GTIL2 INVERTER BASIC

Newbie corner- no.1 Most frequently asked question.

The most frequently asked question is how to match solar panel and GTIL. I have already
discussed it twice already .
It was written 2016, now its 2019.
If you are a newbie, pls check the tutorial links in the announcement section.
Many new and even old members still ignore the announcement, without knowing that it
contains valuable information that need to be learned if you are interested in the GTIL product.
for 2019, here it is again , for newbies, and even for some old members and old GTIL users.
MATCHING SOLAR PANEL AND GTIL2
1. THE VERY FIRST THING TO LOOK AT IS VOC- Voc means open circuit voltage.
A> Solar panel Voc -is the voltage generated by the solar panel, when expose to the sun, but not
connected to inverter. You can see the Voc rating of the panel at the back side of the panel, in the
sticker.
B> GTIL2 Max Voc rating- Max Voc rating is either 65v or 90v.
This means that Solar panel Voc should not exceed 65v or 90v.
If solar panel Voc is above GTIL2 Voc, GTIL2 will not run and has the risk of bursting the
capacitor inside.
C> Minimum Voc of solar panel that GTIL2 can accept-
1.For 65v Voc model- The minimum suggested Voc of solar panel Voc is 40v for best
effciency.OR 83% of the min.VOC.=33v This is just my own estimate base on experiences.
The actual manufacturer recommendation is operating voltage should be above 27v so that
inverter can produce its rated output. Operating voltage is the voltage of solar panel when
connected to inverter and inverter is producing power. If the solar panel operating voltage is
below 27v, inverter will not produce its rated power. Again base on experiences, if the solar
panel Voc is above 40v, you will most likely get above 27v operating voltage.
2. For 90v Voc model- The suggested solar panel Voc is above 70v. Manufacturer
recommended operating voltage is above 53v . Again based on experiences, if the solar panel
Voc is above 70v, you will most likely get above 53v operating voltage.
Again for newbies, Voc is always higher than operating voltage. The lower voltage is caused by
voltage drop in solar panel itself and the voltage drop in the wires from solar panel to inverter.
Also, the higher the heat or temperature of solar cells, the greater is the voltage drop. High
quality panels has lower voltage drop due to heat.
2. What is the minimum and maximum watts of solar panel that can be connected to inverter.
There is no limit. You can put as few or as many as you want solar panel. The main requirements
is VOC. As long as Voc of GTIL2 and solar panel is matched, the GTIL2 will operate correctly.
The rule of thumb is 1:1. Meaning for 1000w panel, use 1000w GTIL2. You will never go wrong
following this rule.
20% higher watts of solar panel vs the GTIL2 watts rating is still fine based on predicted
economics by different inverter manufacturers. Follow this rule and then you can proceed
on wiring , understanding protective devices, understanding how to position your solar panel
and installation on the roof, then you will be up and running your solar set up in no time..
You can go as high as you want solar panel watts to use but use your common sense and predict
the economics or ROI or return on investment. For example , why will you use 2000w panel if
your inverter is only 1kw? 1kw inverter actually can only produce maximum 950w only.
In a case that you want to start with lower wattage of solar panel, again its fine as long as solar
panel and GTIL2 Voc are matched. This is normally done by customers with limited initial
budget, and who will upgrade later when money becomes available.
REMEMBER VOC. It is the first requirement in matching solar panel and GTIL2. But the
foremost requirement is SAFETY FIRST!
