1. The compound para-aminobenzoic acid (you may have seen it listed as PABA on your bottle of
sunscreen) is composed of carbon (61.31%), hydrogen (5.14%), nitrogen (10.21%), and oxygen
(23.33%). Find the empirical formula of PABA.
3. Polymers are large molecules composed of simple units repeated many times. Thus, they often
have relatively simple empirical formulas. Calculate the empirical formulas of the following
polymers:
(a) Lucite (Plexiglas); 59.9% C, 8.06% H, 32.0% O
(b) Saran; 24.8% C, 2.0% H, 73.1% Cl
a. b.
lucite plexiglas - C5O2H8 saran - C4H5Cl3
59.9 g of C x (1 mol) / (12.01 g) = 4.99m mol 24.8 g of C x (1 mol) / (12.01 g) = 2.06 mol
8.06 g of H x (1 mol) / (1.008 g) = 8 mol 2.0 g of H x (1 mol) / (1.008 g) = 1.98 mol
32.0 g of O x (1 mol) / (16 g) = 2 mol 73.1 g of Cl x (1 mol) / (35.45 g) = 2.06 mol
