Configuring your instance with guided setup

This video Provides on overview of how to setup your instance, using Guided
Setup.

Introduction
As the administrator of a new ServiceNow instance, you’ll want to customize it
for your organization to serve the needs of your users. So where do you start?
Let’s help the system administrator for Cloud Dimensions perform the basic setup
for his company instance. This can be done with a guided setup wizard , which
provides you with step by step instructions to configure various applications and
modules within your instance. In this video we’re focusing just on the system
configuration and Welcome page tasks, but many of the same principles apply
to the other tasks within guided setups.

Guided Setup Homepage Overview

First, we navigate to the guided setup through the navigation filter. In our
example, we’ll be using ITSM, but different applications have their own guided
setups.

Before getting started, there are some useful points of information to refer to.
Here we see the completion indicator for all our guided setup steps. Each circle
represents a category and its status. Pointing to each circle shows what step the
circle represents.
• An empty circle means that the task has not yet started.
• A circle with a partial blue border shows us the percentage of the task
that is complete.
• A green circle with a check mark indicates that the task is completed.
• And a circle with a lock lets us know that the task is not activated… and
that you can look at the setup tasks but not perform them.

The pre-setup check list gives us information on items we’ll want to have in order
to configure the applications on our ServiceNow instance. In our case, we’re
focusing just on the system configuration and Welcome page, so we’ll want to
review the suggestions for Platform Branding.

Now that we’re ready to begin, we’ll click Get Started. The Company category
contains the steps for what we need to setup. Other categories within the
guided setup are available below. For the Company section of the guided
setup there are two tasks to complete, which we see here. To get started, we
can click any one of these…

Setting up the System Configuration

Or click Get Started, here. The Guided setup task page tells us about the
category we have selected for setup…As well as more specific information
about each task. When we’re ready to begin, we click the Configure button,
here……or here.

This Guided Setup task is going to help us configure the appearance of our
instance. Some of the more complex setups may offer some supporting
documentation. If there is any supporting documentation it will appear in the
help sidebar. We also have options to Mark this task of the setup complete…skip
this task…or navigate back to the guided setup homepage.

The first thing we’ll want to change is the page header caption. So we edit that,
here. We could also edit the Browser tab title, which appears here and defaults
to the title of the page the user is viewing. But we’ll skip that for now. Instead,
let’s upload a company logo to replace the ServiceNow logo. With the
company logo uploaded, we’ll want to select a complimentary background
color for the header.

To change the colors, you can use the color slider …enter a color name…a hex
color code…or an RGB color code from an HTML color code chart to modify the
value of the field and change the display. There…that looks good. We have the
same color options available to us to change the banner text…As well as some
other areas…But we’ll leave those for now.

We can also customize the default system settings. You can select a different
system time zone. If required by your organization, you can also select a
different default date format…and time format as well.

And we finish up by saving all of our changes. This message lets us know the
changes we made to the system properties were updated successfully. So we’ll
click here to mark the guided setup task complete, and move on to the next

step. This shows that we’re fifty percent done with Company category, having
finished one of two tasks. And four percent of the overall configuration is
complete.

Setting up the Welcome Page

But we’re on a roll here, so let’s click Configure to move on to our welcome
page. On the welcome page, we can display customized messages for users to
see. From the guided setup, we are sent here where we click New to create a
new message for the welcome page. We enter a short description…And a
message to point users to login with their credentials. Then submit. Make sure to
deactivate the default welcome message……And then click Mark as
Complete.

And here’s what our new welcome page looks like with the message and
banner we created. Back on the guided setup, we can see that the tasks for the
company section are now one hundred percent complete. And the overall
configuration is eight percent complete.

Assigning Tasks
There’s a lot of setup to do. So let’s get other administrators to help out. All tasks
in the category can be assigned to a single admin. Or they can be assigned
individually. The list only displays users with the admin role. And the assignee
receives an email notification of the assigned task.

The Guided setup makes it easy to track your progress as you configure the
applications on your ServiceNow instance. Give it a try!
