Deep foundation is a type of foundation that transfers building loads to the earth farther down
from the surface than a shallow foundation does to a subsurface layer or a range of depths.
There are many reasons that a geotechnical engineer would recommend a deep foundation over a
shallow foundation, such as for a skyscraper. Some of the common reasons are very large design
loads, a poor soil at shallow depth, or site constraints like property lines.
A deep foundation is required to carry loads from a structure through weak compressible soils or
fills on to stronger and less compressible soils or rocks at depth, or for functional reasons.
Deep foundations are founded too deeply below the finished ground surface for their
base bearing capacity to be affected by surface conditions, this is usually at depths >3 m below
finished ground level.
Deep foundation can be provided at a greater depth. Provide lateral support and resist
uplift, effective when foundation at shallow depth is not possible, can carry a huge load, etc.
More expensive needs skilled labors, complex construction procedures, can be time-
consuming and some types of deep foundations are not very flexible, etc.

Driven Foundation
Prefabricated piles are driven into the ground using a pile driver. Driven piles are
constructed of wood, reinforced concrete, or steel. Wooden piles are made from the trunks of tall
trees. Concrete piles are available in square, octagonal, and round cross-sections (like Franki
piles). They are reinforced with rebar and are often prestressed. Steel piles are either pipe piles or
some sort of beam section (like an H-pile). Historically, wood piles used splices to join multiple
segments end-to-end when the driven depth required was too long for a single pile; today,
splicing is common with steel piles, though concrete piles can be spliced with mechanical and
other means. Driving piles, as opposed to drilling shafts, is advantageous because the soil
displaced by driving the piles compresses the surrounding soil, causing greater friction against
the sides of the piles, thus increasing their load-bearing capacity. Driven piles are also considered
to be "tested" for weight-bearing ability because of their method of installation; thus the motto of
the Pile Driving Contractors' Association is "A Driven Pile...Is a Tested Pile!"

Pile Foundations
Pile foundations are constructed through driving preformed units into the required
founding level or by drilling in, driving tubes filled with concrete to the desired depth. The tubes
can be filled with concrete in different ways – they can be filled during or before withdrawal, or
through drilling unlined, partly lined, or wholly lined boreholes before being filled with concrete.
These foundations are used when the soil, constructional or economic conditions make it
necessary to transmit loads of structures to strata that are beyond the reach of shallow
foundations. Besides supporting structures, piles can be used to help resist uplift, overturning,
and lateral forces. They are used as foundations for waterfront installations, bridges, and
buildings.

1. Bearing pile
They are driven till hard Strata or layer of Rock beds. The load is transmitted by columns
to the hard layer of soil.
2. Friction pile
These piles are used where the soil is soft at a considerable depth. The load is transferred
to the soft soil due to the friction produced between the soft soil which is in contact with these
piles.
1. Concrete pile
The piles which are made with the help of concrete are known as concrete piles. The
diameter of these pile varies from 30 to 50 cm. Minimum length of these pile is not taken less
than 20 meters and maximum it can be taken till 30 meters.
2.Cast-in-situ
These piles are made or manufactured on site where it is to be installed. So it saves
money as the transportation cost is reduced. These files bare load up to 750 KN.
As the name suggests these piles are made up of wooden so they are known as wooden or
Timber piles. For these piles, seasonal Timber wood is used. The diameter of the timber pile
varies in between 20 to 50 cm.
Length of a pipe is taken 20 times that of its diameter. (For Example – 25 cm is its
diameter. Then, L = 20 x 25 = 500 cm). The maintenance cost of these piles is more because as it
is wood if it comes in contact with water then it can be damaged by fungus or white ants. So care
has to be taken.
3. Steel piles
These files are generally in shape of ‘I’ or hollow section. It can be easily driven in the
soil because it has a very small cross-sectional area. These piles can be used as a bearing pile but
cannot be used as friction piles because if we use them as a friction pile it can sunk in the soil
due to structural load.
4. Composite pile
When the piles are made from more than one material they are known as composite pile. These
piles are made from concrete and wood. These piles are used in those areas where the water table
is up. These piles are used in such conditions just because concrete and wood both are good
water absorbers.
Caissons
These are hollow substructures that can be constructed near or on the ground surface and
are sunk to the desired level as a single unit. They have an enormous load-carrying capacity and
are commonly used for bridges.
Cylinders
These are small caissons with only a single cell.
Basement Foundations
These hollow substructures provide storage or working space below the ground level.
They’re constructed in open excavations. The functional requirements govern their structural
design.
Buoyancy Rafts
Buoyancy rafts, also known as hollow box foundations, are designed to create a semi-
buoyant or buoyant substructure below which the loading on the soil is decreased to the required
low intensity. They can be constructed in open excavations or sunk like caissons.
Buoyancy rafts are more expensive than traditional forms of foundations. For that reason,
their use is usually restricted to sites that are on silts, soft sands and other alluvial deposits that
are very deep, or where loads can be kept concentric. Schemes requiring underground tanks or
where it’s economical to incorporate deep basements into the design are common.
Shaft Foundations
These foundations are constructed by drilling a cylindrical hole within a deep excavation
and subsequently placing concrete or another prefabricated load-bearing unit in it. Their length
and size can be easily tailored. Drilled shafts can be constructed near existing structures and
under low overhead conditions, making them suitable for use in numerous seismic retrofit
projects. It may, however, be difficult to install them under certain conditions such as soils with
boulders, soft soil, loose sand, and sand under water.
Timber
Historically, timber has been a plentiful, locally available resource in many areas. Today,
timber piles are still more affordable than concrete or steel. Compared to other types of piles
(steel or concrete), and depending on the source/type of timber, timber piles may not be suitable
for heavier loads.
A main consideration regarding timber piles is that they should be protected
from rotting above groundwater level. Timber will last for a long time below the groundwater
level. For timber to rot, two elements are needed: water and oxygen. Below the groundwater
level, dissolved oxygen is lacking even though there is ample water. Hence, timber tends to last
for a long time below the groundwater level. In 1648, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam was
constructed on 13,659 timber piles that still survive today since they were below groundwater
level. Timber that is to be used above the water table can be protected from decay and insects by
numerous forms of wood preservation using pressure treatment (alkaline copper
quaternary (ACQ), chromated copper arsenate (CCA), creosote, etc.).
Splicing timber piles is still quite common and is the easiest of all the piling materials to
splice. The normal method for splicing is by driving the leader pile first, driving a steel tube
(normally 60–100 cm long, with an internal diameter no smaller than the minimum toe diameter)
half its length onto the end of the leader pile. The follower pile is then simply slotted into the
other end of the tube and driving continues. The steel tube is simply there to ensure that the two
pieces follow each other during driving. If uplift capacity is required, the splice can incorporate
bolts, coach screws, spikes or the like to give it the necessary capacity.
Iron
Iron may be used for piling. These may be ductile.
Steel
piles are a type of steel driven pile foundation and are a good candidate for inclined
(battered)piles.
Pipe piles can be driven either open end or closed end. When driven open end, soil is
allowed to enter the bottom of the pipe or tube. If an empty pipe is required, a jet of water or an
auger can be used to remove the soil inside following driving. Closed end pipe piles are
constructed by covering the bottom of the pile with a steel plate or cast steel shoe.
In some cases, pipe piles are filled with concrete to provide additional moment capacity
or corrosion resistance. In the United Kingdom, this is generally not done in order to reduce the
cost. In this case corrosion protection is provided by allowing for a sacrificial thickness of steel
or by adopting a higher grade of steel. If a concrete filled pipe pile is corroded, most of the load
carrying capacity of the pile will remain intact due to the concrete, while it will be lost in an
empty pipe pile. The structural capacity of pipe piles is primarily calculated based on steel
strength and concrete strength (if filled). An allowance is made for corrosion depending on the
site conditions and local building codes. Steel pipe piles can either be new steel manufactured
specifically for the piling industry or reclaimed steel tubular casing previously used for other
purposes such as oil and gas exploration.
H-Piles are structural beams that are driven in the ground for deep foundation application.
They can be easily cut off or joined by welding or mechanical drive-fit splicers. If the pile is
driven into a soil with low pH value, then there is a risk of corrosion, coal-tar epoxy or cathodic
protection can be applied to slow or eliminate the corrosion process. It is common to allow for an
amount of corrosion in design by simply over dimensioning the cross-sectional area of the steel
pile. In this way, the corrosion process can be prolonged up to 50 years.
Composite piles
A "composite pile" is a pile made of steel and concrete members that are fastened
together, end to end, to form a single pile. It is a combination of different materials or different
shaped materials such as pipe and H-beams or steel and concrete.

Deep foundations provide the key support for a wide range of buildings, bridges, towers,
dams and other massive structures. The success of deep foundations is dependent upon a
multitude of factors including but not limited to the type of pile and the type of driving
equipment used to install them.
The foundation design and installation method for your project can be determined
considering the unique and often widely varying soil conditions, and different magnitude and
nature of applied loads. Each phase of the design, installation, inspection, and quality assurance
testing is critical to the success of a deep foundation system in predicting if it meets its intended
purpose without compromise. Unfortunately, once the building is completed, the foundation lies
buried within the ground and cannot be conveniently reached for assessment or repair.
Construction schedules are tight, construction costs are high, and for some, it may seem
that testing deep foundations is a waste of time and a place where costs can be cut. However,
costs for quality control and testing are modest compared to the costs and complications of a
foundation failure. Bad publicity alone for foundation failure is immeasurable and remediation
costs are often as much if not more than the cost of the original foundation. High strain dynamic
pile testing can be used to optimize the foundation design and assist in reducing the risks of
foundation failure.
Advantages of high-strain dynamic testing over traditional static analysis testing include:
Testing is applicable to any type of driven pile material and cast-in-place foundation
methods
Relatively little pile preparation is needed
Piles and shafts can be randomly tested after installation
It is more economical and significantly faster than static load testing
Site variability is easily assessed by testing a higher percentage of piles on-site
Structural integrity is evaluated in addition to load bearing capacity
Testing can be easily performed at varying times to assess time dependent soil resistance
Pile load bearing capacity and axial capacity of battered piles can be easily tested
High-strain dynamic testing measures stress waves induced by hammer impacts. For driven
piles, the driving hammer itself is used for testing. For cast-in-place shafts, a drop weight is
needed. Data acquisition and real-time field analysis require a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and
at least two strain gages and two accelerometers. During testing the pile driving hammer
performance, driving stresses, pile or structural integrity, and an estimate of the bearing capacity
can all be monitored in real-time. Additional analysis should be performed using a “signal
matching” program (i.e., CAPWAP) to verify field capacity estimates, estimate a resistance
distribution, and provide a simulated static load test graph.
There are some limitations to high-strain dynamic testing. A large enough drop hammer is
required on-site to test cast-in place shafts, data interpretation and analysis require experience
and expertise, and elements of existing structures cannot be tested.
Capacity of Piles
The ultimate load capacity of the pile may be expressed as:
Qu = QP + Qs
When the pile penetrates weak soil to rest on strong soil or bed rock, the pile will
supported by the bed rock or the strong soil from at the pile end (end point of pile), So: QP =
Load carried at the pile end point In addition, when the pile penetrates the soil, the shearing
resistance between the soil and the pile should be considered in Qs where: Qs = Load carried by
the skin friction developed at the sides of the pile (caused by shearing resistance between the soil
and the pile)
Types of Pile
1.Point Bearing Piles:
If the soil supporting the structure is weak soil, pile foundation will used to transmit the
load to the strong soil layer or to the bed rock (if encountered), here the pile will resist the entire
load depending on its end point load QP and the value of Qs (frictional resistance) is very small
in this case, so: Qu = QP + Qs Qs ≈ 0.0 → Qu = QP (Point Bearing Piles)
2.Friction Piles:
When no strong layer or rock is present at reasonable depth at a site, point bearing piles
becomes very long (to reach strong layer) and uneconomical. In these type of soil profiles, piles
are driven through the softer (weaker) soil to specified depth, and here the point bearing load
(QP) is very small and can be considered zero, however the load on the pile will resisted mainly
by the frictional resistance between soil and pile (Qs) so: Qu = QP + Qs QP ≈ 0.0 → Qu = Qs
(Friction Piles)
In practice, we assume the pile resist the applied loads by its point bearing load and its
frictional resistance to estimate the ultimate load the pile can carry. Qu = QP + Qs In the
following sections, we will learn how to calculate the value of QP and Qs and thereby Qu for
sand and clay and C − ϕ soil

1. Determine the ultimate load capacity of the 800 mm diameter concrete bored pile given
in the figure below.
Solution

Note that the soil supporting the pile at its end is clay, so:

Since there are one sand layer and two clay layer, we solve firstly for sand and then for clay:

Note that the value of ϕ for layers 1, 3, and 4 is zero (clay), so we calculate
P = π × D = π × 0.8 = 2.51 m

2. A pile is driven through a soft cohesive deposit overlying a stiff clay, the average un-
drained shear strength in the soft clay is 45 kPa. and in the lower deposit the average un-
drained shear strength is 160 kPa. The water table is 5 m below the ground and the stiff
clay is at 8 m depth. The unit weights are 17.5 kN/m3 and 19 kN/m3 for the soft and the
stiff clay respectively. Estimate the length of 500 mm diameter pile to carry a load of 500
kN with a safety factor of 4. Using (a). α − method (b). λ – method.
Solution:
3. A concrete pile is 20 m length and 360 mm x 360 mm in cross section. The pile is fully
embedded in sand which unit weight is 16.8 kN/m3 and ϕ = 30°
