SECTION I - General Information

1.1 INTRODUCTION

This manual provides information about the electrical, mechanical, and physical characteristics of the FreeFlight 2101 I/O
Approach Plus GPS Receiver Display Unit P/N 81440-XX. The first section serves as an introduction. It describes the technical
specifications of the Dzus-mounted Receiver/Display unit, and the externally mounted GPS antenna. The following sections
describe the installation and checkout procedures. Proper techniques must be followed to ensure correct operation.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT

The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus Receiver provides long-range GPS navigation via a Dzus-mounted unit. Each system
comprises receivers and antennas to perform specified functions. The Jeppesen database cards provide up-to-date
information about airports and other navigation aids around the world. The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS System
comprises one Dzus-mounted Receiver/Display Unit (RDU) containing a GPS Receiver (12-channel), one GPS Antenna/
Preamp, and applicable installation hardware (see Section 1.4.2 for the appropriate part numbers). The Jeppesen database
cards are available separately. The part numbers are P/N 81461-10 for North American information, P/N 81461-12 for
Eurasian information, and P/N 81461-13 for Pacific/South American information. The first card is supplied by FreeFlight.

CAUTION
Use of the GPS antenna for IFR installations in aircraft equipped with satellite communication equipment should be
tested to ensure no interference exists between the SATCOM equipment and the GPS antenna.

1.2.1 Receiver/Display Unit

The Receiver/Display Unit (RDU) is the main component of the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus navigation
system. The RDU consists of the GPS Receiver, the User Interface, and the System Interface.

1.2.1.1 GPS Receiver

The GPS Receiver interprets the satellite transmissions to determine the current position. This information is
communicated to the pilot via the User Interface and to the connected equipment via the System Interface.

1.2.1.2 User Interface

The User Interface is accomplished by an LED Display, five annunciator lights, nine push-button keys, two
concentric selector knobs, a power switch, and a NavData card slot.

A. LED Display

The Light Emitting Diode (LED) Display is a two-line, high intensity display with 20 characters per line.
System information is shown on the display.

B. Annunciator Lights

The internal annunciator lights alert the pilot of warning and advisory messages. The annunciator
lights are the Message (MSG), Hold (HLD), Parallel Track (PTK), Approach (APR), and Waypoint Alert
(WPT).

C. Push-Button Keys

Nine push-button keys are used for mode selection and data entry. The keys are described as follows:

Access Navigation Mode. Displays enroute navigation information.

Access Waypoint Mode. Allows pilot to view or select airports, SIDs, STARs, Approaches,
VORs, NDBs, Intersections, and User-defined locations as waypoints in a flight plan or
as a destination. Also allows pilot to create, edit, or delete User-defined waypoints.

Access Flight Plan Mode. Allows pilot to create, use, edit, reverse, and delete flight
plans.

Access Calculator Mode. Allows pilot to perform many common E6B computer
calculations.

Access Auxiliary Mode. Provides information about system status, sensor status,
system setup and installation procedures. Also contains a programmable checklist
function.

F. NavData Card Slot

The NavData card slot accepts the Jeppesen NavData card which provides the pilot information on
Airports, SIDs, STARs, Approaches, VORs, NDBs, and Intersections.

1.2.1.3 System Interface

The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus communicates with connected equipment by the CDI outputs,
Annunciators, the Serial Inputs/Outputs, and the Digital Inputs/Outputs.

A. CDI Outputs

The RDU provides standard Course Deviation Indicator (CDI) output signals suitable for use by most
CDIs.

B. Annunciator Outputs

The external annunciator lights alert the pilot of warning and advisory messages. The annunciator
lights are Message (MSG), Hold (HLD), Waypoint Alert (WPT) and Approach (APR).

C. Serial Inputs/Outputs

The RDU provides two serial input ports and two serial output ports for general use. Data formats are
software selectable.

D. Digital Inputs/Outputs

The RDU provides four two-wire digital input ports, three two-wire digital output ports and one six-wire
digital output port. Data formats are all software selectable.

1.2.2 GPS Antenna

The GPS Antenna (P/N 81194) receives and amplifies GPS Signals. The GPS Antenna unit is an omnidirectional
flat microstrip antenna with an integral preamplifier and is rated to 1300 knots IAS. An alternate antenna
(P/N 16248-11) can be used with the FreeFlight 2101 I/O APPROACH Plus in installations without Satcom. Antenna

SECTION II - Installation

2.1 GENERAL

This section provides general information for installing the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS Navigation System. The
cables will be fabricated by the installation agency to fit these various requirements. This section contains interconnect
diagrams, mounting dimensions and information pertaining to installation.

2.2 UNPACKING AND INSPECTING EQUIPMENT

2.2.1 Physical Inspection

Unpack the equipment carefully and inspect each item for evidence of damage incurred during shipment. If a damage
claim must be filed, save the shipping container and all packing materials to substantiate your claim. The claim should
be properly filed with the transportation company. The shipping container should be saved in the event that storage
or reshipment of the equipment should become necessary.

2.2.2 Electrical Inspection

Each new FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus is tested and adjusted during final inspection at FreeFlight before
shipment. Normally, unless damage is evident, it is not necessary to do a pre-installation electrical inspection.

2.3 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

2.3.1 Cooling Considerations

The greatest single contributor to increased reliability of avionics is to limit the maximum operating temperature of
the individual units, whether DZUS or remote mounted. While circuit designs today consume far less electrical
energy, the watts per cubic inch dissipated within avionics units still remains much the same due to high density
packaging techniques. Consequently, the importance of providing avionics cooling is essential to the life span of the
unit.

While each individual unit may or may not require forced air cooling, the combined heat load of several units operating
in a typical avionics location will significantly degrade the reliability of avionics if provisions for cooling are not
incorporated in the initial installation. Failure to provide cooling will certainly lead to increased avionics maintenance
costs and may void the FreeFlight Navigation Warranty.

Driving Synchro loads generates significant additional heat inside the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus. While
forced air cooling is always a good consideration, it is strongly recommended that forced air cooling be installed
whenever Synchro or Roll Steering outputs are used. To facilitate forced air cooling of the FreeFlight 2101 I/O
Approach Plus, an Air Duct attachment kit P/N 81515-00 is available from FreeFlight. This kit, which includes an
Air Duct P/N 81515, Airway Tube P/N 14426, Retainer Ring P/N 16168 and two screws P/N 80448, attaches to the
rear of the unit and has a fitting for a 5/8" ID air hose (see Figure 2-6). Provide at least 2 CFM of air to the air hose.

2.3.2 Harness and Cable Fabrication

The installation agency must supply and fabricate all external cables. The length and routing of external cables must
be carefully studied and planned before proceeding with the installation of the equipment. Avoid sharp bends or
routing the cable too close to aircraft control cables and power sources. When necessary to cross power cables, use
extra-braided shielding and cross at right angles. Take special precaution when transitioning pressure envelopes.
Use cable to connector sealant. Figures 2-1 and 2-2 are the pin-out diagrams and Figure 2-11 is a typical system
interconnection. In addition to the standard aircraft tools, the following special tools are required:

A. Positioner tool P/N M22520/2-06 or equivalent.

B. Crimp tool P/N M22520/2-01 or equivalent.

2.3.3 GPS Antenna Installation

The GPS antenna, the antenna gasket (-21kit only) and two 90° TNC connectors are provided in the installation kit.
Straight TNC connectors are also available from FreeFlight. Proper antenna installation is critical to both the
performance of the system and the aircraft's structural integrity.

CAUTION
Use of the GPS antenna (P/N 81194) for IFR installations in aircraft equipped with satellite communication
equipment should be tested to ensure no interference exists between the SATCOM equipment and the GPS
antenna.

2.3.3.1 Location

In order to receive transmissions from GPS satellites, the GPS antenna must be in line-of-sight. Therefore, the
most important factor in GPS antenna installation is determining which location on the fuselage affords the least
amount of airframe blockage. Always mount antenna on the top of the fuselage, never on the underside. Also,
mount the antenna so that the mounting holes are perpendicular to the line of flight. Select a mounting location
at least three (3) feet away from any transmitting antenna.

On fixed wing aircraft, the best mounting location is usually above the cabin, near the front and as close to the
center line as possible.

2.3.3.2 Location Considerations on Rotorcraft

As in fixed wing aircraft, the primary factor in rotorcraft GPS antenna site selection is to minimize airframe
blockage. Two other guidelines to be considered in placing the antenna on rotorcraft are listed in order of
importance below:

A. Install as far from the main rotor hub as possible. At a given RPM, the linear velocity of the blade
increases as the distance from the rotor hub increases. Since the blade blocks the line-of-sight GPS
satellite signal, the effect will be reduced further away from the rotor hub.

B. If under the blade, get as far below the blade as possible to minimize signal distortions from the blade
edges, which decrease as the distance from the blade increases.

2.3.3.3 Wiring

The installation agency is responsible for the fabrication of the cable to the specifications outlined in Section 1.5.2
of this document. Take care when routing the cable to avoid kinking and sharp bends. If the antenna cable is
routed through bulkheads, be sure to install protective material to avoid chafing. Figure 2-3 illustrates a proper
cable termination.

2.3.3.4 Installation

CAUTION
Before drilling aircraft fuselage and/or mounting adapter holes to receive the GPS Antenna, make certain
the hole pattern for the antenna is oriented with respect to its forward direction.

2.3.3.4.1 16248-11 Antenna

After a suitable mounting location is identified, position and affix the adhesive-backed mounting template
supplied with the antenna. The mounting holes may be drilled through the template at 0.22 inch through or
threaded at 10-32 UNF 2-B, refer to Figure 2-5. The connector hole is 1.25 inch diameter. Be sure to remove
the mounting template prior to installing the antenna.

• Fastening to Fuselage (for 16248-11 antenna)

CAUTION
Do not tighten screws with more than 20 inch-pounds of torque. Damage to antenna will result and void
warranty. Torque value = 18 ±2 inch-pounds.

Install screws through antenna, gasket, and aircraft skin into captive nut plates. Tighten the screws to 18 ±2 inch-
pounds of torque. Use non-corrosive RTV or similar sealant to seal around antenna base and screw holes.

2.3.3.4.2 81194 Antenna

• Fastening to Fuselage (for 81194 antenna)

The mounting holes may be drilled at .22 inch through or threaded at 10-32 UNS-2B. The connector hole is 1.25
inch diameter. Refer to Figure 2-4.

• Shim Fabrication for Curved Surfaces

The GPS antenna is designed for mounting on a flat surface and must not be warped due to mounting surface
curvature. To fit a curved fuselage, fabricate a shim or an adapter plate to fit the antenna. Use aluminum (7075
T6) or phenolic material to manufacture the shim.

Aluminum shims can be riveted to the aircraft. To seal the aluminum shim to the aircraft, use Product Research
polysulfide adhesive PR 1221 or equivalent.

Phenolic material shims can also be used. In this case apply Dow Corning Q3-6093 around the circumference
of the shim/aircraft seam.

CAUTION
Do not tighten screws with more than 28 inch-pounds of torque. Damage to antenna will result and void
warranty.

Install screws through antenna and aircraft skin into captive nut plates. Tighten the screws to 26 ±2 inch-pounds
of torque.

2.3.4 Receiver/Display Unit Installation

2.3.4.1 Unit Installation

Select a mounting location that will allow easy viewing of the unit's display during normal instrument panel scan
and allow easy access to the front panel controls. After the desired mounting location is identified, refer to Figure
2-6 for unit outline and mounting dimensions. Relocate existing equipment as necessary.

2.3.4.2 Placard Use

Placard use is dictated by the particular installation. The installation agency is required to fabricate a
placard to label the annunciators, transfer switches, and circuit breakers.

2.3.4.3 J1 Wiring Notes

The external wire supplied by the installing agency should be MIL-W-16878E/4 or equivalent 22 gauge with the
exception of the serial communication connections (pins 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 18, 23, 24, 29, 35, 36, and 37). Serial
communication connections require 22 gauge twisted shielded pairs. Refer to pin-out diagram Figure 2-1. For
CDI/HSI Interconnections, refer to Figure 2-10. For Serial Port Interconnections, refer to Figures 2-12 through
2-14.

These considerations should be followed to ensure proper interface.

A. Audio output (pin 13). Audio Common (pin 32) is common for AURAL ALERT. For KMA20 Audio panels,
install a 620Ω ±10%, 1/4W resistor in series with the audio output. Refer to Figure 2-11.

B. The Message annunciator (MSG), pin 14, Hold annunciator (HLD), pin 15, Waypoint Alert annunciator
(WPT), pin 28, and Approach annunciator (APR), pin 30 duplicate the annunciators on the front panel.
These pins are connected to open-collector transistors which will sink a maximum of 200 mA. If they are
connected to a relay for higher current capability, the relay must have a protection diode placed across
the coil. The pins sink current when the annunciator condition is true.

C. Serial Port 1 (pins 5, 7, 8, and 37) and Serial Port 2 (pins 9, 23, 24, and 36) are designed for signals
adhering to the RS-422 standard. Direct RS-232 output is available via the Bipolar ports, see D.

D. Bipolar Serial Port 1 (pin 6) and Serial Port 2 (pin 10) are single-ended RS232 signals . This signal must
be the same format as the corresponding serial output port (e.g., if Serial Output Port 1 is configured for
K0 at 9600 baud, so will Bipolar Output Port 1).

E. Serial Port 3 (pins 2, 4, 18, 29, and 35) is reserved for Differential GPS (DGPS) operations. Do not use
these communication ports for peripheral interface operations.

F. Only a single device may be connected to each serial input port (RXD1 and RXD2). Up to 5 devices may
be connected in parallel to each serial output port (TXD1 and TXD2), provided that all devices in parallel
use the same message format and data rate (e.g., K0 at 9600 baud).

G. The ONE PPS (pin 12) is a TTL pulse occurring once per second. When GPS time is available, the leading
edge of ONE PPS is synchronized to GPS time within 1 ms.

H. Pin 26 is a 14 Vdc or 28 Vdc Superflag driver.

CAUTION:
Do not connect pin 26 directly to GND.

FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS Navigation System

2.3.4.4 J2 Wiring Notes

The external wire supplied by the installing agency should be MIL-W-16878E/4 or equivalent, 22 gauge with
the exception of the digital data connections (pins 9, 15, 16, 23, and 57 - 64). Digital data connections require
22 gauge twisted shielded pairs. Refer to pin-out diagram Figure 2-2. For HSI connections, refer to Figure 2-10.
For an overall typical system interconnection, refer to Figure 2-11.

These considerations should be followed to ensure proper connection:

A. The Approach Mode (APPRMODE, pin 26), Approach Enable (APPREN, pin 27), and Leg Change
(LEG CHNG, pin 28) annunciators are connected to open-collector transistors which will sink up to 200
mA max. If connected to a relay for higher current capability, the relay must have a protection diode placed
across the coil. The pins sink current when the annunciator condition is true.

B. The HSI Synchro Valid Flag (HSI VALID, pin 29) and Steering Valid Flag (STR VALID, pin 48), are
connected to transistor switches to aircraft voltage. They can source current up to 200 mA max. If
connected to a relay for higher current capability, the relay must have a protection diode placed across
the coil. The pins will source current when the flag condition is true.

C. When using high speed ARINC 429 communications with connections in excess of 10 feet and with
multiple receivers on a single line, additional attention may be required to maximize signal integrity. The
wires should be connected in a daisy-chain from the transmitter to one receiver, then from that receiver
to the next receiver, etc., not as a branching or star arrangement with parallel legs.

D. Pin 39 should be used as a ground reference for low level, low current signals such as A/PLeft/Right
Deviation, pin 50) and the 6 wire output (pins 32, 47 and 49). Pin 41 should be used as a ground return
for high current signals such as Synchro 1, 2 and 3 line Z and Roll Steering common. Connecting any
Synchro Z lines, Roll Steering common, or any reference common to the same pin as the Left/Right return
will cause erroneous Left/Right data to be displayed.

E. In input synchro configurations, ground input synchro "Z" lines to airframe ground per ARINC 407.

F. "Future Use" wiring options may be pre-wired by the installation agency, but will remain inactive until future
software upgrades are available.

SECTION III - Checkout

3.1 GENERAL

This section contains installation checkout, system configuration, and basic operating procedures. More detailed operating
procedures are contained in the Pilot Guide.

3.1.1 Continued Airworthiness Requirements

The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus requires no periodic maintenance or calibration. Maintenance is performed
on an on-condition basis only. The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus is continually tested using Built-In Test
Equipment (BITE) when the system is in operation. This method of testing will notify the operator of a failure. System
software updates are accomplished using the card slot on the front of the unit and instructions described in normal
Service Bulletin notification.

3.2 SYSTEM CHECKOUT

3.2.1 Preliminary Test

Before the unit is installed and tested, verify installation accuracy. With the unit removed, turn on the power and verify
the following:

1. Verify that Aircraft DC bus voltage is present on pins 16 and 17 of P1 and pins 65 and 66 of P2. Also, if external
annunciators are installed, verify that voltage is present on pins 14, 15, 28, and 30 of P1 and pins 26, 27, and
of P2.

2. Verify that ground is present on pins 3 and 20 of P1 and pins 33 and 34 of P2, and that pin 26 of P1 is not grounded.

3. Verify that the GPS antenna coax center conductor is not shorted to its shield or aircraft ground.

When the above conditions are verified, turn off the master power. Properly attach the external connectors. Slide
the unit into the panel and tighten the DZUS locking devices. Turn on the unit. During initialization, the unit performs
a comprehensive diagnostics routine. A failure of any system component is annunciated by a flashing "Fail" message
adjacent to the relevant category. This failure will cause the Message (MSG) annunciator to light and remain lit.
Consult the Pilot Guide for more information concerning FAIL messages.

3.2.2 Installation Setup

The following characteristics are configured during installation:

• Serial Port Configuration • GPS Antenna Height

• Aux I/O Configuration • OAT K Factor
• Audio Level • TKE Graphic
• CDI Sensitivity • Display Intensity
• User Units • Magnetic Variation
• Advisory Messages

When installation is complete, these settings should be recorded on the configuration record sheet at the end of this
section. Any time the configuration is changed, the changes should be noted on the configuration record sheet.

3.2.4.3 Comm Test

Harmonic interference from VHF transmissions on the following frequencies may affect GPS signal reception:

Frequency in MHz
121.150 131.250
121.175 131.275
121.200 131.300

Installations intended for IFR approvals should be tested to ensure no interference is generated by VHF
transmissions.

For each interfering frequency, perform the following test:

1. Tune the VHF radio to the frequency under test.

2. While observing the GPS satellites tracked display and internal GPS annunciator, key the VHF transmitter
for 20 seconds.
3. If the number of satellites in use drops to the point that GPS navigation is no longer possible, then too much
interference exists between VHF radio and the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus.
Two common sources of interference are from the VHF radio front panel to the GPS antenna and from the
VHF antenna to the GPS antenna.
To minimize front panel to antenna interference, ensure that all cabin doors and windows are closed when
performing the test. This type of interference is also minimized by being away from the ground and ground
structures. If required, the test may be performed in flight. Finally, the location of the GPS antenna may
affect levels of VHF front panel to GPS antenna interference.
For VHF antenna to GPS antenna interference, a filter may be inserted in line with the VHF transmission
line.
The following filters are recommended:

SPECIFICATIONS FOR LOW PASS FILTER

I.L. = 0.4 dB max. @ 140 MHz
3 dB cutoff = 539 MHz nominal

APPENDIX B - Serial Interface Specification

B.1 INTRODUCTION

Serial communication capabilities for the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus are provided by two bi-directional serial
communication ports compatible with EIA RS-232 and RS-422 protocols. Different formats may be selected on each port
providing the user flexibility in interfacing various systems with the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus.

All information contained in this section is subject to change without notice.

B.2 BASIC COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL DESCRIPTIONS

B.2.1 RS-422
The RS-422 protocol uses differential signals with a magnitude in the range of 2-6 volts and a polarity as follows:

Logic 1: The non-inverting (+) signal is negative with respect to the inverting (-) signal (Signal Condition = MARK).

Logic 0: The non-inverting (+) signal is positive with respect to the inverting (-) signal (Signal Condition = SPACE).

RS-422 has the capability of driving up to ten receive devices in parallel from a single transmitter. It can drive long
cable lengths and has superior noise immunity.

B.2.2 RS-232
The RS-232 protocol specifies a bipolar, unbalanced signal referenced to a common ground (serial common). For
example, for RS-232D, the polarity is as follows:

Logic 1: The transmitter voltage is between -5V and -15V (Signal Condition = MARK).

Logic 0: The transmitter voltage is between +5V and +15V (Signal Condition = SPACE).

B.2.3 RS-423
The RS-423 protocol specifies a bipolar, unbalanced signal referenced only to the transmitter's ground and is
received differentially. The polarity is as follows:

Logic 1: The transmitter voltage is -4V to -6V (Signal Condition = MARK).

Logic 0: The transmitter voltage is +4V to +6V (Signal Condition = SPACE).

B.5.4 Air Data Computer Format

The Air Data computer transmits once per second using the following parameters:

Baud: 9600
Parity: None
Start Bit: 1
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bit: 1
Update Rate: 1 msg/sec

Air Data messages are accepted when the serial port is set to "ENCODER". A packet consists of a set of ASCII
message strings. The first character of each packet is an ASCII Start-of-Text (STX = 02H). The last character of each
packet will be an ASCII End-of-Text (ETX = 03H).

Each message string begins with one ASCII character to identify it as an Air Data message ("Z"). The second
character identifies which message it is. The rest of the string consists of one or more alphanumeric ASCII fields.
Each message field ends with a carriage return, line feed (CR = 0D0AH). All numeric fields are ASCII decimal, right
justified and zero filled. If the Air Data Computer cannot supply data in a particular field, the field is filled with dashes
("-" = 2DH). The table on the next page lists the valid message strings.

B.6 TRANSMIT PORTS

B.6.1 Configuration
Transmit Ports 1 and 2 (TXD1 and TXD2) provide interface capability with a variety of peripheral devices such as
moving maps and fuel flow computers, as well as providing data to users for custom applications. Adapters are
available for each port to provide RS-422 and/or RS-232 signals. No hand-shaking lines are provided.

Six data formats are available for use and may be selected in the INSTALL submode of the AUX mode (See Section
B.4). These formats are RNAV 0 and 1 (R0 and R1), King 0 and 1 (K0 and K1), and Extended King 0 and 1 (X0 and
X1). Formats R0 and R1 may be set to any baud rate (from 1200 baud to 38.4 kbaud, excepting 19.2 kbaud) while
formats K0, K1, X0, and X1 may only be set to 9600 baud or 38.4 kbaud. The update rate may be set from 1 to 999
seconds for any of the formats. The only exception is if the baud rate is 1200. For this case, the maximum update
rate is 2 seconds.

The data stream is a string of ten-bit serial ASCII characters consisting of one start bit, eight data bits, and one stop
bit. No parity is generated.

Data messages begin with an ASCII Start of Text (STX) character and end with an End of Text (ETX) character. A
single alphabetic character precedes each data element.

The data output format is as follows: <STX><id><dddd><it><id><dddd><it>....<id><dddd><it><ETX>

Where: STX = ASCII Start of Text Character

id = Item Designator (Single Alphabetic Character)
dddd = Item Data
it = Item Terminator: (CR) or (CR)(LF)
ETX = ASCII End-of-Text Character

B.6.2 R0 and R1 Data Formats

Data output is identical for both formats with the exception of the end of line codes. R0 is output with a carriage return
(CR) denoting the end of the line. R1 is output with both a carriage return (CR) and a line feed (LF) at the end of a
line.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A. GENERAL

The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS Navigation System will provide position accuracies
commensurate with selective availability, provided that the system is receiving adequate satellite
signals. The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus has demonstrated that it is capable of and has
met the accuracy requirements of:

1. VFR/IFR domestic en route, terminal and non-precision instrument approach

operation within the U.S. National Airspace System using WGS-84 (NAD 83)
chart references in accordance with the criteria of Class A1, TSO C-129,
Airborne Supplemental Navigation Equipment Using the Global Positioning
System (GPS).

2. VFR/IFR domestic enroute, terminal and non-precision approach (GPS, Loran-

C, VOR, VOR-DME, TACAN, NDB, NDB-DME, RNAV) operation approval
within the U.S. National Airspace System and all latitudes bounded by 90°
North and 90° South using WGS-84 (NAD 83) chart references in accordance
with the criteria of FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-138 and AC 91-49.
Navigation data is based upon use of only the global positioning System (GPS)
operated by the United States.

B. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS Navigation System is a Global Positioning Satellite
(GPS) based navigation system, consisting of a Receiver/Display Unit (RDU) and a GPS
antenna. The RDU is located in the center of the instrument panel and the antenna is located on
top of the fuselage at station 163.2. The system is designed to provide the pilot with navigation
and position information from received GPS satellite signals and operate under IFR procedures
for en route and terminal operations. Flight plans, including SIDs and STARs are entered into
the RDU as a number of waypoints to be flown. Navigation information is displayed on the
Captain’s Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) when selected. Roll steering data is also coupled
to the Autopilot when selected and in the HDG mode. An air data computer provides pressure
altitude, true airspeed, and outside air temperature information to the Trimble 2101 I/O
Approach Plus. Annunciators mounted on the pilots instrument panel repeat MSG, WPT, HLD
and APR to provide status/failure/integrity data to the pilot.

SECTION IV - LIMITATIONS

A. The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus GPS Navigation System Pilot Guide, p/n 82881,
Revision C (or later appropriate revision), must be immediately available to the flight
crew whenever navigation is predicated on the use of the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach
Plus.

B. The FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus Navigation System must have software version -
0241A (or later FAA approved revision) installed.

C. IFR en route and terminal navigation is prohibited unless the pilot verifies the currency of
the data base or verifies each selected waypoint for accuracy by reference to current
approved data.

NOTE:

Many of the waypoints identified in the Jeppesen NavData database and used
by the 2101 I/O Approach Plus to fly the approach may be unnamed in the
published Terminal Procedures. These included waypoints such as the
intersection of two radials, DME positions, waypoints located on a DME
Arc, turn waypoints, or waypoints to indicate a Final Approach Fix (FAF).
The pilot should review the approach legs and cross check the appropriate
publication to ensure the procedure is flown correctly.

D. Instrument approaches must be accomplished in accordance with approved instrument

approach procedures that are retrieved from the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus data
base. The system must incorporate the current data base update cycle.

1. Instrument approaches must be conducted in the approach mode and RAIM must
be available at the Final Approach Fix..

2. Accomplishment of ILS, LOC, LOC-BC, LDA, SDF, and MLS approaches using
GPS are not authorized.

3. When an alternate airport is required by the applicable operating rules, it must be

served by an approach based on other than GPS or Loran-C navigation, the
aircraft must have operational equipment capable of using that navigation aid, and
the required navigation aid must be operational.

4. APR mode must be annunciated at the Final Approach Fix,

E. The aircraft must have other approved navigation equipment installed and operating
appropriate to the route of flight.

SECTION V - NORMAL PROCEDURES

A. OPERATION

1. Normal operating procedures are outlined in the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach
Plus GPS Navigation System Pilot Guide, P.N. 82881, Revision C (or later
appropriate revision).
CAUTION:

When executing terminal area procedures (SIDs, STARs, and

Approaches), the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus database will
contain all the waypoints associated with those procedures, but not
necessarily all the legs. For example, a missed approach procedure
may require the pilot to fly runway heading to 3000 feet, then turn left
to intercept an inbound course to the Missed Approach Holding Point
(MAHP). For this procedure, the navigator will have only the
identifier and coordinates of the MAHP, not the procedures for
arriving at it. The pilot should always consult the appropriate
publication to ensure the procedure is flown correctly.

2. A Shadin ADC-200 supplies pressure altitude, true airspeed, and outside air
temperature data to the FreeFlight2101 I/O Approach Plus. There are no
controls or special operating procedures for use of the ADC-200 system. This air
data information is displayed on the Air Data pages located under the CALC
key.

B. SYSTEM ANNUNCIATORS

Eight annunciators, located on the Captain’s and First Officer’s instrument panel are used to
annunciate the following conditions:

1. GPS (Green) (On the NAV/GPS annunciator) This annunciator lights when
the navigation selector switch is in the GPS position to indicate that navigation
data displayed on the HSI is from the FreeFlight 2101 I/O Approach Plus
System.

2. NAV (White) (On the NAV/GPS annunciator) This annunciator lights when the
navigation selector switch is in the NAV position to indicate that Navigation
data displayed on the HSI is from the VHF NAV system.

3. MSG (Amber) This annunciator lights whenever the MSG annunciator lights
on the RDU, and alerts the pilot that a message is waiting in the message queue.
Displayed messages relate to the accuracy of the position shown or to possible
problems with the Navigation System. The MSG annunciator will flash until the

MSG key is pressed repeatedly to view all new messages. Messages remaining
in the queue after being read will be indicated by a steady MSG annunciator.

4. WPT (Amber) This annunciator will light whenever waypoint arrival is

imminent. The WPT light will illuminate with the lead time set in AUX,
CONFIGURE mode. For intermediate waypoints within a flight plan, the WPT
light will extinguish when the track change is complete. For a single/last
waypoint flight plan the WPT light will extinguish beyond the waypoint at the
time set in AUX, CONFIGURE mode.

5. HLD (Green) The HLD annunciator illuminates to alert the pilot that the
active flight plan is currently in hold (plan suspended at the current active TO
waypoint). The HLD mode can be manually selected by the pilot or will
automatically function in the approach operation. The HLD mode operation can
only be released by the pilot.

6. APR (Green) The approach annunciator alerts the pilot that the approach
mode is active (approach RAIM is available), the aircraft is located on the final
approach leg (annunciator illuminates at 2 NM inbound to the Final Approach
Fix (FAF)), and the aircraft track is within 70 degrees of the inbound course.

Two annunciators, located below the 2101 I/O Approach Plus RDU on the center instrument
panel, and controlled by the NAV/GPS switch, indicate whether the GPS roll steering signal
(GPS HDG) or the HSI heading error signal (MAN HDG) is interfaced to the autopilot HDG
mode:

1. GPS HDG (Green) This annunciator is not operative.

2. MAN HDG. (White) This annunciator is not operative.

C. SYSTEM SWITCHES:

Two switches, located on the GPS switch/annunciator unit Captain’s instrument panel, performs
the following functions;

1. The NAV/GPS switch is used to select between VHF NAV and GPS data for
display on the pilot’s HSI. This is a push button switch which is activated by
depressing the face of the switch. Either NAV or GPS will illuminate to alert the
pilot as to the position of the switching unit. This switch also controls whether
the Heading Bug or the GPS roll steering is connected to the Heading Mode of
the autopilot.

2. The lamp test switch is part of the MSG/WPT/HLD/APR annunciator and is

used as a “press to test” switch for the GPS system annunciators.

G. APPROACH MODE OPERATION

When an approach profile has been selected, an automatic “APPROACH ENABLE?” message
will be displayed at 30 NM from the Destination Airport. In the event the approach is activated
inside of the terminal area, the message will be displayed immediately. If not enabled, the
message will be repeated at a distance of 3 NM from the Final Approach Fix (FAF). Once
within a 30 NM area of the destination the approach enable message can be viewed by pressing
MSG.

The approach sequence will be as follows:

NOTE:

When within 30 nm of departure or destination airport, the FreeFlight 2101

I/O Approach Plus is operating in terminal mode, CDI scaling is ±1.0 nm full
scale.

1. To enable the approach sequence the pilot must enter the BARO setting using
the standard input procedures and pressing the ENT key

NOTE:

Only one approach can be in the flight plan at one time. The Approach data
cannot be altered, added to or deleted from the approach procedure
contained in the data base. The data base may contain some waypoints which
do not appear on the terminal approach procedures.

Parallel offsets are not allowed when the approach mode is enabled.

2. To disable the approach, select “-D>“ to a non approach waypoint, or press

MSG key until the Approach Enable message is displayed then press ENT and
use the large outer knob to place the cursor over the ENABLE word and the
small knob to DISABLE, then press ENT.

3. Waypoints will be flown in sequence as recalled from the data base. Waypoint
arrival and track change will be annunciated prior to all intermediate waypoints
from the Initial Approach Fix (IAF) to the FAF.

NOTE:

If the desired Track inbound to the Final Approach Fix is not within 70o of the
final approach course (FAF to MAP) when sequenced to the FAF, the Trimble
2101 I/O Approach Plus will automatically place the unit in HOLD mode
(HLD) at or abeam the FAF and prompt the pilot to enter the outbound

aircraft track is within 70o of the final approach course, the unit will prompt
the pilot to enter the final approach course inbound to the FAF.

When inbound to an approach fix followed by a course reversal, confirm that

the HLD annunciator is illuminated. Refer to the Pilot Guide or paragraph
G. 2. of this supplement for flight plan suspend procedures.

4. At 3 NM and when inbound to the FAF, the CDI sensitivity will change from
±1.0 NM to ±0.3 NM at the FAF.

5. At 2 NM from the FAF a RAIM prediction is calculated to ensure availability at

both the FAF and Missed Approach Point (MAP). RAIM will transition to
Approach Integrity and the APR annunciator will illuminate. If conditions are
normal no pilot action is required. If the APR annunciator doesn’t illuminate:
DO NOT DESCEND. COMPLETE MISSED APPROACH.

6. From FAF to MAP there is no pilot input required and RAIM Integrity is
continually monitored throughout the approach.

7. MAP to Landing: The waypoint light will illuminate approaching MAP and
at MAP the TO/FROM will change to FROM and course guidance presented
will be an extension of the inbound track.

8. MAP to Missed Approach: In the event a Missed Approach is initiated at or

after the MAP, the only required pilot action is to press “-D>“, “-D>“ which will
automatically provide direct steering to the first waypoint in the missed
approach procedure.

NOTE:

A direct course from the MAP to the holding point may violate the published
missed approach procedure. All missed approach procedures should be
executed manually.

9. Once a destination airport has been established with an ETA, the FreeFlight 2101
I/O Approach Plus will automatically determine RAIM availability at the
destination. The prediction shall cover a time period ±15 minutes from the ETA, in
intervals of 5 minutes. Predicted RAIM availability may be viewed from the
