Preface
Thanks to Almighty God who has given His bless to the writer for finishing the
Contextual Written Language Skills assignment entitled “ Critical Book Review “.
The writer also wish to express his deep and sincere gratitude for those who have
guided in completing this paper. This paper containing about advantages and weakness in two
books that can be used as motivation to be better again for the reader. This paper also discuss
about which book is better to read.
The writer also write some of the abridgement of the contents of the book in order to
be able to help the reader to understand the contents of the book that used in the critism. The
writer also hope that this paper can be used in accordance with its function.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. INTRODUCTION BOOK 1
The title of book 1 is “ IELTS Academic Reading Practice Test “ from British
Council consist of 14 pages. From this book, we can see that there are some instructions
to candidates before they begin the test, such as what should you do and do not do when
you’re in IELTS Academic Reading Practice Test. And also there are two informations
for candidates, such as how much the question and etc.
There are three reading passages which is consist of three or more paragraph every
reading passage with the question below it. And also the question is asking about the
passage and usually there are five questions or more for one reading passage.
For reading passage 1 we should spend 20 minutes to read and answer the question
number one to thirteen. One to seven want us to answer true, false, or not given with
some statements and eight to thirteen want us to answer the question with choosing one
choice from four choices. And we should write our answer on answer sheet.
For reading passage 2 we should spend 20 minutes to read and answer the question
number fourteen to twenty six. Fourteen to twenty two want us to classify the following
typical with the sentence that has been written and twenty three to twenty six want us to
complete the sentence. And also we should write our answer on answer sheet.
For reading passage 3 we should spend 20 minutes to read and answer the question
number twenty seven to forty. Twenty seven to thirty one want us to match the statement
with the paragraph on reading passage 3, thirty two to thirty five want us to make a choice
like do you agree or not with the first statement you can answer yes, no, or not given, and
thirty six to forty want us to choose no more than two words from the passage for each
sentence. And don’t forget to write your answer on your answer sheet.
B. INTRODUCTION BOOK 2
The title of book 2 is “ IELTS General Training Reading Test “ from unknown consist
of 53 pages. From this book we can see that there are some instructions for students
before they begin the IELTS.
There are three sections in the General Training Reading Test.
Section 1 has texts concerned with survival in everyday life—these are short
texts, perhaps two or three texts, that contain mainly short, factual sentences.
Section 2 has a text, or two texts, concerned with survival in a training
situation—these have longer sentences with more complex language that in
section 1.
Section 3 is a longer text that is usually an article on a general subject and has
a more complex structure and more complex language.
And there are 40 questions to answers and we can write it on answer sheet. In this book
they also presents examples of answers that must be written for Reading IELTS Question.

DISCUSSION
A. Strengthness
Book 1
This book makes many samples of reading exercise. It makes the reader or the
user of this book trained.
Book 2
- This book explains the reading skills tested. It makes the reader more
understand about the reading skills test.
- This book explains the reading strategies we will need to use. It makes the
reader know the best strategy to do reading IELTS.
- This book is good enough because we can find some exercise that make us
more understand and trained.
B. Weakness
Book 1
- This book should be supplemented with sample answer and quick ways to
answer the question.
- The author of the book is not displayed.
- This book isn’t equipped with introduction.

CLOSING
A. Conclusion
Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded that book 1 and book 2 have their
own strengthness and weakness. But book 2 is superior to the book 1 because book 2
explains more about how to answer Reading IELTS questions and also provides examples
of answers. Whereas book 1 only shows a collection of questions without any way to
answer them.
B. Suggestion
Book 1 should more explain about how to answer the question in IELTS like book 2
did. And also book 2 should add more examples of questions and answers about Reading
IELTS to attract the attention of the reader.
