Technical background
The rubbing of the brakes can have several causes. The rubbing depends especially on the driving
characteristics, the resulting brake disc temperatures and the environmental conditions.
1. Thickness variations of the brake discs after a certain mileage, which cannot be detected using normal
workshop measuring methods.
2. Corrosion of the brake disc.
3. Corrosion marks through sticking (corroded) brake pads on the brake disc.
4. Deposits on the brake disc because of thermal stress.
5. Droning noises because of reducing damping characteristics with strong wear of the brake pads.
6. Very high thermal stress of the front brakes, marked by blue tempering of the brake discs and possibly heat
marks.
7. Imbalance or radial runout of the wheels can significantly amplify the rubbing or lead to body vibrations
which only become noticeable when braking.
8. Changes on the running gear, such as wider track, no genuine Volkswagen wheel/tyre combination
(incorrect centring).
9. Incorrectly cleaned hub centre during repair work.

Measure
The customer statement can be reproduced in a test drive.
Complete ⇒ attached test plan and the data sheet "Brakes rub".
With warranty/goodwill claims the completed forms have to be attached to the damaged parts and the DISS
online.
• Brake discs that are tarnished blue or have burn marks (example see brake disc photos) indicate a great
thermal stress of the brake system (with distortion and structural changes of brake discs). The great thermal
stress leads to lasting damage on the brake discs and brake pads.

Notes on point 7. (under Technical background)
• Balance all wheels. The balancing includes improvements of static and dynamic imbalances and radial force
fluctuation.
• The radial force fluctuations can only be measured and matched with VAS 6230.
Notes on point 8. (under Technical background)
• Thorough clean the contact surfaces of the hubs (remove corrosion) on the affected axle before fitting the
brake discs.
• Brake discs and brake pads are subject to normal wear. Normal wear is excluded from warranty.

Customer information
Brake system wear argumentation aid:
Both the intensity and the type of wear depends on the operating conditions. The driving style is also a factor on
the wear. An aggressive driving style with frequent sharp braking leads to stronger abrasion, particularly of the
brake pads. The wear of the brake discs also depends largely on the frequency and intensity of the brake
operations. Corrosion (see legend for brake disc photos, illustration 6) because of dirt, wind-borne sand,
stationary period, road salt and similar can lead to wear, e.g. scoring marks on the brake discs (see attached
illustration: This can affect brake pads, brake discs and brake callipers. A gentle driving style can lead to the
seizing of the brakes. This happens when braking little or gently. Here a rust film and particles can settle on the
brakes. Occasional strong brake operations free the brakes of such dirt. If this does not happen, wear or
corrosion are unavoidable.
