1. What major changes happened in the 19 th century Philippines?
The 19th century Philippines is a period of major changes which affects men and
society.

 Responses to the growing social problems created by the industrial revolution

2. How have these changes affected Rizal and/or his family?
Jose Rizal opposes the influence of the friars, for he saw them as an obstacle of
freedom and to progress. He then sought that the country should be free, and that

Filipinos would not allow themselves to be slaves. It was the growth of a free people,
proud of its past working for its future, united in a common sets of ideas.

III. ABSTRACT
Explain the concept of the key terms and phrases;
1. Anti- Clericalism – the opposition to religious authority, towards political and social matters.
2. Ilustrados – a class of educated Filipinos from Spain and was exposed to European nationalist
ideology.
3. Liberals – supporters of policies that are gear towards social progression and social welfare.
4. Conservative – supporters of the policies that averse to change while holding into traditional
values.
5. Radicals – people who advocate political or social reform completely.
6. Inquilinos – means “tenant” a laborer that is indebted to landlord who allows the tenant to form
a farm in parts of his property with the agreement to pay off the debt.
7. Growth of Export Economy – the rise of export in a country which equals the growth of an
economy’s prosperity.
8. Semi- Feudalism - -having some aspects of feudalism but with the control of power not in the
feudal lord’s possession.
9. Humanism – a philosophical stance that emphasizes the rights and value of people to live in
comfort and happiness.
10. Criollo – Filipinos with foreign heritage, be it European or Chinese ancestry.
