Listening Lesson Plan

Notes:

The objective of this lesson is to make students engage with Yasunori Nishiki, a 21st

JRPG composer, and engage with video game music with a critical and analytical mindset. I

would have loved to separate the students off into breakout rooms to find the remaining

instruments, but the process of creating breakout rooms will cut my ten minutes of instruction

down to the wire. I would like to maintain a low key environment due to the subject matter, so I

used my knowledge of color theory and picked a bluish-greenish background color for the

presentation.

Sequence:

● Briefly introduce Octopath Traveler and the story behind its development

● Explain how the game’s structure works using the character portraits

● Talk about Alfyn to transition to the subject of my lesson, Clearbrook

● Give the students the first link

● (Hook) Ask students to list the instruments that they hear in the first section of

Clearbrook

● Students will share what they heard and we will construct a class-wide list of

instruments.

● When we are close to the completion of our class list, I will ask the students what

the flute like instrument was. I will then introduce the Shakuhachi, and add it to

the list of instruments.

● I will do the same for the Congas, a cuban percussion instrument.

● Then, individually, the students will be tasked with identifying the rest of the

instruments.

● We will reconvene, and quickly fill in the second instrument list with instruments

and move on to the discussion portion of the lesson.

● At the end, we will talk about how Nishiki’s music captures the serene location of

Clearbrook

● If we have enough time, I will give them the recording of the main theme of the

riverlands and ask them to play it quietly while we discuss Nishiki deciding to use

these instruments for the areas in the Riverlands.

Objective:

In less than 10 minutes, students in ATM II pretending to be middle schoolers will be

able to identify the various instruments in Clearbrook, by the Pristine Waters by Yasunori

Nishiki including the shakuhachi, a traditional japanese flute, and the congas, a cuban percussion

instrument on zoom, with a success rate of 80%
