Computer
Computer is very important in the modern life. Speed and accuracy in obtaining information are
much needed. Solving the problem and making decision are necessities. In these cases, computer offers
us much help. It has ability to process data quickly and accurately.
The word computer derives from Latin word ‘computare’. It means to consider. It is now well-
known as an automatic electronic medium. It is able to store, collect and process data.
The computer machine consists of three major devices. They are input devices, Central
Processing Unit and output devices.
Input devices are parts that can be used to enter instructions or data into computer. They consist
of keyboard, light pen, mouse, scanner and optical mark reader.
Central Processing Unit or CPU is the brain of the computer. Here the instructions and data
from the input devices are processed and filed into computer memory system. There are two types of
memory system. They are external memory and internal memory. External memory-all instructions and
data either before or after processing-will be stored in diskette or hard disk in CPU of the computer.
Internal memory is a part o the system that is used to store data and programmes either permanently or
temporally.
Output devices-the instructions and data that enter the computer will be processed. The output
or the result will be displayed in output devices; such as screen monitor and printer.
The use of computer increases significantly in recent years, not only in business, but also in
school as well as at home.

Ondel-ondel is very popular in Jakarta. It is a giant with horrible face. The male ondel-ondel is
dressed like a man. He has a sword at his hip and a shawl over his shoulder. The female ondel-ondel
has a pair of earrings. She also has a shawl over her shoulder. Their heads are decorated with colourful
paper strings. Ondel-ondel is made of bamboo structure. Its face is made of wood-mask. Its hair is
made of palm-fiber. A man inside the structure moves it. The movement is very clumsy. Its arms are
dropping.
A pair of ondel-ondel are usually performed to celebrate circumcision. Tradirional music like
gambang keroncong, qasidah, tanjidor or gendang pencak, accompanies the procession. Of course
children are interested to follow it.
In the old days, people believed that a couple of ondel-ondel was manifestation of a god and
goddess who would protect the circumcised boy from danger or evil. Now ondel-ondel is performed to
welcome guests in opening ceremonies held in Jakarta and places nearby.

The Legend of Keong Emas


The legend of Keong Emas is one of the Panji Story, popular folktales in East and Central java.
The legend describes the romance, the separation and the reunion of Raden Panji Asmoro Bangun and
Dewi Sekartaji. It all stars when the King of the Antah Berantah Kingdom wishes to make Dewi
Sekartaji his wife and to do so, he kidnapped her. Fortunately, the god Narada saved Dewi Sekartaji by
changing her into a golden snail; Keong Emas. The god told Keong Emas to drift along the river in
order to find her husband, Panji Asmoro Bangun.
One day a poor old window Mbok Rondo Dadapan, who always fished along the river, found
the golden snail and took it home. There, she put the snail in a jar and took good care of it. All of a
sudden, unexpected good things took place in Mbok Rondo’s life.
Coming back from her daily fishing, she would find delicious dishes on the table and the house
cleaned. She wondered who had been so nice to take care of her house and to do the cooking. When
this went on for several days, she could not resist the temptation to find out who the mysterious kind
person was. So, one day, instead of fishing, she peeped through a hole in the wall of her house.
To her amazement she saw a beautiful princess coming out of the jar and starting to clean the
house and preparing a meal.
The next day, the same happened. Without wasting any time Mbok Rondo rushed into the house
and smashed the jar. ‘Homeless’ Dewi Sekartaji could not turn back into a snail. She was then adopted
by Mbok Rondo.
Meanwhile, Raden Panji Asmoro Bangun, searching for his wife, wandered from one village to
another, finally reaching Dadapan where he found his beloved wife. Filled with happiness and love,
they went back to their kingdom, taking a long good Mbok Rondo.

deliver them daily, weekly, two weekly or monthly. If we do not like subscription, we can buy them in

Nowadays, many children spend a lot of their time in front of the television. Some people say
that watching television can damage a child’s development, while some other say that the television
programmes can delight and educate children if they get a proper guidance. However, TV viewing is
often unguided.
