UK AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

“The industry is a collection of firms that offer similar products or services”

(PEARCE & ROBINSON, 2005)

From the above definition we can say that the UK Automobile Manufacturing

Industry is a set of similar firms such as, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet UK Ltd. and

Rolls Royce which manufacture automobiles such as cars, motor bikes in

UK by the use of various technologies, for the similar market.

This industry is very vast, sector will not be a wrong word for this industry,

as it comprises of various sub Industry like car manufacturing Industry,

commercial vehicle industry. Since automobile industry is so vast therefore it

is very interesting to know about the strategies and features of this particular

industry. Therefore this industry is perfect to take as a unit of analysis.

The above automobile manufacturing Industry provides wide range of

variety such as cars, commercial vehicle etc. for all segments of people and

also the services are not similar for all segments of people. Since each

automobile manufacturing firms deliver the similar motive which is

Transportation. Therefore it does not create any problem in defining its

boundaries.

The technologies being used in the manufacturing of similar product are

nearly same therefore we can count it as a boundary of the industry.

1
The geographical boundary of this industry is UK. However, the

globalization is also one of the major problems in defining the industry

boundary. As in today’s world the companies are going global so the

completion is not been restricted to a particular country.

In conclusion to above points I can summarize that UK Automobile

Manufacturing Industry is a set of similar firms such as, Alfa Romeo,

Chevrolet UK Ltd. and Rolls Royce which manufacture automobiles such as

cars, motor bikes in UK with the use of various technologies such as

programmable machines, robotics and tools for the similar market

SCOTTISH WHISKY DISTILLING INDUSTRY

The legal definition in the UK was established in the Scotch Whisky Act 1988

and The Scotch Whisky Order 1990. Under their terms, Scotch whisky is

whisky:

(a) Which has been produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted

barley (to which only whole grains of other cereals may be added) all of which

have been processed at that distillery into a mash; converted to a fermentable

substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems; and fermented only by the

addition of yeast.

(b) Which has been distilled at an alcoholic strength by volume of less than

94.8% so that the distillate has an aroma and taste derived from the raw

materials used in, and the method of its production.

(c) Which has been matured in an excise warehouse in Scotland in oak casks

of a capacity not exceeding 700 litres, the period of that maturation being not

less than three years.

(d) Which retains the colour, aroma and taste derived from the raw materials

used in, and the method of, its production and maturation, and to which no

substance other than water and spirit caramel has been added.

3
So from the above points we can say that, Scottish Whiskey Distilling Industry

is a collection of similar firms such as Aberlour, Benromach, Bowmore etc in

Scotland, which strengthens and purifies the spirit from the end product of

fermentation and also separates the solids, contained in the spirituous liquor

and send the distilled spirit for further manufacturing of Whisky.

The analysis of Scottish Whisky Distilling Industry will allow us to gather

information about its marketing strategy, its competition handling strategy and

also about its boundaries.

The technology used in all the Scottish whiskey distilling industry are different

such as some industry use pots stills for distilling and some uses copper stills

for distillation, but it does not create any problem in defining the industry

boundary, as they all fulfil the same motive which is distilling.

The geographical boundary for the above industry is Scotland as the set of

competing firms competes with similar products within Scotland only. So it is

very clear that it is not a problem in defining the geographical boundary for this

industry.

After analysing the above points I can summarize the definition of Scottish

Whiskey Distilling Industry as the group of similar distilleries in Scotland like

Aberlour, Benromach,Bowmore etc which produces the end product as a spirit

4
for the various consumers with the use of various distillation techniques such as

copper stills or pot stills.
