Quick Recap on Citations:
 Use last name only – (Michael Adams, 2010) should be
(Adams, 2010).
 Difference on the use of “and” between author-prominent
and info-prominent citations.
Adams and Ali (2010) | (Adams & Ali, 2010)
 Alphabetical order of multiple citations used at the same
time. (Ziela & Adams, 2010; Andy, 2012; Lee, 2013) should
be (Andy, 2012; Lee, 2013; Ziela & Adams, 2010).
 Multiple citations from the same author but different years.
We split the years using comma (,) not semi-colon (;).
E.g. Adams (2010, 2014). = this means you are citing two
sources by Adams at the same time.
 Citations involving 3 to 5 authors = make sure you
remember that 1st time usage, we list all names. But after
that, just use et al.

benefits to the students while leading to other
drawbacks.

presented (2 pros and 2 cons - keywords).

Topic: Group Assignments Should Be Abolished

Good Preview

Ultimately, abolishing group assignments help students to be


less stressful and be more committed to their learning. However,
it can impede the cultivation of team work and also limit
communication skills.

 Conjunction – Please use TWO in each point (paragraph


for points) – E.g. First and foremost, In addition, Moreover,
Adding on to the pros, Despite that, Thus, Hence…

 Modals (may, can, might, could, should) – use TWO in


each point (paragraph for points) – AVOID USING “WILL”
unless you have a clear date/time in the future. E.g. This will
cause them to fall sick the next day.

 Engagement Markers – Use ONE in each points. Refer to


next slide for some examples

1. Rhetorical questions – questions that you asked to engage


the reader to think. E.g. What would happen if students are
tied up with a lot of assignments?

2. Reader’s involvement – asking readers to join in. E.g.


Let us imagine a university free of assignments.

3. Using Personal Pronouns – E.g. As we know; This is


something that we must overcome….

4. Persuasive markers (“debate style”) – E.g. As proven in the


recent case of students’ drop outs,…..; It is undeniable that
many students are suffering from…; Statistics in 2010 indicated
that job employment is dropping….
