How would you define
social-emotional
health?
Social-Emotional
Learning (SEL)
“... the process through which
children and adults understand
and manage emotions, set and
achieve positive goals, feel and
show empathy for others,
establish and maintain positive
relationships, and make
responsible decisions” (CASEL,
2020).
5 Core Competencies

Self Awareness: recognize your emotions

and thoughts, assess your strengths and
weaknesses, process your confidence and
optimism
Self Management: regulate your
emotions, thoughts, and behaviors
Social Awareness: empathy, understand
social and ethical norms
Relationship Skills: establish and maintain
positive relationships
Responsible Decision-Making: make
constructive and respectful choices
Why is SEL important?
(Especially this year…)

● Students and teachers alike are

experiencing trauma at this moment.
● How we feel affects how we learn.
● We need the time and space to work
through this anxiety and loss.
● We can all face the ups and downs by
prioritizing community, connections,
and relationships.
