Dear Harlandale ISD Family,

As many of you are aware we decided to close our district on Election Day, November 3, for safety
reasons and precautionary measures. We had previously announced that this new holiday would replace
the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday, January 18,2021 and based on recent survey results, this
decision will stand.

After receiving feedback regarding the holiday change, we decided to leave the choice of selecting a
holiday to replace the November 3 holiday to all of our staff members. We released a survey with the
different choices of days that could replace this new holiday. The survey was available for everyone to
voice their opinion on this matter and the results are shown below.

All students and staff will be required to report to their respective campus/department on Monday,
January 18th, as it is no longer a holiday. As previously stated, all of the events for MLK will be virtual and
we encourage all of our teachers and administrators to participate in these virtual events with their
students to commemorate this important date in our history.

As always please know that we are here to support all of our students and staff. The decisions we make
on a daily basis are focused on student and employee safety as our number one priority.

Sincerely,

Gerardo Soto
Superintendent of Schools
Harlandale ISD
