II. Service Pack 2: Why you should install it

By Eddie L Hines

Well, if you are reading this, then service pack 2 has been released and
automatically downloaded to your computer waiting for you to do so. But I bet you’re
thinking “what if it messes up my computer?” I understand that will justify you
hesitating to install SP2 and want to know what is so big about this update that I
have to risk some of my programs not working right afterwards.

So I am going to tell you all the features and benefits of service pack 2, then you can
decide for yourself if you are willing to install it, then I will show you how to check if
its ready to install on your system.

INTERNET EXPLORER

1. Built in pop up blocker

With this feature, you no longer have to download a 3rd party pop up blocker.
With its adjustable settings you can now control what pop ups are allowed
and which you can dismiss.

2. Manage IE Add-ons
With this feature, you can manually remove any rogue toolbar or browser
hijacker software from your internet explorer. These rampant files are the
ones they hijack your start page and take you places you don’t want to go.

3. Disabling of automatic download installations

In the past, a lot of people got stricken with viruses because IE automatically
downloaded and installed software for you, or annoying messages kept
appearing when you wanted to download software and the best way you
could dismiss the messages was to answer “yes” to the permission question.
That allowed the spyware and viruses in your system. Now you will see a
visual-friendly information bar at the top of the browser, informing you of
pop-ups blocked and downloaded software permission messages. Here, you
wont be disturbed into agreeing to install something you really don’t want,
and it protects your system from auto-installations of dangerous software.

4. Better file waste management

This browser gives you more control over deleting cookies, temporary internet
files, and which sites can be trusted to surf or not

WINDOWS FIREWALL (click to view Fig 1)

This is probably the biggest change you will notice in the software. Previous versions of
windows installed with the built in firewall turned off, allowing for port worms to attack
your system and render it useless. Now the firewall not only ships turned on by default, it
now monitors computer programs to ask for permission to send data over the internet and
masks your IP address from being detected outside your network.

You will now have the chance to “unblock” any internet program that asks to send data
over the internet. Once you agree to the connection the first time, it will remember your
decision and it won’t bother you again. You can also manually configure which ports and
programs you want to have internet access, thus giving your more control on your
internet security functions.

AUTOMATIC UPDATES

In previous versions of windows, any critical update was ignored due to the default
settings in windows not allowing the pc to download these updates for you. This resulted
in many people getting viruses like Blaster, Sasser, and other port worms attacking the
security holes in an unprotected operating system. SP1 improved this somewhat by
allowing you to download updates automatically at certain time of the day, but many
people did not know when and how to install an update, not which files that were
downloaded were safe to use. Enter AU 2.0, which now turns on by default,
automatically downloaded critical updates at 3AM. It also clearly gives you instructions
on how to install the updates using a very visible icon in the system tray of a yellow
shield. Stepping you through the process, you can have your system kept up-to-date, with
the peace of mind that the software will work on your system (or you can roll it back!”

WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER (click to view Fig 2)

This new control panel icon will monitor your antivirus updates, firewall, and auto
updates settings all from one place. If any of those 3 are out of date or turned off you will
get a big red shield in the system tray alerting you of this potential danger, and allowing
you to fix the problem. This will make sure that your anti-virus definitions are up to date,
your firewall in on and working, and you are able to download any critical updates from
Microsoft.

Yes this is a lot to absorb, however I feel that your system will function more reliably and
more secure with this update. If you are hesitant in updating your computer and would
like an expert to install it for you and teach you how you can benefit from it. We are
having a special service called “Service Pack Installation” which will cost only $100.
With this service, a KCC technician will not only install the service pack for you, but also
train you 1-on-1 of the new features and how they can benefit you. We hope you help us
in keeping your pc safe by installing Service pack 2 today!
IV. TIPS AND TRICKS

How to Get Rid of the XP Boot Logo

Don't want to see the XP logo during boot up? It's easy to get rid of. Just do the
following:

1. Click Start, Run.

2. In the Run box, type msconfig.
3. Click the BOOT.INI tab.
4. Check the box labeled /NOGUIBOOT
5. Click OK.

Now the XP boot logo won't be displayed.

How to Reduce the Password Registration Interval

There is an interval between the time that a password-protected screen saver starts
and the time that the password protection actually kicks in. During this short period
of time, a person can bypass the password by just hitting a key or moving the
mouse, and get back to the desktop without having to enter a password. This can be
a definite security risk! However, you can edit the registry to reduce or eliminate this
delay. Here's how:

1. Click Start, Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Name the new entry ScreenSaverGracePeriod.
5. Double-click the ScreenSaverGracePeriod subkey.
6. Click Decimal under the Base heading, and then enter a number in the Value
data box that represents the password activation delay in seconds. You can
enter any whole number between 0 and 2,147,483 (approximately 24 days).
A value of zero indicates no password protection delay. There is no default
entry.
7. Click OK and exit Registry Editor.

How to Install XP Pro on your XP Home Computer in a Dual

Boot Configuration

If you want to be able to boot into both XP Home Edition and XP Professional, you
can install both operating systems on the same computer in a dual boot
configuration. You have to install Pro into a different folder (preferably on a different
partition) than Home. However, some folks have complained that when they tried to
install Pro, they weren't prompted for a location, and the Setup program went ahead
and installed Pro over Home. The problem is that they selected the Express Setup
option.

To install Pro to a separate folder, you have to use Advanced Setup. Here's how:

1. Boot into XP Home.

2. Put the XP installation CD for XP Pro into the CD or DVD drive.
3. When the Setup wizard runs, on the Welcome to Windows XP page, select
Install Windows XP.
4. On the Welcome to Setup page, select New Installation (Advanced). Click
Next.
5. On the next page, click I accept this agreement and click Next.
6. In the Product key box, enter your CD key. Click Next.
7. On the Setup Options page, click Advanced Options.
8. In the To this folder on my hard drive field, enter the path of the folder
where you want to install XP Pro. Click OK.
9. Click Next and continue with the installation process.

Working in the Harvest

Read: Matthew 9:35-10:4

Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. —Matthew 9:38

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 18-19; 2 Timothy 3

While D. L. Moody was attending a convention in Indianapolis on mass evangelism, he

did more than just talk about it. He asked a friend, who was a gifted musician, to meet
him on a street corner at 6 o'clock one evening. The man stood on a box and sang a song.
When a crowd gathered, Moody spoke briefly and then invited the people to follow him
to the nearby convention hall.

Soon the auditorium was filled with spiritually hungry people, and he preached to them.
When the convention attendees began to arrive, Moody stopped preaching and said,
"Now we must close, as the brethren of the convention want to discuss the topic, 'How to
reach the masses.'"

When Jesus saw the masses, He was "moved with compassion" for them (Matthew 9:36).
He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful . . . . Pray the Lord of the harvest
to send out laborers" (vv.37-38). And He sent them out to preach the good news of His
kingdom (10:1).

It is estimated that only 10 percent of the world's population of 6.3 billion are believers in
Jesus Christ. And more than 25 percent have never heard of Jesus' love even once.

As His disciples today, let's not just talk about the need—let's pray and go. —Anne Cetas

Far, far away, in heathen darkness dwelling,

Millions of souls forever may be lost;
Who, who will go, salvation's story telling,
Looking to Jesus, minding not the cost? —McGranahan

The next person you meet may be your mission field.

VI. POCKET PC IN THE NEWS

PocketPC: Pocket PC Robot

Posted by: fyiguy on Thursday, October 14, 2004 - 07:29 PM (221 Reads)
Looking of something cool to do with your old Pocket PC? Joseph Wu, a software development engineer in
the WDM team at Microsoft has been building a robot based on a Pocket PC. Here's an outline of the
project from Joseph on Mike Hall's Weblog.

"I watched a lot of Japanese cartoons when I was a kid so I always wanted to make an android. I saw the Sony
SDR-4 around 3 years ago and I knew that it is the time to go for my dream. I know Sony SDR-4 is right in
functionality but wrong for pricing. I know that end user need a powerful but acceptable price android. I started with
searching the android world. I found that wheel based robots are cheap but not fancy enough. So I decided to go
for RC servo based android because it is about $3000 like the price of a new PC..."

Review : Lakeridge Software Wisbar Advanced 2.0

It was about three weeks ago when I heard that Wisbar Advanced had been updated to
version 2.0. As I mentioned in my post, I used Wisbar from the first build all the way to the
Wisbar Advanced 1.0 version. Unfortunately, I experienced some slowdowns with the 1.0
version when I installed it on my WM 2003 device, thus I had to remove it. Chris Lakeridge,
the developer, had written that he built Wisbar Advanced 2.0 from the ground up and that it
was better, stronger and more stable. Is Wisbar Advanced 2.0 the taskbar manager that
dreams are made of? Or is it just a skinnable toy that's "gee whiz" factor wears off in a day or
two? Read on to find out!

To begin, just a little description of the Wisbar concept and why version 2.0 intrigued me.
First, the original Wisbar was written to add the "close" function that is missing from the
Pocket PC OS (when you click the X apps are just minimized, not closed). It also added some
nifty task management features where you can click a down arrow that displays all of the apps
running in the background, it also has a quick click button that takes you to the today screen.
It enabled taskbar skinning which added some eye-candy to your buttons.

How to Add a Fresh Look and Feel to Your Pocket PC

As you can see from the picture above, combined with the right theme, a wisbar theme can
really look nice. This theme is Clarity by Juni. It is a combination Wisbar Advanced 2.0 theme
and Today theme. But it's not only good looking, it has some good functionality too. From the
right, you can see the X button has been replaced with a custom button. The house button is
my instant access to my today screen. The date and time is displayed where I can see it from
all my apps and if I click it, it shows my running tasks and access to Wisbar advanced
settings. The volume button looks better and the connection icon changes when the device is
connected to activesync or to WiFi. Finally, the button to the left of the connection button is
my custom app button. Yes, you can set up 2 custom buttons for access to your choice of apps
or settings (Mine is set for Resco Explorer).
