- Getting Started

G ett i ng Sta rt ed wit h t he edd yMax Sys te m

Normally you will receive the eddyMax system preinstalled on a computer. If you purchased
only boards and the inspection software you have to make the installation by yourself. This
procedure however is rather simple and can be performed without problems.

1. Installation of eddyMax-Board and Software

The eddyMax-board is suitable for installation in any IBM-AT or compatible
computer. The hardware requirements are :
* IBM-AT or compatible computer with Pentium or 486 DX CPU *
at least 1MB free EMS capacity
* VGA - graphic board
* single board: Free I/O-addresses 300H - 307H
* dual board: Free I/O-addresses 300H - 30FH
* Free interrupt IRQ 5 or 7

For working with DOS, we recommend Pentium 200 or higher, for working with
Windows 95/98, we recommend AMD K6 300 or higher.

1. Installation of eddyMax-Board

-a- Switch the mains switch of the computer in position "off" and pull the
mains cable.

-b- Disconnect all junction cables with which the computer is connected.

-c- Open the computer case as instructed in the computer documentation.

-d- Look for a free ISA slot where the eddyMax board is to be installed.

-e- Remove the plate at the backside of the computer behind the selected
slot.

-f- Put the eddyMax board into the slot. The board fixing plate with the
connectors has to point to the back of the computer.

-g- Screw tight the fixing plate of eddyMax board on the computer case.

-h- The case can be closed and the computer is ready for operation.

The eddyMax board has two connectors on the rear blade. These connectors are used for
probes and additional components like triggers.

1. Connector Layout

The eddyMax-board is designed as an universal eddy-current test instrument which enables

the connection to nearly all known eddy-current coil systems like bridge probes, probes with
separate transmitter and receiver coil or parametric probes. The probe connector additional
has a 1 2V-output and a trigger input.

The eddyMax-board has a 9-pin and 15-pin socket at the slot

blade.

The 9-pin socket is the connector for probes.

The 15-pin socket is a system connector to operate with

external components.

2. The Probe Adaptors

To connect different probes and probes from different manufacturers, special adapters can be
delivered. The probe adaptors have the eddyMax 9-pin connector on one side and the
corresponding probe connector on the other side.

If you want to connect own probes to the eddyMax board, the following basic principle
sketches shoul be considered.

Send-Receive Circuit

3. Testing in simultaneous absolute / difference mode

With 2 eddyMax plug-in boards, it is possible to test with 2 independent probe
channels. Alternatively, it is possible to test with one probe simultaneously in
absolute- and in difference mode. For this mode you need a special probe
adaptor and a second probe or a dummy load for compensation of the absolute
bridge. The following figure shows the principe of this mode.

To have a good balanced absolute bridge, the second probe or the dummy load
should have the same inductivity as the testing probe. We recommend for this to
use a spare probe positioned in a calibration tube.

The next picture shows the electrical connection of the probe in simultaneous
absolute- and difference mode.

The
Bridge
Probe
connector is: Amphenol Mil Series 097 Size 14s 4pin.
