1950-1960: Late 1950s Boeing 707 released allowed access to long range flights for
ordinary people. 1960 (and beyond) small flight firms merged to form large
transcontinental firms and it allowed the introduction of package holidays.
1960-1970: Thomas Cook and Lunn Poly were formed in this era (1965) and many
high-street travel agents were established, also the choices for countries to visit were
quite wide that compared to the previous decade. This increased the numbers of
people travelling by quite a significant percentage. However travelling, without
mainstream media such as the internet did not have the reach it has nowadays.
1970-1980: 1978 the US Air Deregulation Act meant that almost every country in the
world liberalized, privatised or totally deregulated its domestic air transport system.
This led to increased price competition and other forms of marketing activity in
business and leisure travel markets. Thus cheaper holidays etc. were more widely
available.
1980-1990: Growth was stunted by the recession in the US in 1982 and so it had a
world wide impact of people lacking the monetary means to afford a holiday.
1990-2000: The internet was developed in this decade and it allowed for a broader
audience in which international flights and tourist destinations could be advertised to.
Early on there were some economic difficulties with the “Boom and bust economical
cycle” however by the end of the decade (and century) there was hope of a “great
stability” and therefore many people would have felt secure in paying for holidays
considering they were about to undergo a period of economical boom.
2000-2010: A number of major events led to only a steady increase of international
tourism. The twin tower attacks of September 11th 2001 and world wide recession
gave, in the first instance, a fear of flying and, in the second, a lack of monetary
means to do so furthermore the outbreak of SARS in Asia led to a decline of travel to
that continent in 2002/3. However with the web ever widening and competition ever
increasing the numbers were still able to increase.

Quest for Adventure-Normal working life to many seem very mundane and so when
they get their annual leave or just go on holiday they look for activities that are fun
and perhaps adrenaline filled such as sky-diving and bungee jumping.

Paid leave-In 1998 the Working Time Regulations was introduced. “Annual Leave”:
Every worker - whether part-time or full-time - covered by these regulations is
entitled to 4.8 weeks (24 days if you work a five day week). This will increase to 5.6
weeks (28 days if you work a five day week) from 1 April 2009.
Wage levels-This has led to more people being able to afford the even cheaper
holidays and thus more people are inclined to go out and see exotic placesDecreasing
costs-Competition between transnational corporations to attract customers thus
reducing prices which enables other “poorer” people the opportunity to go on holiday.

Life
expectancy-
Increased life
expectancy
means that
retirees need
to fill their
time with an
activity. This
has led to it
becoming
“seeing the
world” as
holidays have become more accessible.

Global awareness-Introduction of the internet has created a boom in knowledge of

non-local areas. Furthermore advertisement of holidays and more specifically of exact
locations has increased a global awareness for the average person.

Advertising-Expansion of the internet and the increased number of households with

TVs has led to an increased audience to which advertisement can be aimed upon. This
leads invariably to holiday goers and various techniques makes it also feel as it it’s
compulsory to have a holiday. . Furthermore economically holidays are very
beneficial to countries and so many countries encourage tourism towards their country
as a way of boosting its economy.

Expectations-With holidays so cheap and so many people going on holiday a holiday

is now the norm. It is expected to get out of the country or get off work. In fact it is
also very normal for people to retire just to “see the world”.
