BSED III – English

1. Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the story?
The selection was entitled “The Blind Men and the Elephant”, in the title we can see a
glimpse of who will be the characters in the story. The six blind men are the characters,
while the elephant is just a subject from the story where the six blind men talk argue and
discuss about.

2. Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic?
The narration of the story was in the third person point of view and through this
approach, we can see the different perspectives of each character. We were able to see
each perspective of six blind men towards the appearance of elephant.

3. Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how are
they reacting to events?
The six blind men were curious about the appearance of an elephant. They have
their own judgement or assumption regarding to the elephant. As the story started, they first
construct their assumptions and when the story is in the middle part, they able to prove to
themselves that their assumption is true however, the only thing that they touched is the
body part of what they assumed.

4. Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it expressed
in the language and setting?
On my own interpretation, the mood of this selection is that they are arguing which
perspective or opinion really matter or true. It was shown in the story that they respectively
have presupposition or belief about the elephant. However, the mood changes when they
were scolded by the Rajah and asks them if they are certain in their assumptions.

5. Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story?

The characters in the selection were the six blind men who lived in the village of
India. As you read the story, it was explicitly shown the character development of the six
blind men, from arguing regarding the truth or factual information about the elephant to
learning what is really true appearance of elephant by combining their assumptions to form a
whole picture of the elephant. However, the story ends with a cliffhanger but we can assume
that they were able to learn how they will know the truth and accept different perspectives of
everyone.
6. Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they
communicate with each other? How do they handle conflict?
The relationship or the connection of the characters was absurd and inappropriate
because each of them were eagerly wanting to persuade one another. However, it was
mentioned that they have a discourse again when they encounter and touch the elephant.
The dispute was only interrupted by Rajah. Rajah has a vital role in the story because
through him, the six blind men were able to know that having different perspective is okay
and each of them need to respect it.

7. Plot: What are the main events in the plot that lead the character to new insights, or to his
or her failure?
The main event of the story is when the Rajah interrupted the disposition of the six
blind men. The blind men were enlightened regarding having different perspectives by Rajah
and through him. Through the enlightenment done by Rajah, this lead the six blind men to
have new lesson and insight regarding the elephant.

8. Theme:
The theme of the selection is that having different perspective is okay. Everyone
possess it; however, we should keep in my mind showing respect towards the beliefs or
opinions of other people is what really matters. We are subjective humans who have diverse
train of thoughts towards a certain issue or thing.

9. Your Own interpretation of the story:

My own interpretation of the story is like this quote “Just because you are right does
not mean, I am wrong. You just haven’t seen life from my side.” We have a diverse opinion
and proving other wrong because they have different perspective from ours is a wrongdoing.
This selection shown the importance to see things in different lenses or perspective because
we have manifold and various thoughts and judgement.
