GoK organise Contest to design and produce to Cool Jacket
The Department of Industries and Commerce, Kerala intends to organise public
contest to design and produce a ‘Cool Jacket’, which can protect the workers from sun burn and problems caused by high temperature. This special move by the South Indian State, which recently had emerged as one of the most investment-friendly Indian states, is as part of its continuous efforts for Industrialisation and entrepreneurship development. Two third of the world is in tropical area and a large number of labourers, mainly the construction workers, work in open spaces under the burning sun without any protection. Lakhs of Keralites as well as people of other states of India employed in gulf countries are the major victims of this situation. A few north Indian states also face the threat of sunburn. In Kerala also this has become a serious problem as the atmospheric temperature rose to 50 degree Celsius in the in hot summer in recent years. It would be a great relief for such workers and other people living in hot climate if a suitable jacket is designed to maintain their body temperature below the ambient temperature just opposite as the woollen jacket that protects us from cold. Such a jacket, which can be worn continuously, would enable them to operate comfortably resulting increased efficiency. The cool jacket should maintain the body temperature of the person to at least 10o C below the ambient temperature for minimum eight hours. It should be of light weight, portable and suitable to use in open spaces. The cool jacket should cover entire body including head. Experts say that materials like dry ice, special fabric etc can be used to produce the cool jacket. But the Government does not put forward any suggestion on this. Design, technology, manufacturing process etc are to be selected accordingly. The source of energy, if needed, can either be solar or rechargeable battery or any special substance which could ensure refrigeration. In the first stage of the contest, proposals for design, production idea, concept etc, will be invited from the public. An expert committee will evaluate the ideas so submitted. The Committee shall select ten proposals after interviewing the persons who come up with excellent ideas and those ten persons will receive Rs. 1 lakh each for producing the cool jacket. In the second stage these ten selected innovators have to demonstrate their product before the expert committee. All other interested persons, either participated in the first round or not, are also eligible to demonstrate their products made with their own money without any assistance from the Government. Based on the overall performance of these products, the expert committee will select three most excellent innovators who will be provided with Rs. 10 lakhs each for the commercial production of the product. The entire process of this contest shall be completed within six months. This is the second contest in this series which is a special initiative of the State Government to encourage and promote innovators and inventers and to address a few serious needs of the society, especially the working class. The first in this series was to develop a coconut harvesting device which can be controlled from ground. It is in the culmination point as the final round of the competition, which is a demonstration round, is taking place on 7 and 8 of October at the Agricultural College coconut farm in Vellayani near Thiruvananthapuram. Nearly 40 devices are expected to be demonstrated in the event. There were 462 contestants in the first round of this competition. This time in the Cool Jacket Developing Contest at least 1000 applications are expected to participate from all over the world. ½˜¾²¦°Ô¸
