4Cs of 21st Century Skills: Collaboration

Activity

Students will work in teams with a Web 2.0 scavenger hunt, created with

Bookwidgets.com, to uncover a secret word by solving systems of linear equations and

inequalities

Description

In Algebra II, students end chapter one by solving systems of linear equations and

inequalities, which incorporates graphing equations and inequalities, rewriting equations and

inequalities, and solving equations and inequalities explicitly and implicitly. Students will move

through stations, finding the ordered pairs and use them to uncover a secret word.

As a staff, we have been working to find ways to provide opportunities for students to

demonstrate their understand outside of formal assessments and end-of-the-unit assessments

(summative assessments). This activity can serve as a review before an assessment or a

demonstration of knowledge for the students in place of a or in company with summative

assessment. A few years ago, I discovered Bookwidgets in an effort to deliver digital worksheets

and assignments, offer feedback digitally, retain a digital copy of students’ work, and improve

efficiency in my grading and delivery of assignments. With this application, I am able to

program the application to check the work of students, provide hints, timers, and embedded

links. Therefore, students have access to the tools they need to be successful with the activity,

fostering independence and engagement.

How It Fits

Collaboration emphasizes having students work together toward a common goal. I like to

add incentives to the mix, whether it be a prize from the prize jar or extra credit points on an

upcoming quiz in order to “raise the stakes” and reward success and collaboration. This activity

fosters having students work together to (1) find the correct solution for each question and (2)

work together to uncover the secret word (which is a word they often say in class). Some

students have different techniques to solving system than others, and so this activity offers an

opportunity to examine and hear a perspective, different from their own, as they all work towards

the common “correct response.”
