Abstract:

A venturi meter are used to measure the volumetric flow rate of a fluid. From this virtual
experiment, we will obtain the flow rate measurement by utilizing venturi meters. This
experiment aims to determine the flow head relationship for this flow meter and to determine the
effect of Reynolds number on the coefficient of discharge (CD). We are gonna be using 3
different venturi tubes, the welded, casted and machined venturi tube. In this experiment there
are (no of venturi diameter) diameters to be used, 0.25, 0.5 (unit). Actual flow rates for both
water and kerosene is determined by using a constant volume with intervals of 10 lpm (0 lpm, 10
lpm, 20 lpm, 30 lpm, 40 lpm). We will compare the results of the flowrates from the flowmeter
by using graphs. It shows that venturi meter is (please insert result and conclusion). The
experiment was done successfully because we have completed the aim of this experiment

Introduction:

Normally, the size of pressure drop occurs in piping systems due to reduction in flow
passage. In industries such as chemical plants and mineral processing (eg. oil and gas), they
require accurate and efficient flow measurement and control.

A venturi meter is an instrument used to measure the velocity flow of fluids. Venturi
meter consists of the venturi tube and a differential pressure gauge. The tube has a converging
portion, a throat and a diverging portion. The converging portion in the tube increases the
velocity of the fluid and decrease its static pressure. The diverging portion (cone) on the other
hand, serves to disrupt the area of the flow back to the entrance area and convert velocity head
into pressure head. A pressure difference is developed by changing the flow passage within the
inlet and cylindrical throat portion of the tube and helps in determining the flow of discharge
through the pipeline.

A Venturi-Meter is used because of its accuracy of measuring fluid flow rate using a
Bernoulli’s principle work which illustrate that the velocity of a fluid increases with decreasing
the pressure. However, the device has studied by researchers for different purpose. (Elperin et al,
2002). It is widely used for large volume liquids and gas because it shows minimal loss in
pressure. The differential pressure instrument can be configured in order to exhibit and display
the flow rate instead of differential pressure (Herschel, 1888).
