QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE MANAGER

The objective of this assignment is to help students understand the qualities of effective
managers and how to deal with the VUCA environment.

The COVID-19 crises has had a severe impact on all economies across the world. India too has
been impacted by the crises in several ways as many sectors of the economy have been
impacted. have been.

A. Students are required to classify industry sectors into three categories namely -

1. Red - severely  and heavily impacted for e.g - automobiles, hospitality, travel & tourism

2, Orange - impacted to a large extent

3. Green - not impacted at all and showing a positive outlook.

B. Choose one sector in each zone - red, orange and green  

C. Bring out the challenges and opportunities for the chosen sectors in each of the three
classifications 

Ans A.

1. Red zone: Sugar Industry, Cement Industry, Synthetic Industry, Pharmaceuticals


Industry.
2. Orange zone: Fish Processing, Insecticides/Pesticides, Instant tea/coffee, Coffee
Processing, Fragrances and Industrial Perfumes.
3. Green zone: Handloom weaving, Ice cream or Ice making, Sports goods, Musical
instruments manufacturing.

Ans B.

1. Red zone: Sugar Industry


2. Orange zone: Instant tea/coffee
3. Green zone: Sports goods

Ans C. Challenges:

a) Consumption pattern declining


b) Reduced demand from FMCG companies
c) Export of sugar will get affected due to fall in international prices and disruptions
in supply chain.

Opportunities:
a) ‘Flexible industrial model’ similar to Brazilian one where we can easily switch
sugar/ethanol production
b) Production of quality sugar needs to be emphasized to compete with Brazil in
global market. As people stay in home during this lockdown demand may
increase from upper-middle-income society in domestic market.
c) Private Involvement with Government in betterment of supply chain network i.e,
logistic, storage, etc could reduce excessive loss.

2. Tea & coffee Industry:

Challenges:

a) Labour shotages
b) Supply chain disruptions
c) Already prevalent issues like low productivity, high production cost, lack of
economic support for small growers.
d) Due to perishable nature of leaves and disruption in storage facilities(chances of
loss is higher)

Opportunities:

a) Domestic demand being higher needs the match of supply as people during
lockdown will increase the consumption.
b) Following of proper ICMR guidelines for workforce in tea sector and if proper
care of women workers who form majority in this industry by Tea Board.
c) E-cautions of tea through E-NAM platform.
d) Resuming of Intra and Inter-state transportation could increase the scales.
