Motor System Trouble-Shooting

This motor tripped twice and stopped running. It was tested with an ohm meter and meg-ohm
meter and pronounced OK. The motor was hooked directly to line power and it ran. The plant
concluded the drive was faulty, and replaced it. The motor would not run. It was then replaced
and sent to a motor shop for evaluation.

The motor shop had an ALL-TEST IV PRO 2000 and re-tested the motor prior to repair process-

Shorted turns detected, later visually confirmed.
MCA would have saved 1- 1-1/2 days in resolving this
problem. Cost in your plant to lose 1 ½ days?

Diagnosing motor system faults where drives are in the circuit can be difficult and only using a
digital multi-meter and insulation to ground tester will cause you to miss common motor faults-
turn to turn and coil to coil shorts; particularly at the end turns of the stator windings.
