SALARY EXPLANATION
AND HOW WE GOT THE RESULTS
A salary is the regular payment by an employer to an employee for employment
that is expressed either monthly or annually, but is paid most commonly on a
monthly basis, especially to white collar workers, managers, directors and
professionals.

A salary employee or salaried employee is paid a fixed amount of money each

month. Their earnings are typically supplemented with paid vacations and public
holidays, healthcare insurance in country’s without universal coverage, and other
benefits.

Salaries are usually determined by comparing what other people in similar

positions are paid in the same region and industry. Most large employers have
levels of pay rates and salary ranges which are linked to hierarchy and time
served.

Source: https://marketbusinessnews.com/financial-glossary/salary-definition-
meaning/

How we got the results:

We have checked portals with job offers, salary reports and in some cases
contacted the local BIM communities to get the minimum, average and maximum
salary for each of four positions.

SALARY ASSUMPTIONS
While making the salary list, we had to make some assumptions and
simplifications in order to be able to present the results in an uncomplicated way:

- Annual salary is presented, even though in different countries it may be more

usual to see monthly, weekly or hourly salary.

- We show only gross wage, as taxes in each country depends on many variables.

- Only the local currencies are shown, since the average exchange rate changes
daily.

- No benefits or bonuses are included.

- There is no distinction between people with different amount of experience.

- There is no distinction between private and state sectors.

- We have focused on an average salary in the whole country. There is no

distinction between big cities where salary can be higher than in the smaller ones.

- Consultant and contractor sector is considered together.

WHY ARE THERE ONLY FOUR TYPES
OF PROFESSION IN THE REPORT?
You can find a lot of different names for work positions related with BIM
technology. We have decided to include three of them, which we believe are
most representative for the industry: BIM Manager, BIM Coordinator and BIM
Technician / Modeler. To compare the salary to a more traditional profession,
we have also included CAD Drafter in the list.

BIM MANAGER
A BIM manager is an engineer responsible for implementing the BIM
procedures during the design, construction, and handover of a project. They
are responsible for various tasks such as defining a BIM strategy, choosing right
project tools, implementing systems for communication and data exchange,
managing people and resources. BIM managers tasks can vary from
implementing and managing project, support, teaching, quality control, IT and
even coding. BIM Managers have to know BIM processes from inside out as well
as have excellent communication and IT skills.

BIM COORDINATOR
A BIM Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the BIM project, setting the
BIM protocol, testing the various aspect models and communicating them with
all the people involved. As a coordinator it is important to have knowledge of
several aspects, such as the software required for checking, knowledge of BIM
and communication with other companies.

BIM TECHNICIAN / MODELER

A BIM Technician/Modeler is the person who has responsibility for creating and
developing a BIM model of construction. BIM modeler is able to make new own
defined elements and components (for example custom Revit families). Level of
responsibility can vary widely between projects and firms but usually works under
supervision and assists. This position is often an entry level job given to new
graduated engineers. Often BIM Technician is not licensed Architect/Engineer,
but skilled enough to understand the modeling requirements.

CAD DRAFTER
Computer-aided design (CAD) drafters make detailed technical drawings utilizing
computers with CAD software. The electronically created and stored drawings can
be viewed, printed, or programmed directly into automated manufacturing
systems. Unlike hand-drawn documentation, CAD systems allow to quickly
prepare variations of a design. The first CAD software was invented over 60 years
ago. Although CAD drafters have been a pillar of the design industry for the last 2
decades, the new professions, using new technologies - like BIM technician - are
taking over their position.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
BIM adoption state

In 2013, the Dubai Municipality issued circular (196), which mandated the use of BIM (Building Information
Modelling) for architectural and MEP work on certain projects. This was subsequently widened by circular (207)
in 2015 to include architectural and mechanical works for buildings that are above 20 floors, buildings, facilities
and compounds with areas larger than 200 thousand square foot, buildings and special facilities like hospitals
and universities, governmental projects, and projects by foreign offices.

AUSTRIA
BIM adoption state
Austria has started with BIM standards in 2015, and over the last years ASI (Austrian standards) has developed a
series of standards for the implementation of BIM based on IFC. They have already developed standards that
deal with BIM technology on level 3 ÖNORM A 6241-1. However, adaptation is not happening at the desired
pace. Many BIM specialists are still needed.

AUSTRALIA
BIM adoption state
Seeing the advantages of using BIM technology, already in 2016 the Australian Government’s Standing
Committee on Infrastructure, Transport and Cities urged to make BIM compulsory on government funded
infrastructure projects exceeding AU$50 million in costs. However, different states in Australia follow their own
strategy. For instance, New South Wales Government mandated the use of BIM for Sydney Metro Northwest, a
project of roughly AU$8.3 billion, while the Government of Queensland, which is in front of the BIM
implementation in the country, has decided to follow the recommendation from 2016 and made BIM
mandatory for all public infrastructure projects of more than AU$50 million.

BRAZIL
BIM adoption state
At the moment, the use of BIM in Brazil is still in a starting phase. However following its BIM roadmap, Brazil is
going to mandate BIM in 2021. In the country's BIM-BR Strategy ('Estrategia BIM-BR'), the implementation is
planned in three phases, from 2021 until 2028. Even though BIM is not currently required at any level, the use of
this technology is growing. This happens especially among contractors, who utilize BIM in order to control costs
during the construction phase.

CANADA

BIM adoption state

The BIM adoption in Canada lags in comparison to other developed countries. Canada is the only country in G8
with no national BIM mandate. As for today, government shows little interest both at the federal and provincial
levels in works toward creation such a standard. What else, the industry is fragmented in effort to push a BIM
agenda. The BIM momentum is being driven outward mostly by the design community. So on, they push
upstream to owners and downstream to contractors proving the value of BIM processes and efficiencies.

DENMARK
BIM adoption state
Denmark has introduced BIM requirements in its public procurement legislation since 2007. From that time,
the use of BIM was mandatory for all public projects and in 2011 this requirement was extended to all regional
and local institutions. Currently, most large-scale projects are increasingly using BIM in Denmark. That made
this country become one of the European leaders in terms of implementing BIM. The government has been a
leading player in requiring BIM. Semi-government bodies set the standards and play a leading role in raising
the bar to workable solutions. Classification systems are promoted, which sets the criteria for cross-disciplinary
projects to flourish. Denmark is seen as an early adopter in BIM, VDC and prefabrication.

FINLAND
BIM adoption state
In Finland, Building Information Modelling has been developed and implemented for almost two decades. From
2007 government requires IFC for new structures and operation based on integrated models. Moreover, Finland
developed own requirements: Common BIM Requirements 2012 (YTV2012) for buildings and Common InfraBIM
Requirements 2015 (YIV2015) for infrastructure. In this two documents you can find how BIM models should be
made and what information should be included.

GERMANY
BIM adoption state
The German government still relies on the conventional method used by the AEC industry which has not fully
accepted BIM adoption and for which in 2015 government announced Digital Building Platform plan to be
developed. It is believed that by 2020 BIM will be mandatory for public infrastructure projects. Supporting the
implementation of BIM further, a group of industrial associations, major companies and non-governmental
organizations came together to set up a German BIM Steering Group – “Planen Bauen 4.0”.

BIM adoption state
Today, the understanding about BIM has increased in the country. Clients and the construction industry are
aware that BIM can provide them with the minutest information involved in the construction of a building.
However, the country needs to work on the awareness level. The majority of the users are limited to design and
engineering organizations.

IRELAND
BIM adoption state
BIM adoption survey held in 2017 showed that while Ireland is mature for modeling processes, it is less
developed with regards to collaboration processes and policies. Ireland also ranked poorly when it came to
regulatory frameworks, measurements and benchmarks compared to a number of countries which also applied
the same conceptual models. To change that situation, the Irish government has endorsed many initiatives,
such as the announcement of a strategy to increase the use of digital technology in crucial public works
projects, as well as contributing to the Digital Construction Transition Roadmap 2018-2021. The Irish AEC Sector
has, by default, led in the execution of parts of the roadmap and in doing so, achieved a number of significant
targets. However, there are still many vital objectives outstanding that will need funding if the key aims of the
roadmap are to be achieved.

ITALY
BIM adoption state
The Italian BIM implementation strategy began with the approval and publication of UNI 11337 and the “BIM -
Baratono - Decree” (DM 560/2017), which provides for the mandatory application of BIM methodology starting
from 1 January 2019. Italy aims to make the use of BIM mandatory for all new public buildings and large-scale
infrastructure projects. Progressive adoption of BIM started from 2019 solely to projects above 100 million euro
but it will gradually apply to smaller construction works. From 2025 BIM should be used, according to the
provisions of the decree, for almost all Italian public works.

The Mexican Government created a strategy for BIM implementation ('Plan Estratégico MIC') for public
infrastructure projects in 2019. At the moment the country is in 'adaptation phase' planned for years 2020-2021,
while 'implementation phase' will follow during period of 2022 - 2026. However, there are projects where BIM is
utilized already - like the new International Airport of Mexico City, where all of the disciplines used this
technology.

THE NETHERLANDS
BIM adoption state
In the Netherlands there is one of the highest BIM adoption rate in the world. The country has already
experience with open standards, as seen with the Dutch Information Exchange Standards (VISI) and the new
BIM Loket. The adoption of BIM is being driven by private-sector companies. The Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch
General Directorate for Public Works and Water Management) is one of the biggest clients in Europe and leader
in BIM implementation.

NORWAY

BIM adoption state

Norway is among the most advanced countries in case of BIM use and early adopters of the technology. BIM
standards or requirements are in place since 2010. BuildingSMART Norway is very active in developing the
openBIM standard. Norwegian authorities push the boundaries and require from contractors new methods that
could automate and simplify BIM processes. Furthermore, large design and construction companies use and
develop BIM technology themselves, as they have noticed the benefits of using it a long time ago. In addition,
in Norway there is actively used the VDC method.

There is no national BIM mandate in Poland. However in 2020 GDDKIA (General Road Directorate) signed a
contract to design a first public BIM pilot project of a bypass road. The Ministry of Development undertook a
project "Digitization of the construction process in Poland" to develop national standards and the first draft was
published this year. Nowadays BIM is used mostly by companies designing for international clients. Few General
Contractor companies have their own BIM departments and work on their own internal BIM standards.

BIM adoption state
Singapore demonstrated their full support for BIM back in 2010 when the Building & Construction Authority
(BCA) implemented its BIM Roadmap - an initiative that targeted the utilisation of BIM in 80% of construction
projects by 2015. The Singaporean Government places great value on efficiency, and has targeted a 25%
increase in productivity in construction over the course of the next 10 years. Nowhere is clarity on the benefits
of BIM more conspicuous than in Singapore. BIM is mandatory in Singapore since 2015 for all buildings over
5000 sqm. The Singapore BIM Guide Version 1.0 was launched in May 2012. It was updated and revised into the
Singapore BIM Guide Version 2.0, and released on August 2013

BIM adoption state
The country is on the right track and has developed strongly over the last years. But still is considered as a late
adopter. Much more is being done rather than talked about now, although there is still no BIM regulation to
date. The Working Group on Coordination of Digitization of the SIA Central Commission for Orders (ZO) has
published the new supplementary agreement BIM (SIA 1001/11) together with an associated commentary (SIA
1001/11-K). Both documents are available online for free download since June 2018.

standards. Most of the BIM work is driven by individuals (BIM enthusiasts). Because of this, the level of BIM
varies widely between different clients, regions, types of projects, etc.

UNITED KINGDOM
BIM adoption state

In 2011 UK had created own strategy for BIM implementation. in 2016 BIM became obligatory in public projects
which means that all projects funded by central government should be at lest on BIM Level 2. Until 2025, the
aim is to move to level three BIM, which is deeply embedded in the wider digital economy. This will require
further development of technologies and commercial models.

USA
BIM adoption state
U.S. does not have nationwide regulations that mandate the use of BIM technology for government
construction projects. There are a few reasons for that and the main one is that there is no single agency in the
federal government that is in a position to mandate BIM for all public projects in the USA, such as is done in
several European countries. Many professionals admit that it would not be practical to deploy a one-size-fits-all
solution for a construction economy as large and diverse as the one in the U.S. Several large federal agencies
have implemented BIM mandates, some of which, like ones adopted by the General Services Administration in
2003 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shortly after that, have contributed to BIM adoption throughout the
country. Several states also have BIM mandates, and the Federal Highway Administration recently launched a
focused initiative to encourage BIM use among transportation departments in all states. Many studies from the
past 10 years show steady growth in BIM adoption and implementation. A recent study of U.S. non-residential
contractors including general contractors, construction managers, and specialty trades, found that 89% of
respondents use BIM on at least some of their projects, with 47% reporting that they use BIM on more than half
of their projects.
