Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines (PAL), a trade name of PAL Holdings, Inc. (PSE: PAL ), also known historically (until
1970) as Philippine Air Lines, is the flag carrier of the Philippines. Headquartered at the PNB Financial
Center in Pasay City, the airline was founded in 1941 and is the first and oldest commercial airline in Asia
operating und Ninoy Aquino International Airport of Manila, Clark International Airport of Angeles,
Mactan-Cebu International Airport of Cebu, and Francisco Bangoy International Airport of Davao,
Philippine Airlines serves 31 destinations in the Philippines and 54 overseas destinations in Southeast
Asia, East Asia, Middle East, Oceania, North America and Europe. Philippine Airlines operates a mixed
fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft with Airbus A320, Airbus A321, Airbus A321neo, Airbus A330, Airbus
A350, and Boeing 777-300ER.

History

Formerly one of the largest Asian airlines, PAL was severely affected by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. In
one of the Philippines' biggest corporate failures, PAL was forced to downsize its international
operations by completely cutting flights to Europe and Middle East, cutting virtually all domestic flights
except routes operated from Manila, reducing the size of its fleet, and laying off thousands of
employees.

The airline was placed under receivership in 1998, and gradually restored operationst on many
destinations. After PAL's exit from receivership in 2007, PAL embarked on a frequent revamp of
management. However, PAL's vision to re-establish itself as one of Asia's premier carriers, is still the
matter of greatest importance. February 1941 Philippine Airlines is founded by a group of businessmen led
by Andres Soriano, one of the country's leading industrialists.
March 1941  A month after being incorporated by a group of Filipino businessmen, Philippine Airlines takes
to the skies with a twin-engine, five-seater Beech Model 18 aircraft from Nielsen airfield in Makati to
Baguio. September 1941 The Philippine government invests in PAL, paving the way for the airline's
nationalization. September 2, 1942 PAL begins service to Cebu.February 14, 1946 PAL resumes post-World
War II operations with services to 15 domestic points.  The fleet consists of five Douglas DC-3s.July 31, 1946
PAL becomes first Asian airline to cross the Pacific when it operated a chartered Douglas DC-4 on the first of
several flights to ferry home initially 40 US servicemen. Each crossing took 41 hours with fuelling stops at
Guam, Wake, Kwajelein and Honolulu.September 5, 1946 PAL opens services to Hongkong and Shanghai
with DC-3s.  FEATI went to the same cities with DC-4s.  Then President Manuel A. Roxas agreed to invest in
both airlines for the purchase of new aircraft provided government representatives sat as chairmen of the
board.November 14, 1946 An air treaty between the Philippines and the US was signed. Among other things,
the treaty limited the Philippines to one route across the Pacific which PAL was already operating, while
American airlines were allowed two in the exchange of air services. It also gave fifth freedom rights to and
beyond Manila while the Philippines was allowed only traffic to and from the US. The Philippines had little
choice in the matter as it badly needed American aid for rehabilitation.

Developed into Airbus A320neo family

The first member of the A320 family—the A320—was launched in March 1984, first
flewon 22 February 1987, and was first delivered in March 1988 to Air France. The family
was extended to include the A321 (first delivered 1994), the A319 (1996), and the A318
(2003). The A320 family pioneered the use of digital fly-by-wire flight control systems, as
well as side-stick controls, in commercial aircraft. There has been a continuous
improvement process since introduction. Final assembly of the family takes place
in Toulouse, France, and Hamburg, Germany. A plant in Tianjin, China, has also been
producing aircraft for Chinese airlines since 2009, while a final assembly facility in Mobile,
Alabama, United States, delivered its first A321 in April 2016.
In December 2010, Airbus announced a new generation of the A320 family, the A320neo.
A320neo offers new, more efficient engines, combined with airframe improvements and
the addition of winglets, named Sharklets by Airbus. The aircraft saves up to 15% of fuel
and is the fastest selling commercial aircraft everFirst A320neo was delivered
to Lufthansa on 20 January 2016 and entered service five days later.[12][13]
As of December 2019, a total of 9,247 A320 family aircraft have been delivered with 8,796
still in service, where American Airlines was the largest operator with 412 aircraft in
service. A number of 6,068 airliners were on firm order resulting in a total order of
15,315. In October 2019, it surpassed the direct competitor, the Boeing 737, to become
the highest-selling commercial aircraft ever. The A320 family is popular with airlines,
including low-cost carriers such as EasyJet, which replaced its 737 classic fleet with the
A320ceo and became a fully A320 operator.
