – Who is the story talking about?


2. What – What is the main action happening?
3. Where – Where is the event happening?
4. When – When is the event happening?
5. How – How is the event happening?

Example 1: Short Film “Miss Brill”

Summary of Miss Brill

"One Sunday Miss Brill puts on her fur and goes to the Public Gardens as usual. The
evening ends with her sudden realization that she is old and lonely, a realization brought to
her by a conversation she overhears between a boy and a girl presumably lovers, who
comment on her unwelcome presence in their vicinity. Miss Brill is sad and depressed as
she returns home, not stopping by as usual to buy her Sunday delicacy, a slice of honey-
cake. She retires to her dark room, puts the fur back into the box and imagines that she has
heard something cry."

 Below are the answers and explanations of the questions.

 Who is the story talking about? It is the main character in the material viewed.

Answer: Miss Brill.

 What is the main action happening? It is the happening that takes place in the
story that greatly change the life of the characters.

Answer: A realization brought to her by a conversation she


overhears between a boy and a girl presumably lovers, who
comment on her unwelcome presence in their vicinity.

 Where is the film happening? It is the place that the main place in the material
viewed.
Answer: Public garden
 When is the event happening? It is the time of the main event in the material
viewed.
Answer: One Sunday
 How is the event happening? It is the manner of how the event takes place.

Summary
Summarizing the information contained in the material viewed is quite difficult for the students
in Junior high school but with the help of this module they will be able to have an easy way of
understanding and summarizing on their own.
In summarizing the information contained from the material viewed the following questions
should be considered.

1. Who – Who is the story talking about?


2. What – What is the main action happening?
3. Where – Where is the event happening?
4. When – When is the event happening?
5. How – How is the event happening?
Finally, the module asks the students to state his/her reflection on the last task
provide.
